Why Play the Explosive Build in The Outer Worlds 2 (OW2)

If you want massive area damage, huge explosions, and multi-kills, then you should definitely play this explosive-focused build in The Outer Worlds 2. The demolitionist play style specializes in all things that go boom, and allows you to focus on area damage rather than worry about precision shots like you would with a Sniper Build. What’s helpful with this build is: you don’t need to be a perfect shooter to cause massive damage to one or more enemies. Plus, it’s always a fun and entertaining to blow things up!
The downsides to playing with explosives are, well you guessed it, killing yourself. You weren’t going to be precise like a sniper or gunslinger build and you will be ammo dependent. Specifically, grenades and constantly throwing and replacing them can be annoying. Therefore, pick up this build if you love high AOE damage, dislike aiming for kills only, and want to see things blow up!
| Explosive Build Pros | Explosive Build Cons |
|---|---|
| Huge Damage | Can Kill Yourself |
| Multi-Kill | Not Precise |
| High Fun Factor | Ammo Dependent |
Best Background for the Explosive Build

Professor is the best background for the Explosive build because you role play as a contract archaeologist with a background in artifacts. You can use any background you want, and it influences mainly dialogue and conversation vs. giving you a specific stat bonus. Another option would be Renegade if you wanted to RP as a bad guy on the run using explosives for ambushing the law. These are our suggestions below, but pick one that resonates with your characters background and story.
- Professor: Your talent for dealing with the more unsavory elements of artifact trafficking will serve you well in the Earth Directorate.
- Renegade: Joining the Earth Directorate seemed like a great way to solve the problems your ‘work’ history may have caused.

In The Outer Worlds 2, backgrounds are a purely role-playing choice, shaping your character’s history and personality rather than providing stat or skill bonuses. Unlike OW1, where backgrounds granted direct boosts, your selection here influences story, conversations, and how factions react to you. You play as an Earth Directorate Agent investigating dangerous Space-Time Rifts, with three major factions vying for control.
For a full breakdown of every option and its narrative impact, check out our The Outer Worlds 2 Backgrounds Guide.
Best Traits for the Explosive Build

Innovative is the best trait for the Explosives build because it increase the resources you receive when crafting ammo and throwable explosives, which will be extremely helpful.
If you want to select a second positive trait, go with Lucky. This trait boosts your Critical Chance which helps greatly with some of the faster explosive weapons we will get for this build including the Autospray SMG. Plus, with the Lucky trait you get some great solutions for solving story quests based on pure luck!
If you decide to grab two positive perks we recommend you go with Abrasive for your negative trait, which limits your standing with each faction – not a huge downside considering you are the type that tends to work solo and make your own rules!
Here’s our recommendation:
- Innovative (positive): crafting recipes for ammo and throwables is increased.
- Lucky (positive): +5% Critical Chance. Certain opportunities are just accessible to you.
- Abrasive (negative): Standing with any faction can never increase past Trusted. Limits discounts, Speech bonuses, and options with factions.

In The Outer Worlds 2, traits replace the original Outer World 1 attribute system and expand on the “Flaw” mechanic with a more structured approach. Traits come in two forms, positive and negative. You can take one positive trait with no downside, but choosing two positive traits requires selecting a negative trait as well.
Because they are permanent and cannot be respeced, it’s essential to pick traits that align with your long-term goals. For a full breakdown of every option and its trade-offs, see our Outer Worlds 2 Traits Guide, or jump to the Best Traits Ranked.
Best Skills for the Explosives Build

Explosives and Guns are the best skills for any demolition specialist in The Outer Worlds 2 because they increase your damage substantially.
The Explosives skill will obviously be the backbone of the build, causing 10% more damage with explosives for each skill point invested, but Guns is also important, especially at the start of the game as you won’t have access to good explosive options right away.
Engineering can be helpful not only to fix mechanical systems, but also to reduce your damage taken by 1% per level. The damage reduction isn’t specific, therefore making you much more durable in case you miss your grenade throw.
Speech will give you more dialogue and story options to progress the game while also increasing your damage with Perks like Space Ranger.
Below are the best skills for a Explosive build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Explosives (specialized): +10% Explosives Damage, +1% Damage Resistance against Explosives
- Guns (specialized): +10% Ranged Damage, +1% Armor Penetration
- Speech (non-specialized): +1 Speech Difficulty and lower speech checks can be overcome, +5% Damage to Humans
- Engineering (non-specialized): +1 Difficulty and lower mechanical systems can be fixed, +1% Damage Resistance

