Avowed Battle Mage Build Overview
One of my favorite builds to play in Avowed is the battle mage, combining brutal melee combat using a sword and shield with powerful elemental magic to create the ultimate spellcasting warrior! This build specializes in survivability using both handheld shields and magical shields to greatly reduce incoming damage and even reflect back projectiles at enemies, all while freezing surrounding enemies only to shatter them seconds later with a flaming sword.
The Battle Mage in Avowed thrives on a fluid and dynamic combat style, blending powerful melee attacks with offensive and defensive magic. Unlike a traditional warrior who simply blocks and swings their weapon or a mage who stays at range casting spells, the Battle Mage wades into the thick of things, using elemental shields and heavy armor to absorb hits while dealing devastating magical and physical damage in return.
Against ranged enemies such as archers and casters, the Battle Mage can instantly engage priority targets such as enemy healers and spellcasters by using the warrior’s Charge ability. Because many of the game’s toughest foes rely on magic, shutting them down early ensures smoother battles.

Who Should Play the Battle Mage Build?
If you enjoy maintaining constant pressure on enemies while remaining nearly unkillable yourself, then the Battle Mage build is for you. With layered defenses, high sustain, and explosive damage, this build allows players to be both a frontline warrior and a spellcasting powerhouse, making every encounter feel dynamic.
Against melee-focused opponents, the Battle Mage plays a more reactive role, allowing enemies to come to them. With Elemental Auras active, enemies will naturally take damage just by being in proximity. If you like Freezing enemies solid, then smashing them to bits, or accelerating their defeat with burning effects, then you will love this Battle Mage build!
Your role as a Battlemage is that of tank and spellcaster combined – charging enemies, slamming them with your shield, slashing with your sword, and applying a variety of elemental effects with magic for improved defense and status effect damage.

Battle Mage Pros and Cons
The Battle Mage for Avowed is a great starter build for anyone looking for a slower paced, more methodical approach to melee combat that also incorporates Magic.
Pros
- Great defense with a shield
- Frost and Fire auras increase defense
- Arcane Veil reflects projectiles and knocks enemies down
Cons
- Low damage
- Lower speed and mobility
- Blocking repeatedly can drain stamina
Best Race Options
With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.
The best playable race for the Battle Mage Build in Avowed is Dwarf, as they have the best mix of pure damage with +1 Might along with increased health to absorb damage thanks to +1 Constitution.
Another solid option would be the Human Race for their combination of +1 Might and +1 Resolve, which will balance increased damage along with a larger pool of stamina for swinging your weapons thanks to the Resolve bonus.
Best Background Choice
Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.
In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Noble Scion is the best background for the Battle Mage Build in Avowed.
Noble Scion starts with a common sword in the tutorial, which offers the most straightforward combat experience, plus the default attribute distribution spreads points somewhat evenly, with slight emphasis on Might and Dexterity, Peception and Intellect, while maintaining modest Constitution and Resolve. This “jack of all trades” approach creates no glaring weaknesses but also no exceptional strengths – perfect for players who want to experiment.
This background opens extra dialogue options involving status, lineage, court politics, and noble privilege. Officials, other aristocrats, and certain mercantile NPCs react differently to someone of noble birth, even one from a fallen house.
Best Battle Mage Attributes
While exact attribute allocations may vary based on playstyle, a balanced approach should look something like this:
- Might: Primary Focus (Boost all damage types, improve stagger and stun effects)
- Constitution: Secondary Focus (Increase durability, enhance healing passives)
- Resolve: Essential for stamina management (Sustain melee combat and blocking efficiency)
- Intellect: Situational (Higher Essence pool for more frequent magic use)
By prioritizing Might, Constitution, and Resolve, with a moderate investment in Intellect, the Battle Mage remains a lethal, unbreakable warrior capable of cutting through enemies while shrugging off damage and casting devastating magic.

Battle Mage Build Best Weapons
The best weapons for the Battle Mage build in Avowed are the Last Light of Day and Bastion of Solace Shield combined with Vesrik’s Grimoire and the Star of Unbeing.

Last Light Of Day
- Base Effects
- Golden Sun’s Ascent: Killing an enemy restores 3% of your Maximum Health.
- Dawn’s Remembrance: Hits deal +10% bonus Fire Damage
- Best Enchantment
- Golden Sun’s Zenith: Killing an enemy restores 10% of your Maximum Health.
For the primary melee weapon, the Last Light of Day stands out as the best early choice which can also carry you to end-game. This one-handed flaming sword not only deals bonus fire damage with each strike, but it also has a unique effect that can be upgraded to restore 10% of health per enemy kill, making it invaluable for sustaining long fights. Just make sure to select the Golden Sun’s Zenith enchantment to unlock this effect.
This weapon is found through a side quest in the first zone, meaning players won’t have to wait long to wield its immense power. Because many early enemies in Avowed are also weak to fire, the Last Light of Day provides a clear damage advantage at the start of the game, while remaining viable all the way to end game with consistent upgrades due to its health restoration perk.

