Why Play Gunslinger in The Outer Worlds 2 (OW2)
The Gunslinger is your classic space cowboy themed pistol-wielding close ranged damage dealer. This is a theme build with a specific design to roleplay and excel as your very own galactic Marshall. With this build you can deal massive damage with high critical chance and weak point damage to nearby enemies. Increased Evasion also allows you to dodge enemy attacks easily.
The Gunslinger is a fun and combat-focused build for those that love to be in the middle of all the action. However, the build will lack the long distance sniping some players may enjoy from a long Range Sniper Build, though you can adapt and use a Sniper or Marksman Rifles. Lastly, the Gunslinger is primarily focused on pistols, combat, and optimizing for damage and may neglect some speech skills and dialogue. If that sounds good to you, then you’ll love what we created here!
| Gunslinger Build Pros | Gunslinger Build Cons |
|---|---|
| High Burst Damage | Lacks Long Range |
| Fun Theme | Weaker in Dialogue |
| High Damage | Combat Focused |
Best Background for the Gunslinger Build

Lawbringer is the best background for the Gunslinger build because you are a well known gunslinging Earth Directorate Agent. An alternative choice would be Renegade, while not a typical “gunslinger” it’s a background that plays to the law breaking solo lonewolf survivalist “bad” type of character.
- Lawbringer Description: You are a champion of the people, whether they want one or not.
- Renegade Description: You may have lived a life that skirted the laws of any colony you found yourself operating in, but that’s what you were paid for.

In The Outer Worlds 2, backgrounds are a purely role-playing choice, shaping your character’s history and personality rather than providing stat or skill bonuses. Unlike OW1, where backgrounds granted direct boosts, your selection here influences story, conversations, and how factions react to you. You play as an Earth Directorate Agent investigating dangerous Space-Time Rifts, with three major factions vying for control.
For a full breakdown of every option and its narrative impact, check out our The Outer Worlds 2 Backgrounds Guide.
Best Traits for Gunslinger Build

Lucky is the best trait for a Gunslinger build because it increase your critical chance by 5% and allows more dialogue and quest opportunities for you.
If you want to select a second positive trait, go with Brilliant. This trait gives you more skill points at the start of the game, providing more flexibility in creating your build. However, two positive traits require you to select one negative.
If you decide to grab two positive perks we recommend you go with Abrasive, which limits your standing with each faction – not a huge downside considering you are the type that tends to work solo and make your own rules!
- Lucky (positive): +5% Critical Chance. Certain opportunities are just accessible to you.
- Brilliant (positive): During skill selection, Specialize in 1 additional skill. Specialized skills start with two points.
- Abrasive (negative): Standing with any faction can never increase past Trusted. Limits discounts, Speech bonuses, and options with factions.

In The Outer Worlds 2, traits replace the original Outer World 1 attribute system and expand on the “Flaw” mechanic with a more structured approach. Traits come in two forms, positive and negative. You can take one positive trait with no downside, but choosing two positive traits requires selecting a negative trait as well.
Because they are permanent and cannot be respeced, it’s essential to pick traits that align with your long-term goals. For a full breakdown of every option and its trade-offs, see our Outer Worlds 2 Traits Guide, or jump to the Best Traits Ranked.
Best Skills for Gunslinger Build

Guns and Obervation are the best skills for the Gunslinger build in the Outer Worlds 2 because they increase your overall damage. The Guns skill increases ranged bonus damage and armor penetration while Observation increases weakspot damage and helps detect hidden objects. This gives you the two most important skils for a plasma pistol packing Gunslinger who aims for bulleyes to take advantage of Weakspots (critical).
You can also increase non-specialized skills or secondary skills outside of character creation. Therefore, look to increase Speech and Science!. Speech helps with speech checks but also increases damage to humans. Meanwhile, Science helps with gadget energy, which will be important to take advantage of tactical time dilation.
Finally, we recommend all character builds place some points into Lockpick to help with finding additional loot and opening locked containers. Additionally, you will gain 1% Evasion per point invested, making you harder to hit.
Below are the best skills for a Gunslinger build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Guns (specialized): +10% Ranged Damage, +1% Armor Penetration.
- Observation (specialized): +1 Difficulty and lower hidden objects can be found, +15% Weakspot Damage.
- Speech (non-specialized): +1 Difficulty and lower speech checks can be overcome, +5% Damage to Humans.
- Science! (non-specialized): +7 Gadget Energy Meter Max, +10% more stacks of non-Physical Damage Type side-effects.
- Lockpick (optional): easily open locked containers and doors, providing more loot and easier access to areas, plus 1% evasion per point.