In The Outer Worlds 2, skills are fewer in number than in the original Outer Worlds, but each one has a bigger impact on your build. During character creation, you can specialize in up to two skills, allowing them to be leveled to your current level +2, while all others cap at your current level. This makes your specialization choices critical, as they can define your combat style, exploration tools, and dialogue options for the entire game.
Because your skill investment influences which perks you can unlock, it’s best to plan your build so that your background, traits, perks, and companions all support a shared goal. For a full list of every skill and its effects, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Skills Guide or our guide on the Best Skills Ranked.
Best Perks for the Explosives Build

Incendiary Chef, Demolitionist, and Lucky Strikes are the best Perks for an Explosives build in The Outer Worlds 2.
Incendiary Chef unlocks a key mechanic for the Explosives build, giving you access to the incredibly powerful Volatile Grenades. These grenades deal insane damage but explode automatically after a few seconds, so don’t hold on to them like you would other grenades!
Our capstone Perks, Demolitionist (Explosives 20) and Lucky Strikes (Guns 20) are also extremely powerful, especially when combined on this build. It is recommended that you unlock Demolitionist first, then work towards unlocking Lucky Strikes at end game. Check the leveling progression section down below for more information.
Below are the best perks for a Explosive build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Trophy Hunter: +5% Critical Chance; +15% Critical Chance against Strong enemies
- Grenadier: You unlock an additional throwable equipment slot. +10% Explosives Damage.
- Pitch/Tossball Winger: +20% Explosives Damage. Deal 50 physical damage on direct hit with a grenade or mine and staggers
- Connoisseur: +25% Healing from Food and Drink, +25% Inhaler Charge from Drugs
- Deep Drums: +50% Magazine Size
- Connoisseur: +25% Healing from Food and Drink, +25% Inhaler Charge from Drugs
- Tinkerer: +10% Damage with modded weapons. Increases by 2.5% per Engineering skill point invested.
- Bulletshield: +10% Damage Resistance; +10% Base Health
- Secret Recipe: Your explosives deal full damage across their entire blast zone.
- Hail Of Lead: +2% Damage per shot when using automatic or burst fire.
- Space Ranger: Your Speech skill also scales damage.
- Incendiary Chef: Can craft Volatile Grenades
- Contingency Screen: When your health hits 25%, the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus gadget automatically activates
- Demolitionist: All of your explosives have increased area of effect and can no longer deal damage to you.
- Lucky Strikes: +100% Critical Damage. Deal 20% of nearby hostile’s health in damage on killing with critical hit.

In The Outer Worlds 2, perks function like a hybrid of the first game’s system and Fallout’s perk charts, offering 90 unique perks spread across multiple tiers. You earn a perk point every even-numbered level. Unlike the first game, many perks now have specific skill prerequisites, so your character build must be planned with both skill leveling and perk selection in mind.
For a full list of perks and their requirements see our Outer Worlds 2 Perks Guide or The Best Perks Ranked guide.
Best Flaws for the Explosive Build

Flaws are optional selections that can make or break your build. For the Explosive build, the best Flaw to select will be Bibliomania as this gives you a sizable increase to your Maximum health (20%), but also reduces health by 30% after talking to any NPC. To take full advantage of this flaw you would simply wait for the two minute timer to expire after speaking with an NPC to begin combat in order to avoid the health debuff.
In The Outer Worlds 2, the Flaw system returns as a risk–reward mechanic that reacts to your in-game behavior. If you repeatedly perform certain actions, like staring at the sun, you may trigger a Flaw prompt, offering a permanent gameplay trade-off. Once accepted, Flaws cannot be removed, making them a lasting part of your character’s journey.
For a full list of Flaws see our Outer Worlds 2 Flaws Guide or you can check the Best Flaws Ranked Guide.
Best Armor for the Explosive Build

The Best Armor for an Explosives / Demolitionist build in The Outer Worlds 2 is the Bomb Suit Armor and Helmet.
Characters in The Outer Worlds 2 can equip both head and chest armor with a variety of stats. Each armor piece can have an available mod slot shown with the small rectangular icon. Not all the mods are known, but bonuses and mods will be critical to your build.
Hibernation Suit and Helmet
The Hibernation Suit and Helmet return to the Outer Worlds 2 from the original game and offer some decent protection and modding capability for an early Explosives Build. Both items can be found in the lockers on board your ship, the Incognito.

Bomb Suit and Helmet
The Bomb Suit and Helmet is uniquely crafted for an Explosives Build, making it a great choice that can also be obtained relatively early. The Bomb Suit itself comes with the Extra Cushion mod, reducing damage taken from explosives by 90% – that is huge, considering the amount of potential splash damage you will be dealing with on a build like this one!

