Why Play Stealth in The Outer Worlds 2 (OW2)

Stealth builds in any RPG are known for high burst damage, detection avoidance, and of course stealing. In the Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian Entertainment has expanded on the sneak skill mechanics, making it one of the strongest and most enjoyable playstyles in the game.
With this build, you will have incredibly high damage, mobility, and the ability to pickpocket items thanks to our stealth mode focus. Enemies hit take a ton of sneak damage and weak point damage, letting you focus on melee weapons or the guns skill if you prefer.
Your stealth skills are not without any downsides, as your damage output will be lower without sneak attack damage such as versus bosses and some story encounters. However most enemies are quite weak to the outer worlds 2 stealth build, making this an extremely powerful playstyle.
This build will aim to optimize a player looking for a well-rounded stealth build effective in both melee and ranged combat.
| Stealth Build Pros | Stealth Build Cons |
|---|---|
| One-Shot Damage | Squishy |
| High Mobility | Situation Dependent |
| Stealing Items | Requires Patience |
How Stealth Works in The Outer Worlds 2

The Stealth system in the Outer Worlds 2 features a UI element for detection. Players will have to manage being detected via footsteps and their weapon’s sound radius, crouch movement speed, and line of sight. Encounters versus multiple enemies are more challening as you must manage all of these factors versus nearby enemies.
Players can mitigate detection with perks, skills, traits, and armor loadout. Therefore, you’ll want to crouch to activate sneak / stealth, then look above individual enemies heads as the bar expands stop moving or move back to avoid detection. Once you gain access to further stealth capabilities via Perks, it becomes significantly easier while also increasing sneak attack damage through the roof!
Best Background for the Stealth Build

Renegade is the best background for the Stealth build because you play as a lawless rogue operating on the fringes of society. An alternative choice would be Roustabout, which type of jack of all trades. Ultimately, the background choice will not influence stats, so pick one that sticks out for your individual characters story goals.
- Renegade: You may have lived a life that skirted the laws of any colony you found yourself operating in, but that’s what you were paid for.
- Roustabout: you’re now known as a gunslinging Earth Directorate agent not to be trifled with.

In The Outer Worlds 2, backgrounds are a purely role-playing choice, shaping your character’s history and personality rather than providing stat or skill bonuses. Unlike OW1, where backgrounds granted direct boosts, your selection here influences story, conversations, and how factions react to you. You play as an Earth Directorate Agent investigating dangerous Space-Time Rifts, with three major factions vying for control.
For a full breakdown of every option and its narrative impact, check out our The Outer Worlds 2 Backgrounds Guide.
Best Traits for the Stealth Build

Nimble is the best trait for the Stealth Build because it grants +25% crouch speed, and +25% combat sprint speed. The Nimble trait helps increase your mobility while sneaking around for melee stealth kills or running at range to avoid incoming damage.
If you want to select a second positive trait, go with Brilliant. This trait gives you more skill points at the start of the game, providing more flexibility in creating your build. However, two positive traits require you to select one negative.
If you decide to grab two positive perks we recommend you go with Sickly, which limits your maximum health and healing potential – not a huge downside considering that if you play this stealth build well you should never get hit!
- Nimble (positive): +25% Crouch Speed, +25% Combat Sprint Speed.
- Brilliant (positive): During skill selection, Specialize in 1 additional skill. Specialized skills start with two points.
- Sickly (negative): -15% Base Health, -15 Toxicity Crash Threshold. Injuries and crashing from primers are more likely.