In The Outer Worlds 2, skills are fewer in number than in the original Outer Worlds, but each one has a bigger impact on your build. During character creation, you can specialize in up to two skills, allowing them to be leveled to your current level +2, while all others cap at your current level. This makes your specialization choices critical, as they can define your combat style, exploration tools, and dialogue options for the entire game.
Because your skill investment influences which perks you can unlock, it’s best to plan your build so that your background, traits, perks, and companions all support a shared goal. For a full list of every skill and its effects, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Skills Guide or our guide on the Best Skills Ranked.
Best Perks for Gunslinger Build

Trophy Hunter, Crabble Rancher, and Eden Windage are the best perks for the Gunslinger build in The Outer Worlds 2 because they increase your damage, critical chance and Weakspot (headshot) damage.
Trophy hunter has a 5% increase to critical chance and an additional 15% vs. bosses which is extremely good. Plus, this critical bonus stacks on top of the Lucky trait, giving you massive burst damage potential.
Crabble Rancher can be taken next for another 10% Ranged Damage plus more Critical Chance when your magazine is half empty. Eden Windage is also powerful, giving your pistols increased range and weakspot damage.
Additionally, look to unlock Ninja as a defensive perk which boosts evasion while sprinting and or sliding. Movement vs. pure armor is your means of survival and this will help while running away from attackers or getting back to cover.
Below are the best perks for a Gunslinger build in The Outer Worlds 2:
- Trophy Hunter: +5% Crit Chance, +20% vs Bosses
- Pickpocket: Steal keys and other items, ammo or bits.
- Through the Keyhole: +50% Weapon Range
- Crabble Rancher: Deal Bonus Damage: +10% Ranged Damage, +20% Critical Chance
- Eden Windage: +25% Weapon Range, +25% Weakspot Damage
- Trick Shot: Weakspot kills ricochet, dealing damage to a second nearby target.
- Ninja: Increased evasion while sprinting/sliding; more based on equipped armor.
- Deep Drums: +50% Magazine Size / ammo capacity
- Keen Observer: +25% Weakspot Damage
- Point blank artist: deal bonus to damage to near enemies
- Serendipitous Slayer: +10% Critical Chance, Critical Hits reload some ammo
- Slow-more: +25% Evasion Chance while in TTD, +1 Energy on evading damage
- Rapid Recharge: Energy Recharge Rate +500% for 5s
- Contingency Screen: When your health hits 25%, the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus gadget automatically activates
- Tinkerer: +10% Damage with modded weapons. Increases by 2.5% per Engineering skill point.
- Lucky Strikes: +100% Critical Damage; Deals 20% of nearby hostile’s health in damage on killing with critical hit

In The Outer Worlds 2, perks function like a hybrid of the first game’s system and Fallout’s perk charts, offering 90 unique perks spread across multiple tiers. You earn a perk point every even-numbered level. Unlike the first game, many perks now have specific skill prerequisites, so your character build must be planned with both skill leveling and perk selection in mind.
For a full list of perks and their requirements see our Outer Worlds 2 Perks Guide or The Best Perks Ranked guide.
Best Flaws for Gunslinger Build

Flaws are optional selections that can make or break your build. For the Gunslinger build, the best Flaw to select would be Overprepared. The Overprepared Flaw gives you 50% more ammo at the expense of a damage debuff IF you reach zero ammo. The easy way to avoid any negative impact of this flaw is to simply reload your weapon before reaching zero ammo, meaning you’ll get the benefits without any of the downside!
The Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome is another powerfl Flaw which gives you +15% expereince earned, but requires you to make fast dialogue choices. If you take your time with dialogue choices though, don’t select this one as it will make dialogue choices much harder.

In The Outer Worlds 2, the Flaw system returns as a risk–reward mechanic that reacts to your in-game behavior. If you repeatedly perform certain actions, like staring at the sun, you may trigger a Flaw prompt, offering a permanent gameplay trade-off. Once accepted, Flaws cannot be removed, making them a lasting part of your character’s journey.
For a full list of Flaws see our Outer Worlds 2 Flaws Guide or you can check the Best Flaws Ranked Guide.
Best Armor for the Gunslinger Build

The best armor for a Gunslinger Build in The Outer Worlds 2 is the Police Outfit, Patient Step and Prescience.
Characters in The Outer Worlds 2 can equip both head and chest armor with a variety of stats. Each armor piece can have an available mod slot shown with the small rectangular icon. Not all the mods are known, but bonuses and mods will be critical to your build.
Police Officer Clothing and Hat
A great early option for the Gunslinger build is the Police Outfit and Hat which can be stolen from the Police Station in Fairview. The Police Officer Hat boosts your Critical Chance by 5% and Critical Damage by 40% and also has an open mod slot. The Police Officer clothing doesn’t do much in terms of stats but it also has an open mod slot that can be used to slot a mod like Defensive Plating for extra armor.
Patient Step Unique Armor
The Patient Step unique armor can be found via the Order Of The Ascendant quest line and includes the Precog modification causing movement while in Tactical Time Dilation to no longer drain energy. This is one of the best mods you can get as a Gunslinger build letting you stay in TTD for longer. Combine this with an additional mod for defense such as Crisis Defenses and you will be set! Check our Patient Step guide for more details.

