The Huntress is Path of Exile 2’s newest class, blending ranged and melee combat using a brand-new weapon: the spear. With her fluid combat style and explosive synergy, the Huntress feels fresh, powerful, and incredibly fun to play. This guide breaks down everything you need to get started with the Huntress class—best skills, weapons and armor, passive tree choices, and how to play her effectively.
Best Huntress Skills
The Beginner Huntress build relies on a combination of melee strikes and ranged attacks. Jumping in and out of combat is the Huntress’ specialty, so these skills are designed to embrace that playstyle to the fullest!
1. Basic Attacks: Spear Strike and Spear Throw
The Huntress begins the campaign with two basic spear attacks—Spear Stab for melee and Spear Throw for ranged damage. While both are viable, Spear Throw quickly becomes a favorite early on thanks to its ability to keep enemies at bay. It’s especially effective at thinning out mobs before they get close enough to retaliate.
Recommended Support Gems:
- None, as you will quickly replace these skills.
2. Whirling Slash
Whirling Slash is your bread-and-butter crowd destroyer at the start of the game. This skill creates a swirling storm around you that slows, blinds, and damages enemies. The storm grows larger with each spin, maxing out at three stacks. Once you dodge out of it, the storm explodes, dealing damage based on its size. Whirling Slash becomes even more effective with the right support gems!
Recommended Support Gems:
- Lacerate: allows the skill to inflict bleed, which synergizes beautifully with the Herald of Blood skill you’ll pick up in Act One.
3. Explosive Spear
This ranged skill plants a spear that detonates after a delay, dealing hefty damage in a wide radius. While it feels lackluster without support gems, once you do apply the right ones this skill becomes another staple damage dealer for the build, and is especially great for bosses, letting you deal damage from range while you avoid deadly mechanics.
Recommended Support Gems:
- Expedite: Reduces the explosion delay by 40%.
- Overabundance: Lets you throw two spears instead of just 1. As a detonator skill, both spears will explode together if they land close enough to each other.
4. Spearfield
Spearfield is another standout skill, not for damage but for its incredible crowd control. With the right support gems, Spearfield is a strategic tool, especially useful in tight hallways or when you’re under-leveled. It lets you freeze the battlefield and pick enemies off from a distance using Explosive Spear without taking damage.
Recommended Support Gems:
- Pin: Immobilizes enemies in place.
- Lockdown: Increases Pin build up for enemies that are close to you.
5. Rake
If you’re leaning into bleed damage, Rake becomes a powerful addition to your arsenal. This melee skill allows you to leap into enemies from range, apply bleeding, then quickly dodge out to safety. It’s excellent against bosses and synergizes well with the ranged-melee playstyle that the Huntress excels at. Using Rake after tossing an explosive spear, then dodging back out, gives you a fluid rotation that feels both aggressive and tactical.
Recommended Support Gems:
- Brutality: More damage is a good thing!
6. Herald Of Blood
Herald of Blood ties everything together. Once you’ve inflicted bleed with Whirling Slash or Rake, the Herald causes enemies to explode upon death, compounding your AoE output. This is acquired early on by defeating the King of the Mist and functions similarly to other Herald skills, but with a focus on bleeding targets.
Recommended Support Gems:
- Magnified Effect: increases the range of your blood explosions.
Best Huntress Weapons And Armor
Spear
The Huntress’s primary weapon is the one-handed spear. You’ll want to prioritize any spear that adds physical damage or boosts it by percentage. This directly increases the damage of all your core skills. A solid early-game spear should ideally have added Strength and Dexterity as well, providing more room for support gems and stat scaling. If you can’t find one quickly, consider gambling with your gold until you get a decent roll.

Important Stats for the Spear
- Increased Physical Damage
- Increased Dexterity or Strength
- Increased Attack Speed
- Life or Mana per enemy killed
Buckler
The off-hand item introduced with the Huntress is the Buckler. While it does allow for parrying, this mechanic is niche and not effective against every enemy type, especially bosses. Instead, focus on finding a buckler that offers useful stat boosts like increased evasion, dexterity, resistances, or maximum life. It’s more of a passive bonus than a core component of your combat strategy.

Important Stats for the Buckler
- Increased Evasion
- Increased Maximum Life
- Increased Dexterity or Strength
- Increased elemental Resistances
Boots
Look for boots with at least 10 to 15 percent movement speed to help you stay agile.

- Looking for starting boots with stats like:
- 10-15% increased movement
- Increased Life or Mana
- Increased Attributes
- Increased Armor and Evasion
Gloves
Gloves in Path Of Exile 2 are a good source of extra damage as well as sustain from killing enemies.

Armor
Some additional important stats you need to look out for include:
- Increased Spirit
- High value Armor and Evasion
- Dexterity
- Maximum Life
- Maximum Mana
Uniques
My favorite unique I found for this build while leveling up was the Hermit’s Garb, which treated as Bleeding as Aggravating, increasing its damage.

Passive Skills
Your passive tree journey with the Huntress begins much like the Ranger’s, focusing on increasing attack damage and speed. As you climb the tree, look for nodes that enhance melee and projectile damage, as both will be key to your playstyle.
Recommended Starting Huntress Passives
- 10% Increased Attack Damage
- 10% Increased Attack Damage
- 8% Increased Attack Damage
- 8% Increased Attack Damage
- Primal Instinct: 8% Increased Attack Damage, Area Of Effect, +10 Dexterity

How To Play The Huntress Class
Combat with the Huntress revolves around alternating between ranged and melee attacks to take full advantage of her passive bonuses and hybrid skills. Against groups of enemies, you’ll typically start by throwing two Explosive Spears at their feet. As the timer ticks down, dash in using either Whirling Slash or Rake to deal melee damage, stack bleeds, and blind targets. Once your storm is fully charged, dodge roll out to trigger the explosion. If any enemies remain, Herald of Blood will usually finish the job with delayed burst damage.
In more chaotic or dangerous areas, cast Spearfield in choke points to freeze enemies in place, giving you room to work through your rotation without taking hits. This is especially useful when under-leveled or in tight corridors where kiting becomes difficult.
Boss fights follow a similar flow. Start with Explosive Spears to set up damage, then jump in with Rake or Slash for bleeds and quick bursts. Keep moving—strike, dodge back, throw spears again, and repeat. This active playstyle keeps you safe while maintaining a constant stream of damage.
The Huntress is designed to reward versatility and timing. Switching between ranged and melee abilities isn’t just encouraged—it’s essential. Once you get the rhythm down, you’ll feel the power of chaining explosions from spears, slashes, and blood bursts all in quick succession. It’s a high-tempo, satisfying loop that’s both effective and fun to play.
