Why Play a Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2 (OW2)
The Science Build is entirely unique in The Outer Worlds 2. With some truly bizarre and weird weaponry, the Science Build uses a niche approach to combat. With your Shrink Ray you can take dangerous enemies out of commission, and with status effect weapons you can burn, shock and corrode everything else in your path. With a bit of Hacking, automechanicals are also easily bent to your will. If you’re looking for the ultimate Mad Scientist playthrough in The Outer Worlds 2, this is the build for you!
| Science Build Pros | Science Build Cons |
|---|---|
| Shrinks enemies! | Lacks Long Range |
| Powerful Status Effects | Weaker Resistances and Defense |
| Best Gadget User | Requires a lot of weapon swapping |
Best Background for the Science Build

Professor is the best Background for the Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2, giving you the best flavor dialogue options for your highly intelligent playstyle.
A Roustabout background might also be an interesting choice as you perhaps fell into your research by getting lucky and coming across some powerful items.
- Professor Description: Some say your expertise was honed during years spent aboard a colonist ship, where you studied ancient artifacts in deep space. Fortunately, your talent for dealing with the more unsavory elements of artifact trafficking will serve you well in the Earth Directorate.
- Roustabout Description: One accidental death of a well-known villain later, you’re now known as a gunslinging Earth Directorate agent not to be trifled with. You often find yourself wondering if this ‘Earth Directorate’ has any good cashier openings.

In The Outer Worlds 2, backgrounds are a purely role-playing choice, shaping your character’s history and personality rather than providing stat or skill bonuses. Unlike OW1, where backgrounds granted direct boosts, your selection here influences story, conversations, and how factions react to you. You play as an Earth Directorate Agent investigating dangerous Space-Time Rifts, with three major factions vying for control.
For a full breakdown of every option and its narrative impact, check out our The Outer Worlds 2 Backgrounds Guide.
Best Traits for the Science Build

Innovative is the best trait for the Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2 because it makes crafting recipes more effective, allowing you to create more items, consumables and ammo with fewer resources.
If you want to select a second positive trait, go with Brilliant. This trait gives you more skill points at the start of the game, providing more flexibility in creating your build. However, two positive traits require you to select one negative.
If you decide to grab two positive perks we recommend you go with Abrasive, which limits your standing with each faction – not a huge downside considering you are the type that tends to work solo and make your own rules!
- Innovative (positive): Some crafting recipes are more effective and require fewer items.
- Brilliant (positive): During skill selection, Specialize in 1 additional skill. Specialized skills start with two points.
- Abrasive (negative): Standing with any faction can never increase past Trusted. Limits discounts, Speech bonuses, and options with factions.

In The Outer Worlds 2, traits replace the original Outer World 1 attribute system and expand on the “Flaw” mechanic with a more structured approach. Traits come in two forms, positive and negative. You can take one positive trait with no downside, but choosing two positive traits requires selecting a negative trait as well.
Because they are permanent and cannot be respeced, it’s essential to pick traits that align with your long-term goals. For a full breakdown of every option and its trade-offs, see our Outer Worlds 2 Traits Guide, or jump to the Best Traits Ranked.
Best Skills for the Science Build

Science! and Guns are the best skills to start with for the Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2.
The Science Skill increases your Gadget Energy Meter Max by 7 and non-Physical Damage side-effect stacks by 10% per skill point invested. This means that you will be able to use Gadgets such as Tactical Time Dilation for a lot longer compared to other builds AND you also are great with weapon effects such as Plasma, Corrosion and Shock.
Guns is also a recommended skill because so many unique Guns in The Outer Worlds 2 fit the Science theme even if they aren’t specifically Science Weapons, so maxing your Gun skill will greatly increase your overall damage.
With the Brilliant Trait, you can specialize into a third skill and we recommend Hack for this, as this will let you hack into automechanicals, disabling them or turning them against your enemies.
Finally, we recommend all character builds place some points into Lockpick to help with finding additional loot and opening locked containers. Additionally, you will gain 1% Evasion per point invested, making you harder to hit.
Below are the best skills for a Science build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Science! (specialized): +10 Gadget Energy Max, +10% more stacks of non-Physical Damage Type side-effects
- Guns (specialized): +10% Ranged Damage, +1% Armor Penetration.
- Hack (specialized): +1 Difficulty and lower Hack checks can be overcome, +5% Damage to Automechanicals.
- Lockpick (optional): easily open locked containers and doors, providing more loot and easier access to areas, plus 1% evasion per point.