Even better is the Bomb Suit Helmet though which includes the Lit Fuse mod which makes any explosive damage you deal also grant temporary health for your character. Temporary health acts as a shield which absorbs damage first before your health does, meaning that dealing consistent explosive damage on this build makes you basically invincible!

Zyranium Automech Suit
Looking for something different and unique? Try out the Zyranium Automech Suit! A unique Heavy Science Armor with excellent protection, hovering capabilities, and a mod that keeps you alive even with zero health left!

Best Weapons for the Explosive Build

The Best Weapons for the Explosive Build are the Autospray SMG (modded), Pitchball Machine, and Lock-On Rocket Launcher.
Autospray SMG
While not a unique weapon, the Autospray SMG is perfect for the Explosives build when combined with the right mods. Specifically we will look to add the Explosives Rounds and Double Barrel mods to this weapon to change the damage type over to Explosive and also double the number of shots fired. A basic Autospray SMG can be found aboard the Auntie’s Choice capital ship.

Pitchball Machine
The Pitchball Machine fires explosive pitchballs (really mini-rockets) that increase in damage with the amount of Tossball and Pitchball cards you have collected. What makes this weapon great is its high ammo capacity and rate of fire compared to slower explosive weapons such as the rocket launcher, plus it’s medium range allows you to “toss” explosives on grouped up enemies for tons of damage!

Agatha
Agatha is a unique Machine Gun that shoots exploding bullets! Thanks to the Agatha’s Surprise mod, this weapon fires 25% more slowly but its bullets explode on hit. Thanks to its explosive damage, the Agatha machine gun has some unique interactions in the Outer Worlds 2 that make it very powerful. For example, you can wear the Bomb Suit Helmet while using this weapon and gain infinite temporary health due to the Lit Fuse mod (see above).
Description: Finally! A gun named Agatha that shoots exploding bullets! There’s no mystery here!

Lock-On Rocket Launcher
The Lock-On Rocket Launcher is the ultimate in battlefield devastation. This weapon uses target locking to more accurately dispense rockets at medium to long range, blowing up everything in your path. I recommend you save this for groups of enemies or snipers who you need to flush out from cover as ammo can be scare unless you are excellent at crafting.

Unique Weapons and Science Weapons return, offering rare and powerful gear often tied to specific quests or hidden locations. Weapon modding has been overhauled, each weapon now has its own dedicated set of mods, allowing you to enhance performance or add unique effects tailored to that weapon. You can equip up to four weapons at a time and swap between them via a quick slot wheel, making it easy to adapt mid-fight. For a full list of weapons, their mods, and where to find them, see our Outer Worlds 2 Weapons Guide.
Best Companions for the Explosive Build

Tristan and Aza are the best companions for the Explosive build because they compliment your high AOE damage and explosive damage playstyle. Tristan is a tank type of companion that can easily distract your enemies while you line up your explosives for maximum damage. Aza also has a unique Perk which increases the player’s explosive damage by 25%, helping to push your damage through the roof!
Below is our best party composition setup for the Explosive build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Player — Role: AOE Ranged DPS — Suggested Gear: Heavy Armor with Grenade Launcher
- Tristan — Role: Tank – taunting and goading enemies to make them come to you.
- Aza — Role: Support and increased explosive damage
- Alternatives: Inez or Val instead of Aza if you want less overall damage but more healing options for higher difficulties.
Each companion brings a distinct combat role, such as melee tank, ranged DPS, or support. Moreover, each companion has their own personality and backstory. Expect unique abilities, personal quests, and an approval system that reacts to your decisions, influencing dialogue and possibly quest outcomes. For a complete breakdown of all known companions, their abilities, and best gear setups, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Companions Guide.

Best Consumables for the Explosive Build

In The Outer Worlds 2, consumables provide powerful temporary bonuses that can turn the tide of a fight or help you pass a critical skill check. These items can boost damage, increase defenses, restore health, improve movement speed, or enhance specific skills for dialogue and exploration. Consumables are typically found as loot, purchased from vendors, or crafted using the game’s workbench systems. The standouts of course for any demolitionist will be grenades of which there are known to be several types, including standard and shock grenades.
We will update this portion of the guide once more information is avalible.
How to Play the Explosive Build in the Outer Worlds 2

Your goal with the explosive build is to multi-kill as many enemies as possible. You can do this by funneling them into choke points with the environment or companions. Also load up on grenades, especially shock that can stun or lift enemies in the area for easy kills.
For survival, make sure to load up on inhalers and consumables that buff damage. You can also your gadgets to slow time with Tactical Time Dilation or N-Ray scanner to help see targets through walls. That way, you can turn the corner, throw a frag in a room with tons of enemies, and want the damage explode!
