Octopath Traveler 0 gives you more control over your journey than ever before, but that freedom comes with big decisions. Choosing the right job for your protagonist can completely change how you experience combat, exploration, and story progression. In Octopath Traveler 0, only the protagonist can change or customize their job, while other characters have fixed jobs that cannot be altered.
At the beginning of the game, you decide on one of eight initial jobs for your own character – Merchant, Thief, Apothecary, Hunter, Cleric, Scholar, and Dancer – setting the tone for your adventure. For the first time in the series, players can fully customize their own protagonist’s job from the very beginning, allowing you to decide which path best fits your playstyle. The protagonist can freely swap between unlocked jobs outside of combat, allowing for flexible party roles with unique skills. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about jobs in Octopath Traveler 0!
There are a total of 18 job classes in Octopath Traveler 0. Eight of these can be unlocked by the protagonist, while the other ten are exclusive to certain characters in the game.

Octopath Traveler 0 Jobs Explained
In Octopath Traveler 0, jobs determine what weapons, skills, and combat roles each character can use, though the system has changed significantly from the first two games. This is similar to the mobile game and previous octopath traveler games that Square Enix released.
Your created protagonist (main character) is the only character who can fully customize jobs throughout the story. Unlike previous games that featured eight characters, Octopath Traveler 0 focuses on a single one whose form and job you customize. When creating your protagonist, you select their form, including appearance and background, and choose from several initial jobs at the start.
This shift to a single one main character means their progression defines your overall playstyle. You’ll start with one core job and then unlock the ability to switch to others as you advance through the Retribution and Restoration story arcs throughout the game. Every job comes with its own weapon types, stat growths, and exclusive skills that expand as you master them. Keep in mind that your path actions do not change based on your job class.
Other characters you recruit during your journey have fixed jobs, though some can gain new abilities or enhancements as their stories unfold. With over 30 potential character recruits, the focus shifts from changing everyone’s class to strategically choosing which characters you want on your team. Party composition becomes just as important as job selection because the right mix of roles can make even difficult encounters much easier.
The system also adds a layer of customization through skill mastery and equipment. Skill customization allows characters to spend Job Points (JP) to unlock active skills, and as you unlock more skills, you eventually gain access to Support Skills. Support Skills are passive abilities that can be equipped even if the job isn’t currently active, and are unlocked as you master jobs.
The cost to learn Battle Skills increases progressively as you unlock more skills within a single job. To unlock a new job, the protagonist must learn three skills from their last unlocked job, requiring a total of 430 JP. As you unlock new abilities with your main character, you can mix those learned skills between jobs on your other characters, letting you fine-tune your build and party composition even further! The idea behind allowing players to mix and match skills between jobs is to provide an innovative approach to customization, giving you more creative control over your party’s strengths.

Job Progression and Unlocking
In Octopath Traveler 0, mastering job progression is key to building a powerful and flexible protagonist. As you journey through Orsterra, your main character earns Job Points (JP) from random encounters and quest completions. These JP are the currency for unlocking new battle skills and support skills within each job, allowing you to tailor your playstyle and adapt to new challenges.
Each job – whether it’s the Merchant job, Apothecary job, or others – features a unique set of skills that can be unlocked in sequence. As you invest JP to learn new abilities, the cost for subsequent skills increases, making strategic planning essential. To unlock a new job, you’ll need to master a certain number of skills from your current job. For example, to access the powerful Warrior job, you must first learn three skills from the Merchant job, which requires a total of 430 JP. Similarly, the Hunter job becomes available after learning three skills from the Apothecary job, costing 530 JP.
This progression system encourages experimentation and rewards players who engage in random encounters to gather more JP. By unlocking a variety of battle skills and support skills, you can create a protagonist who excels in multiple roles, from frontline damage dealer to versatile support. Understanding how to efficiently earn and spend JP, and planning your job unlocks, is crucial for maximizing your party’s potential and taking full advantage of Octopath Traveler 0’s deep combat mechanics.
The Final Word
Octopath Traveler 0 reimagines the classic job system with greater focus on choice and team balance. Your hero’s job defines your core playstyle, while each recruit adds unique strengths to your lineup. Every class still feels true to its roots, but the new systems make planning and synergy more important than ever. Choose wisely, because in this upcoming game, the right job can make all the difference.
The new game launches on December 4, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. The game is developed by Acquire and published by Square Enix, continuing the studio’s signature HD-2D art style and storytelling tradition that began with the original Octopath Traveler.