In The Outer Worlds 2, skills are fewer in number than in the original Outer Worlds, but each one has a bigger impact on your build. During character creation, you can specialize in up to two skills, allowing them to be leveled to your current level +2, while all others cap at your current level. This makes your specialization choices critical, as they can define your combat style, exploration tools, and dialogue options for the entire game.
Because your skill investment influences which perks you can unlock, it’s best to plan your build so that your background, traits, perks, and companions all support a shared goal. For a full list of every skill and its effects, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Skills Guide or our guide on the Best Skills Ranked.
Best Perks for the Science Build

Trophy Hunter, Commando, and Hungry Guns are the best Perks for a Science Build. Trophy Hunter provides more bonus Critical Chance versus strong enemies and bosses, while Commando unlocks an additional weapon slot, allowing you to hold and switch between a wider variety of weapons (essential here).
The Hungry Guns perk is an amazing option when you invest in Bio-mass weapons such as The Goomerang or Boarstblaster, as this doubles the ammo your weapon can hold before reloading.
Below are the best perks for a Science build in The Outer Worlds 2:
- Trophy Hunter: +5% Crit Chance, +20% vs Bosses
- Commando: Unlock an additional weapon equipment slot.
- Manual Reset: Automechanicals are stunned for 20s, +10% Damage to Automechanicals
- Through the Keyhole: +50% Weapon Range
- Ninja: Increased evasion while sprinting/sliding; more in light armor.
- Connoisseur: +25% Healing from Food and Drink, +25% Inhaler Charge from Drugs

- Hungry Guns: +100% Bio-mass Ammo Pool Size; +10% Corrosion Damage
- Gun Runner: -50% Ranged Weapon Spread, Movement Penalty to Accuracy -50%
In The Outer Worlds 2, perks function like a hybrid of the first game’s system and Fallout’s perk charts, offering 90 unique perks spread across multiple tiers. You earn a perk point every even-numbered level. Unlike the first game, many perks now have specific skill prerequisites, so your character build must be planned with both skill leveling and perk selection in mind.
For a full list of perks and their requirements see our Outer Worlds 2 Perks Guide or The Best Perks Ranked guide.
Best Flaws for a Science Build

Flaws are optional selections that can make or break your build. For the a Science build, the best Flaw to select would be Overprepared. The Overprepared Flaw gives you 50% more ammo at the expense of a damage debuff IF you reach zero ammo. The easy way to avoid any negative impact of this flaw is to simply reload your weapon before reaching zero ammo, meaning you’ll get the benefits without any of the downside!
The Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome is another powerful Flaw which gives you +15% experience earned, but requires you to make fast dialogue choices. If you take your time with dialogue choices though, don’t select this one as it will make dialogue choices much harder.

In The Outer Worlds 2, the Flaw system returns as a risk–reward mechanic that reacts to your in-game behavior. If you repeatedly perform certain actions, like staring at the sun, you may trigger a Flaw prompt, offering a permanent gameplay trade-off. Once accepted, Flaws cannot be removed, making them a lasting part of your character’s journey.
For a full list of Flaws see our Outer Worlds 2 Flaws Guide or you can check the Best Flaws Ranked Guide.
Best Armor for the Science Build

The best armor for the Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2 is GARY or Patient Step.
Characters in The Outer Worlds 2 can equip both head and chest armor with a variety of stats. Each armor piece can have an available mod slot shown with the small rectangular icon. Not all the mods are known, but bonuses and mods will be critical to your build.
Hibernation Suit and Helmet
The Hibernation Suit and Helmet return to the Outer Worlds 2 from the original game and offer some decent protection and modding capability for an early Science Build. Both items can be found in the lockers on board your ship, the Incognito.

Patient Step Unique Armor
The Patient Step unique armor can be found via the Order Of The Ascendant quest line and includes the Precog modification causing movement while in Tactical Time Dilation to no longer drain energy. This is one of the best mods you can get for the Science build, letting you stay in TTD for longer. Plus, it looks like a Scientist or Doctor’s jacket, which fits our theme perfectly! Combine this with an additional mod for defense such as Crisis Defenses and you will be set! Check our Patient Step guide for more details.

GARY Science Armor
For the full Science Build experience, consider using the unique Science Armor called GARY. This armor will periodically lash out with spiny tendrils to thrash and tear enemies apart. The Damage dealt increases with your Medical and Science skill.

Best Weapons for the Science Build

The Shrink Ray, Rattler, Goomerang and Big Bang are the Best Weapons available to the Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2.
Rattler Pistol
The Rattler is a unique modified Revolver which shoots 6 shotgun rounds in one shot. When modified to use a Plasma Barrel, this is the ultimate in terms of science-packed damage.
Description: You asked for it, now you have it…a shotgun in the form of a revolver!
- Ammo Type: Short Rounds
- Magazine Size: 6
- Rate Of Fire: 6.3/s
- Weak Spot Bonus: +40%
- Mods: Barrel (empty), Snake Shot

Bio Mass Pistol
The Bio Mass Pistol can be purchased from Vendors. Also, a Burst modded Bio Mass Pistol can be stolen from Commander Kaur’s War Chest in Fairfield.
The Bio Mass Pistol deals corrosion damage, making it an ideal early weapon for dealing with heavily armored Human enemies such as Heavy Protectorate soldiers.