Burnished Gas Slinger Helm
The Burnished Gas Slinger helm has a great look, plus a big bonus to Critical Damage (+85%). This helmet also has an open mod slot for something defensive or utility oriented such as the Rejuvenation Converter mod which removes toxicity when you take damage.

Prescience Unique Armor
The Prescience Armor, acquired on Cloister as part of the main story quest, is another excellent end game armor for the Gunslinger build. This medium armor gives you a solid balance of Evasion, Damage Resistance and Combat Sprint Speed but also includes the powerful Error Correction mod, which gives you even more Evasion chance based on your Science! skill.

Best Weapons for Gunslinger Build

The unique Rattler Pistol, Biggest Fan Pistol, and Heavy Revolver are the best weapons for the Gunslinger build in The Outer Worlds 2.
Rattler Pistol
The Rattler is one of the best unique weapons in The Outer Worlds 2 – a modified Revolver which shoots 6 shotgun rounds in one shot. This is the ultimate gunslinger weapon which can be obtained at the start of the game with just a few bits saved up. Make sure to get it!

Plasma Pistol
Plasma Pistols can be purchased from many vendors on the planet Eden and are great because they also deal Burn damage. These are especially powerful against Creatures and low armor Humans, though weak versus Automechs. Hold down the fire button to increase its damage output.
Bio Mass Pistol
The Bio Mass Pistol can be purchased from Vendors. Also, a Burst modded Bio Mass Pistol can be stolen from Commander Kaur’s War Chest in Fairfield.
The Bio Mass Pistol deals corrosion damage, making it an ideal weapon for dealing with heavily armored Human enemies such as Heavy Protectorate soldiers.

Heavy Revolver
Eventually we recommend finding a Heavy Revolver to add some additional fire power to this build. This is a common weapon that can be purchased from Vendors and also found in containers as loot. One of the best mods you can get for the Heavy Revolver is the Reinforced Barrel Mod which increases the weapon’s range while also reducing recoil. You can also attach a Shock Barrel to force this weapon to deal shock damage, making it incredibly effective versus Automechanicals.

Biggest Fan
The Biggest Fan unique pistol is the ultimate weapon for increasing Critical Hit Chance and Weak spot Damage, with a 5% bonus for each every time the weapon is fired. This effect stacks and is cleared after a short time. So if you enjoy the hip firing your weapon extremely fast this would be the way to go.

Emergency Stop
Emergency Stop is a unique rifle that deals shock damage. While not a Pistol, it is an effective long range weapon against Automechanicals, of which you will face several during your adventures. Having a shock weapon is crucial for any build as the shock status effect very easily stuns automechs, causing them to break down and stop attacking you.

The Simplifier
For a long range option we recommend the Simplifier Rifle. This is a unique Sniper Rifle which has insane Weak Spot Damage and no falloff point due to the Pinpoint Assassin mod it comes with. As you progress through the game, you’ll come across a handful of long range engagements where have a longer range weapon comes in handy.

In The Outer Worlds 2, weapons retain the variety and flexibility of the first game while introducing new customization options. Players can choose from melee weapons, handguns, long guns, heavy weapons, and more, each with different damage types like physical, plasma, shock, or corrosion. Enemies will have resistances and weaknesses, so keeping a diverse loadout ensures you’re ready for any encounter. Skills and perks can further boost weapon effectiveness, making your choices in character creation directly influence your combat power.
Unique Weapons and Science Weapons return, offering rare and powerful gear often tied to specific quests or hidden locations. Weapon modding has been overhauled, each weapon now has its own dedicated set of mods, allowing you to enhance performance or add unique effects tailored to that weapon. You can equip up to four weapons at a time and swap between them via a quick slot wheel, making it easy to adapt mid-fight. For a full list of weapons, their mods, and where to find them, see our Outer Worlds 2 Weapons Guide.
Best Companions for Gunslinger Build