Bastion Of Solace
- Base Effects:
- Nandru’s Retribution – Blocking has a 25% chance to inflict Fire Damage on the attacking enemy.
- Pargrun Resiliency – +75 Maximum Health, +50 Maximum Stamina
The Bastion Of Solace shield is the best shield in Avowed, due to its useful stat bonuses of Maximum Health and Maximum Stamina. The fire damage effect is also a nice tough for our Battle Mage build who already deals excellent fire damage.
Bastion of Solace is a reward from the main quest Our Dreams Divide Us Still in the Galawain’s Tusks region. When given the choice to Doom or Save Solace Keep, you must choose to Save Solace Keep.

Star of Unbeing
- Base Effects:
- Unmaking – Power Attacks deal high Poison Accumulation
- Untamed Void – A successful Special Attack casts Pull Of Eora
- Best Enchantment:
- Annihilation – Power Attacks deal high Poison Accumulation to nearby enemies
Another powerful One-Handed weapon for Avowed is the Star of Unbeing. This weapon can deal massive damage, especially versus a fully stunned enemy (special attack), plus its bonus effect is to cast Pull Of Eora, which gathers nearby enemies and holds them in the air, which is a lot of fun and very helpful in combat. The Star of Unbeing unique mace can be obtained during Shadows of the Past in Naku Kubel in the Shatterscarp region.

Vesrik’s Grimoire
- Spells
- Parasitic Staff
- Arcane Veil
- Bristling Frost
- Ring of Fire
Vestrik’s Grimoire is one of the best defensive Grimoire’s players can obtained in Avowed, giving easy access to all 3 defensive spells I recommend for this build. You can use this as a backup weapon to cast those defensive shields more cheaply, then switch to your one handed weapon and shield to engage in melee combat.
Remember that Grimoire’s can also be upgraded which gives further bonuses to Ability cost reduction and cooldowns.

Other Weapons
For an alternative melee option, the Drawn in Winter axe is another excellent choice. Unlike the Last Light of Day, this one-handed weapon focuses on frost damage, which is particularly useful against enemies resistant to fire. This weapon is unique not only because of its ice-based damage but also due to its utility in exploration – it allows the Battle Mage to freeze water and create pathways to hidden areas. This makes it a great secondary weapon to keep on hand, particularly when encountering enemies weak to cold or when needing to navigate water-heavy environments. It can be found in the Watcher’s Mirror location in the first zone of Dawn Shore.

The Greater Elemental Grimoire is the best early option for this build, as it allows access to more advanced elemental spells while also granting additional damage reduction through its Frost Shield. This grimoire improves upon the Basic Elemental Grimoire, which is obtained early in the game and already provides fire, shock, and ice spells. Players who wish to specialize further can choose an element-specific grimoire, such as the Fire Grimoire for additional burn damage or the Ice Grimoire for enhanced freezing effects.
Unflinching Duty is the best early game shield option for the Battle Mage. This shield is obtained in the first zone after defeating the Elder Brown Bear, a part of the main story quest. What makes this shield exceptional is its bonus stamina effect, which significantly improves the Battle Mage’s blocking efficiency. Since stamina is the key resource for blocking and attacking, having a shield that increases stamina ensures that the Battle Mage can maintain a defensive stance for longer periods without becoming exhausted.

Battle Mage Best Armor
The best armor for the Battle Mage build in Avowed is the Lava-Forged Plate, Eothasian Gauntlets or Vailian Gauntlets (depending on weapon type) and Sentinel Boots.
Lava-Forged Plate
- Bonus Effect:
- Volcanic Outburst: Taking melee damage deals Fire Damage to nearby enemies.
- Enchantment:
- Greater Burn-Proofed: +45% resistance to Fire Accumulation
The Lava-Forged Plate fits the Battle Mage theme because it deals Fire Damage to nearby enemies when you take damage. It is also a Heavy Armor piece, making it come with greater Damage Reduction, though at the expense of some Maximum Stamina and Maximum Essence.
You can find the Lava-Forged Plate armor inside the Mt. Forja Quarry location in the Galawain’s Tusk region.

Vailian Gauntlets
- Bonus Effect:
- +10% Parry Efficiency
- Enchantment:
- Duelist’s Edge: +15% Attack Damage with swords and daggers
For gloves, several strong options exist depending on your preferred weapon. The Vailian Gauntlets are the best choice for maximizing melee damage early in the game, as they increase sword-based damage significantly, buffing your build if using the Last Light of Day.