Shrink Ray
The Shrink Ray is the most useful Science Weapon in The Outer Worlds 2, shrinking enemies down to boot-smashing size. However, this weapon requires a LOT of ammo, and strong enemies must be weakened first before you can use it on them. Still, this fulfills the Scientist fantasy quite well and is extremely strong at taking out enemies if you plan for it.
Check our Shrink Ray Guide for the Outer Worlds 2!

The Goomerang
The Goomerang is the ultimate Bio-mass weapon in The Outer Worlds 2. This is a shotgun powered with Corrosion damage that also locks onto targets, quickly melting them before your eyes. With the right perks, this weapon is absolutely deadly from close range.

Big Bang
The Big Bang is the largest and most devastating science weapon in the game. It uses material harvested from rifts to shoot a giant ball of energy capable of vaporizing everything in its path. Because the ammunition for this weapon is extremely rare, it is a weapon best reserved for dangerous situations where maximum firepower is required.
Big Bang can be obtained at the EARL research facility on the planet Cloister. Check our Big Bang Science Weapon Guide.

In The Outer Worlds 2, weapons retain the variety and flexibility of the first game while introducing new customization options. Players can choose from melee weapons, handguns, long guns, heavy weapons, and more, each with different damage types like physical, plasma, shock, or corrosion. Enemies will have resistances and weaknesses, so keeping a diverse loadout ensures you’re ready for any encounter. Skills and perks can further boost weapon effectiveness, making your choices in character creation directly influence your combat power.
Unique Weapons and Science Weapons return, offering rare and powerful gear often tied to specific quests or hidden locations. Weapon modding has been overhauled, each weapon now has its own dedicated set of mods, allowing you to enhance performance or add unique effects tailored to that weapon. You can equip up to four weapons at a time and swap between them via a quick slot wheel, making it easy to adapt mid-fight. For a full list of weapons, their mods, and where to find them, see our Outer Worlds 2 Weapons Guide.
Best Companions for the Science Build

Marisol and Inez are the best companions for a Science build because they compliment your medium range support playstyle. Marisol is a ranged specialist who can provide solid DPS while also helping to regenerate your Gadget energy.
Meanwhile, Inez can boost your healing and damage with her own companion skills.
Below is our best party composition setup for the Science build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Player — Medium Range DPS – Light Armor for increased speed and evasion
- Inez — Role: healing and support
- Marisol — Role: Range Sniper and crowd control
Each companion brings a distinct combat role, such as melee tank, ranged DPS, or support. Moreover, each companion has their own personality and backstory. Expect unique abilities, personal quests, and an approval system that reacts to your decisions, influencing dialogue and possibly quest outcomes. For a complete breakdown of all known companions, their abilities, and best gear setups, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Companions Guide.
Best Gadget for the Science Build

Tactical Time Dilation is the best gadget for a Science build because it slows down time. This helps with aiming for weak points, or shooting multiple bullets in a second. Alternatively, the N-Ray Scanner can be used because it grants a 20% critical bonus while active. Use N-Ray if you’re confident in hitting targets, or TTD if you need help with aiming.
Gadgets use a unique energy which can be used in one of four ways. You can swap gadgets anytime you want via the UI Wheel. While there is a primary gadget that we recommend, feel free to swap as you encounter different circumstances where they could be useful. Check out our full guide here, or a summary below:
- Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus: use for high damage situations or hazards
- N-Ray Scanner: look through walls to identify targets before charging into a room
- Auntie’s Acidic Dematerializer: destroy corpses when sneaking around
- Tactical Time Dilation Gadget: helpful when aiming or closing the gap on any build

Best Consumables for the Science Build

In The Outer Worlds 2, consumables provide powerful temporary bonuses that can turn the tide of a fight or help you pass a critical skill check. These items can boost damage, increase defenses, restore health, improve movement speed, or enhance specific skills for dialogue and exploration. Consumables are typically found as loot, purchased from vendors, or crafted using the game’s workbench systems.
How to Play a Science Build in the Outer Worlds 2

The core combat gameplay for the Science Build in The Outer Worlds 2 revolves around using the Shrink Ray effectively. As mentioned in the Weapons section, the Shrink Ray can be incredibly powerful in the right hands. The best way we’ve found to use it is early on in a fight to Shrink weaker enemies and smash them, quickly taking them out. Alternately, you could also save this for stronger foes, but you’ll need to weaken their health first before the Ray can use its effect.
Between Shrinking enemies and moving back and forth to find cover, use Plasma and Corrosion weapons such as The Goomerang or Rattler with a Plasma Barrel to decimate enemies fast. As a Science specialist, your status effect damage stacks faster, so these weapons become even more effective for you over time.
