Avowed Spellblade Build Overview
One of my favorite builds to play in Avowed is the Spellblade, which combines Brutal melee damage via the two-handed greatsword with powerful defensive spells and a variety of summoned weapons, too! This build specializes in multiple damage options for any situation while also constantly healing to easily handle most encounters.
While in Melee Range, the Spellblade can freeze enemies, effectively taking them out of combat and quickly finishing them with Explosive damage sources, smashing them to pieces.
Against ranged enemies such as archers and casters, the Spellblade can instantly engage priority targets by swapping to the Blackbow – a unique summoned bow.

Who Should Play the Spellblade Build?
If you enjoy maintaining constant pressure on enemies while remaining nearly unkillable yourself, then the Spellblade build is for you. With layered defenses, high sustain, and explosive damage, this build allows players to be both a frontline warrior and a spellcasting powerhouse, making every encounter feel dynamic.
If you like Freezing enemies and blowing them to bits this build is for you. Or if you prefer brutal Melee heavy attacks with a giant two hand greatsword, this build has that too!
With the Spellblade build, flexibility in combat plus high DPS are your greatest strengths.

Spellblade Pros and Cons
Pros
- High DPS and Stun with two handed weapons
- Great crowd control with Frost Accumulation
- Great self-healing, defense, and sustain
Cons
- Some back and forth required with swapping weapon sets
- Lower speed and mobility
- Summoned weapons cost a lot of Essence
Best Race Options
With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.
The best playable race for the Spellblade Build in Avowed is Aumaua, as they have the best early damage spike in the game thanks to +2 Might at the start of the game. Their large size and height also makes it easy to spot enemies at a distance.
Another solid option would be the Elf Race for their combination of +1 Perception and +1 Dexterity, allowing for an early boost to critical chance, weapon range, attack speed and cast speed.
Best Spellblade Background
Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.
In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Noble Scion is the best background for the Spellblade Build in Avowed.
Noble Scion starts with a common sword in the tutorial, which offers the most straightforward combat experience, plus the default attribute distribution spreads points somewhat evenly, with slight emphasis on Might and Dexterity, Peception and Intellect, while maintaining modest Constitution and Resolve. This “jack of all trades” approach creates no glaring weaknesses but also no exceptional strengths – perfect for players who want to experiment.
This background opens extra dialogue options involving status, lineage, court politics, and noble privilege. Officials, other aristocrats, and certain mercantile NPCs react differently to someone of noble birth, even one from a fallen house.
Best Spellblade Attributes
While exact attribute allocations may vary based on playstyle, a balanced approach for the Spellblade should look something like this:
- Might: Primary Focus (Boost all damage types, improve stagger and stun effects)
- Dexterity: Secondary Focus (Increase durability, enhance healing passives)
- Intellect: Essential for increased Essence pool to use spells and abilities more often
- Resolve: Helpful for stamina management (Sustain melee combat and parry)
By prioritizing Might, Dexterity, and Intellect, with some Resolve thrown in for good measure, the Spellblade can be a balanced and lethal force on the battlefield.

Spellblade Build Best Weapons
The best weapons for the Spellblade build in Avowed are the Last Light of Day and Grimoire of the Spellblade combined with the unique Hel’s Tongue Greatsword.

Last Light Of Day
- Base Effects
- Golden Sun’s Ascent: Killing an enemy restores 3% of your Maximum Health.
- Dawn’s Remembrance: Hits deal +10% bonus Fire Damage
- Best Enchantment
- Golden Sun’s Zenith: Killing an enemy restores 10% of your Maximum Health.
For the primary melee weapon, the Last Light of Day stands out as the best early choice which can also carry you to end-game. This one-handed flaming sword not only deals bonus fire damage with each strike, but it also has a unique effect that can be upgraded to restore 10% of health per enemy kill, making it invaluable for sustaining long fights. Just make sure to select the Golden Sun’s Zenith enchantment to unlock this effect.
This weapon is found through a side quest in the first zone, meaning players won’t have to wait long to wield its immense power. Because many early enemies in Avowed are also weak to fire, the Last Light of Day provides a clear damage advantage at the start of the game, while remaining viable all the way to end game with consistent upgrades due to its health restoration perk.