Marisol and Niles are the best companions for a Gunslinger build because they compliment your medium range Pistol setup. Marisol is a ranged specialist who also brings several buffs to the group for gadgets. Meanwhile, Niles can taunt and goad enemies, drawing their fire and attention whilst letting you get off a clean shot. Plus, with Niles’ Field Tinkering Trait the player can craft more ammo at any time.
Alternatively, you can swap in Inez or Val for some increased healing for harder difficulties.
Below is our best party composition setup for the Gunslinger build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Player: Medium Range DPS – Light Armor for increased speed and evasion
- Marisol: Support, debuffs and gadget energy generation
- Niles: Tank and distraction
- Alternatives: Instead of Marisol, go with Inez or VAL for increased healing and buffs.
Each companion brings a distinct combat role, such as melee tank, ranged DPS, or support. Moreover, each companion has their own personality and backstory. Expect unique abilities, personal quests, and an approval system that reacts to your decisions, influencing dialogue and possibly quest outcomes. For a complete breakdown of all known companions, their abilities, and best gear setups, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Companions Guide.
Best Gadget for Gunslinger Build

Tactical Time Dilation is the best gadget for a Gunslinger build because it slows down time. This helps with aiming for weak points, or shooting multiple bullets in a second. Alternatively, the N-Ray Scanner can be used because it grants a 20% critical bonus while active. Use N-Ray if you’re confident in hitting targets, or TTD if you need help with aiming.
Gadgets use a unique energy which can be used in one of four ways. You can swap gadgets anytime you want via the UI Wheel. While there is a primary gadget that we recommend, feel free to swap as you encounter different circumstances where they could be useful. Check out our full guide here, or a summary below:
- Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus: use for high damage situations or hazards
- N-Ray Scanner: look through walls to identify targets before charging into a room
- Auntie’s Acidic Dematerializer: destroy corpses when sneaking around
- Tactical Time Dilation Gadget: helpful when aiming or closing the gap on any build

Best Consumables for Gunslinger Build

In The Outer Worlds 2, consumables provide powerful temporary bonuses that can turn the tide of a fight or help you pass a critical skill check. These items can boost damage, increase defenses, restore health, improve movement speed, or enhance specific skills for dialogue and exploration. Consumables are typically found as loot, purchased from vendors, or crafted using the game’s workbench systems.
We will update this portion of the guide once more information is avalible.
How to Play Gunslinger in the Outer Worlds 2

The core combat gameplay for the Gunslinger revolves around weakpoint shots, critical burst damage, and playing a medium to close range while focusing on priority targets. Make sure to reload often, especially before your weapon’s magazine hits zero if using the Overprepared Flaw.
For gadgets, you will want Tactical Time Dialation which slows down time and allows you to get more weakpoint shots in a shorter timespan. This is shown on your User Interface as a blue indicator that drains over time. Each shot will also drain your TTD, but it allows for high powered burst weapons like Pistols and Shotguns to burst targets quickly.
Open with a high burst shot and setup your companions so that they can support you at close and long range. For survival, use the Inhaler in consumables to lower damage. Moreover, move constantly from side to side and don’t forget to run as some skills and perks can lower incoming damage on the move.
The Outer Worlds 2 Gunslinger Build FAQ
1. What is the best background for the Gunslinger build?
Lawbringer is the best choice for a classic space marshal roleplay, while Renegade fits a law-breaking lone wolf style. Background choice affects dialogue and faction reactions only, not combat stats, so pick whichever fits your preferred story.
2. What is the best pistol to get early in the game?
The Rattler is the best early pistol, a unique modified revolver that fires six shotgun rounds in a single shot and can be purchased with a small amount of bits near the start of the game. Get it as soon as possible.
3. Does Lucky stack with Trophy Hunter for critical chance?
Yes. Lucky’s 5% Critical Chance and Trophy Hunter’s 5% general plus 20% versus bosses all apply independently, making boss fights in particular extremely burst-heavy when combined with the Biggest Fan pistol’s stacking weakspot bonus.
4. What is Tactical Time Dilation and why does the Gunslinger need it?
Tactical Time Dilation is a gadget that slows time, giving you a window to land multiple weakspot shots on priority targets before they can react. It is the build’s primary combat tool for burst windows and pairs directly with the Slow-more perk for additional evasion while active.
5. What is the Overprepared Flaw and how do you avoid its downside?
Overprepared gives you 50% more ammo but applies a damage debuff if you reach zero ammo. The downside is completely avoidable by simply reloading before your magazine empties, making it one of the best risk-free Flaws in the game.
6. Which companions work best with the Gunslinger build?
Marisol and Niles are the top pairing. Marisol provides ranged support and gadget energy buffs, while Niles taunts enemies and draws fire so you can land clean weakspot shots. Swap Marisol for Inez or Val on higher difficulties if you need more healing.