Eothasian Gauntlets
- Bonus Effect:
- +10% Parry Efficiency
- Enchantment:
- The Martyr’s Fist: +15% Attack Damage with maces and two-handed hammers
The Eothasian Gauntlets are the best choice for the Battle Mage build if you intend to use a one-handed mace as your primary weapon. This works best if using weapons like the Star of Unbeing.

Sentinel Boots
- Bonus Effect:
- +15 Maximum Stamina
- Enchantment:
- Greater Survivor: +60 Maximum Health

The Sentinel Boots work best for a Battle Mage build thanks to boosting our primary stats of Stamina and Health. Stamina will let you swing your weapon and block without pausing while the Greater Survivor effect gives us a whopping 60 Max Health.
Other Options
For the chest piece, the best early-game option is the Steel Garrot Plate, which can be obtained in the first zone. This heavy armor piece not only offers strong physical protection but also boosts Constitution, further increasing the Battle Mage’s health pool. Additionally, this armor features a unique trait that deals retaliatory damage whenever the wearer is struck, making it especially effective when surrounded by enemies.

The Death Knight’s Armor is another great choice for this build. This armor provides superior damage reduction and, more importantly, has a built-in sustain mechanic – it has a chance to restore health whenever the wearer takes damage. Given that the Battle Mage is frequently in combat and absorbing hits, this passive self-healing effect ensures that health remains high even in the toughest fights. Paired with the Last Light of Day sword, which also restores health on kills, this armor set makes the Battle Mage nearly unkillable!

Battle Mage Best Accessories
The best accessories for the Battle Mage build are the Mortal Haven Amulet, Ring of Elemental Balance, and Disciple’s Ring.
Mortal Haven
- Lesser Veiling: While below 25% Maximum Health, cast Arcane Veil every 20 seconds.
The Moral Haven Amulet works well for this build as it further buffs its defensive potential, automatically casting the powerful Arcane Veil shield spell when your character dips below 25% Health.

Ring of Elemental Balance
- Elemental Balance: +10% Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation
The Ring of Elemental Balance is a great option for this build as it increases our Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation by 10 percent. This makes our Elemental Spells even more deadly, perfectly fitting the Battle Mage theme.

Disciple’s Ring
- Greater Innate Talent: +60 Maximum Essence
The Disciple’s Ring is one of the best options for any spellcaster in Avowed, with a whopping +60 Maximum Essence bonus, allowing you to cast more spells before needing to recover.

Combat Tips for the Battle Mage
Mastering the Battle Mage in Avowed requires balancing melee combat, elemental magic, and strategic defenses. Here are some key combat strategies to maximize effectiveness in any encounter.
1. Always Activate Elemental Shields Before Combat
Before engaging, always activate an Elemental Aura Shield: either Ring of Fire or Bristling Frost. These shields provide damage reduction while punishing enemies that get too close. Fire burns enemies over time, while Frost freezes them in place, setting them up for shatter combos with the Charge ability. For even more protection, stack Arcane Veil on top for more damage reduction, while also reflecting projectiles and staggering melee attackers at higher ranks.
2. Close the Distance Quickly with Charge
At the start of combat, you can use Charge to gap-close and stun key targets like enemy healers and spellcasters, who pose the biggest threat. Follow up with Shield Bash or Kick to interrupt their actions, ensuring they don’t buff allies or heal damage.
3. Use Stagger and Stuns to Control the Fight
Against tougher enemies and bosses, build up the stun meter quickly by combining Barbaric Shout, Shield Bash, and power attacks. Once stunned, unleash a critical combo, which deals massive burst damage.
4. Manage Stamina and Essence Efficiently
The Battle Mage relies heavily on stamina for blocking and melee attacks, so don’t exhaust it too quickly. Armored Grace helps reduce stamina drain, but smart pacing is key.
By following these combat tips, the Battle Mage remains nearly unkillable, constantly dealing elemental damage, staggering foes, and maintaining a strong defensive front. Whether facing hordes of enemies or powerful bosses, this build ensures you control every battle with a perfect mix of might and magic.

Best Companions
- Kai – Kai’s Fire and Ire ability to taunt enemies, and his second wind make him a reliable tank, which deals decent damage and stuns thanks to the low cooldown of Fire and Ire. His ability to pull aggro from enemies and take melee or ranged pressure off you for a few seconds is incredibly helpful when facing off against multiple enemies at once and particularly versus bosses.
- Giatta – As the primary healing companion in Avowed, Giatta is a very good companion to bring along with any melee build. Her abilities will help with emergency heals, plus increase attack speed and add temporary health for better survival.
The Final Word
The Battle Mage build in Avowed is one of the most powerful hybrid playstyles, offering a perfect balance between melee and spellcasting. Whether you prefer high survivability with shields, freezing enemies in place, or burning them to ash with fire magic, this build provides an incredibly fun and flexible way to play.