Grimoire of the Spellblade
- Spells:
- Arcane Veil
- Grimoire Snap
- Spirit Lance
- Blackbow
The Grimoire of the Spellblade is perfectly made for the Avowed Spellblade build. This grimoire includes a balanced list of spells including Arcane Veil and Grimoire Snap for defense along with Spirit Lance for melee damage and Blackbow for ranged damage. No matter what the scenario, the Grimoire of the Spellblade has a spell to help you in combat.

Hel’s Tongue
- Base Effects:
- Soul Reaver – Power Attack kills restore 10% of your Maximum Essence
- Emotional – Hits deal +10% bonus Fire Damage against enemies above 50% Maximum Health; Hits deal +10% bonus Frost Damage against enemies below 50% Maximum Health
- Best Enchantment:
- Soul Obliteration – Power Attack kills restore 15% of your Maximum Essence

Other Weapons
Another powerful One-Handed weapon for Avowed is the Star of Unbeing. This weapon can deal massive damage, especially versus a fully stunned enemy (special attack), plus its bonus effect is to cast Pull Of Eora, which gathers nearby enemies and holds them in the air, which is a lot of fun and very helpful in combat. The Star of Unbeing unique mace can be obtained during Shadows of the Past in Naku Kubel in the Shatterscarp region.

Vestrik’s Grimoire is one of the best defensive Grimoire’s players can obtained in Avowed, giving easy access to all 3 defensive spells I recommend for this build. You can use this as a backup weapon to cast those defensive shields more cheaply, then switch to your one handed weapon and shield to engage in melee combat.
Remember that Grimoires can also be upgraded which gives further bonuses to Ability cost reduction and cooldowns.

Spellblade Best Armor
The best armor for the Spellblade build in Avowed is the Lava-Forged Plate, Skald’s Gauntlets, and Sentinel Boots.
Lava-Forged Plate
- Bonus Effect:
- Volcanic Outburst: Taking melee damage deals Fire Damage to nearby enemies.
- Enchantment:
- Greater Burn-Proofed: +45% resistance to Fire Accumulation
The Lava-Forged Plate fits the Spellblade theme because it deals Fire Damage to nearby enemies when you take damage. It is also a Heavy Armor piece, making it come with greater Damage Reduction, though at the expense of some Maximum Stamina and Maximum Essence.
You can find the Lava-Forged Plate armor inside the Mt. Forja Quarry location in the Galawain’s Tusk region.

Skald’s Gauntlets
- Bonus Effect:
- +5% Power Attack Bonus
- Enchantment:
- And Their Champion Fell, Sundered: +15% Attack Damage with great swords, great hammers, and great axes
For the Spellblade build, Skald’s Gauntlets are the best gloves due to their combination of bonus Power Attack damage and bonus to greatsword damage.

Sentinel Boots
- Bonus Effect:
- +15 Maximum Stamina
- Enchantment:
- Greater Survivor: +60 Maximum Health
The Sentinel Boots work best for the Spellblade build thanks to boosting our primary stats of Stamina and Health. Stamina will let you swing your weapon and parry more often without pausing while the Greater Survivor effect gives us a whopping 60 Max Health.

Other Options
For the chest piece, the best early-game option is the Steel Garrot Plate, which can be obtained in the first zone. This heavy armor piece not only offers strong physical protection but also boosts Constitution, further increasing our health pool. Additionally, this armor features a unique trait that deals retaliatory damage whenever the wearer is struck, making it especially effective when surrounded by enemies.

The Death Knight’s Armor is another great choice for this build. This armor provides superior damage reduction and, more importantly, has a built-in sustain mechanic – it has a chance to restore health whenever the wearer takes damage. Given that the Spellblade build is frequently in combat and absorbing hits, this passive self-healing effect ensures that health remains high even in the toughest fights. Paired with the Last Light of Day sword, which also restores health on kills and the spell Corrosive Siphon, the Spellblade is nearly unkillable!

Spellblade Best Accessories
The best accessories for the Spellblade build are the Mortal Haven Amulet, Ring of Elemental Balance, and Disciple’s Ring.
Mortal Haven
- Lesser Veiling: While below 25% Maximum Health, cast Arcane Veil every 20 seconds.
The Moral Haven Amulet works well for this build as it further buffs its defensive potential, automatically casting the powerful Arcane Veil shield spell when your character dips below 25% Health.

Ring of Elemental Balance
- Elemental Balance: +10% Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation
The Ring of Elemental Balance is a great option for this build as it increases our Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation by 10 percent. This makes our Elemental Spells even more deadly, perfectly fitting the Spellblade theme.

Disciple’s Ring
- Greater Innate Talent: +60 Maximum Essence
The Disciple’s Ring is one of the best options for any spellcaster in Avowed, with a whopping +60 Maximum Essence bonus, allowing you to cast more spells before needing to recover.

Combat Tips for the Spellblade Build
Mastering the Spellblade in Avowed requires balancing melee combat and magical preparation. No matter the combat scenarior, the Spellblade brings something to the table.
1. Defense and Buff tools
Cast Arcane Veil before combat starts to gain the best starting defense, reflecting projectiles and pushing back melee attackers at higher ranks. As you wade into battle, switch to your Two Handed weapon while you cast Bristling Frost – this further reduces incoming damage and freezes enemies nearby. Cast Barbaric Shout next to increase your Stun Damage and Heavy attack with your Two Hander to quickly build the enemies Stun Meter and finish them quickly.
2. Frozen Enemies
With the Spellblade build, you will frequently freeze surrounding enemies, completely taking them out of the fight and making them weak to Explosive damage. The easiest way to capitalize on this Frozen debuff is with the Devastating Kick ability, which explodes enemies at Rank 3 and has a short cooldown. You can also explode enemies with your Spirit Lance or Grimoire Snap abilities. This combo is devastating so make sure to use it!
3. Damage
Your best source of damage for the Spellblade build is your Two Handed weapon. Use this to quickly build stun when combined with Barbaric Shout. A fully stunned enemy will let you unleash a special attack combo for even more damage. When facing tightly packed groups of enemies swap to Spirit Lance or when battling a tricky ranged enemy use your Blackbow spell.
4. Healing and Control
Use Corrosive Siphon to stun lock enemies in place, draining their health and healing you back. You should use this ability at least once mid-fight even if at full health, as Rank 3 provides a temporary health shield at full health, greatly increasing your survivability for the rest of combat.
5. Maintain
In longer fights, make sure to swap back to your Grimoire of the Spellblade to recast Arcane Veil and use Grimoire Snap if needed for a quick stun.

Spellblade Best Companions
- Kai – Kai’s Fire and Ire ability to taunt enemies, and his second wind make him a reliable tank, which deals decent damage and stuns thanks to the low cooldown of Fire and Ire. His ability to pull aggro from enemies and take melee or ranged pressure off you for a few seconds is incredibly helpful when facing off against multiple enemies at once and particularly versus bosses.
- Giatta – As the primary healing companion in Avowed, Giatta is a very good companion to bring along with any melee build. Her abilities will help with emergency heals, plus increase attack speed and add temporary health for better survival.
The Final Word
The Spellblade build in Avowed is one of the most powerful hybrid playstyles, offering a fun balance between melee and spellcasting. Whether you prefer focused DPS with a big Two Handed sword, freezing enemies in place and exploding them to bits, or switching to unique summoned weapons like the Spirit Lance or Blackbow, there is something here for any playstyle.