In The Outer Worlds 2, traits replace the original Outer World 1 attribute system and expand on the “Flaw” mechanic with a more structured approach. Traits come in two forms, positive and negative. You can take one positive trait with no downside, but choosing two positive traits requires selecting a negative trait as well.
Because they are permanent and cannot be respecced, it’s essential to pick traits that align with your long-term goals. For a full breakdown of every option and its trade-offs, see our Outer Worlds 2 Traits Guide or our Best Traits Ranked guide.
Best Skills for the Stealth Build

Sneak, Lockpick, Guns, and Melee are the best skills for the Stealth build in the Outer Worlds 2. Sneak helps with increased damage while in “sneak” or crouch along with decreased detection. Lockpick, while helpful at opening chests, also allows you to unlock more powerful perks and should be a priority.
When it comes to weapon skills, you should increase both guns and melee to a point for core skills. You will be using both melee and ranged weapons for stealth combat to have the best mix of ranged options at your disposal. Guns are more plentiful early on, while you can then invest as pure melee and weakspot damage focused later on.
Consider placing skill points into lockpick and hacking as secondary skills to help you progress easier through the story. The lockpick skill helps you get through a ton of doors and find even better loot in The Outer Worlds 2.
Thee best skills for a Stealth build in the Outer Worlds 2 are:
- Sneak (specialized): +35% Sneak Attack Damage, -2% NPC Awareness Detection Rate
- Melee (specialized): +10% Melee Damage, -2.5% Damage Received while Blocking
- Guns (non-specialized): +10% Ranged Damage, +1% Armor Penetration
- Lockpick (non-specialized): +1 Difficulty and lower locked chests and containers can be opened, +1% Evasion Chance

In The Outer Worlds 2, skills are fewer in number than in the original Outer Worlds, but each one has a bigger impact on your build. During character creation, you can specialize in up to two skills, allowing them to be leveled to your current level +2, while all others cap at your current level. This makes your specialization choices critical, as they can define your combat style, exploration tools, and dialogue options for the entire game.
Because your skill investment influences which perks you can unlock, it’s best to plan your build so that your background, traits, perks, and companions all support a shared goal. For a full list of every skill and its effects, check out our Outer Worlds 2 Skills Guide or the Best Skills Ranked.
Best Perks for the Stealth Build

Ghost, Assassin, and Pickpocket are the best perks for a Stealth build in the Outer Worlds 2.
The Ghost perk makes you invisible for a few seconds when an enemy begins investigating the nearby area, helping you avoid detection even easier.
Assassin doubles your movement speed for five seconds after a kill. This allows you to go from target to target in melee range killing while avoiding detection.
Pickpocket is a fantastic utility perk that helps you gain unique weapons and armor, bits and crafting materials, and especially keycards which can get you into restricted areas.
Below are the best perks for a Stealth build in the Outer Worlds 2:

You earn a perk point every even-numbered level. Unlike the first game, many perks now have specific skill prerequisites, so your character build must be planned with both skill leveling and perk selection in mind.
For a full list of perks and their requirements see our Outer Worlds 2 Perks Guide or browse our Best Perks Ranked guide.
Best Flaws for the Stealth Build

Flaws are optional selections that can make or break your build. For the Stealth build, the best Flaw to take is Bad Knees as this dramatically increases your Crouched (Stealth) movement speed.
The downside to the Bad Knees flaw is that it emits a popping sounds with a radius of 10m that can alert enemies to your presence. The 10m range can be quite large, so we recommend you experiment a bit with this Flaw to see if you like the playstyle before saving your game and committing to it. Still, the 50% movement speed while crouched makes you extremely fast and may be worth it.
In The Outer Worlds 2, the Flaw system returns as a risk–reward mechanic that reacts to your in-game behavior. If you repeatedly perform certain actions, like staring at the sun, you may trigger a Flaw prompt, offering a permanent gameplay trade-off. Once accepted, Flaws cannot be removed, making them a lasting part of your character’s journey.
For a full list of Flaws see our Outer Worlds 2 Flaws Guide or you can check the Best Flaws Ranked Guide.
Best Armor for the Stealth Build

The Best Armor for a Stealth Assassin build in The Outer Worlds 2 is the Patient Step unique Light Armor.
Hibernation Suit and Helmet
The Hibernation Suit and Helmet return to the Outer Worlds 2 from the original game and offer some decent protection and modding capability for an early Stealth Build. Both armor pieces can be found in the lockers on board your ship, the Incognito.

Patient Step Unique Light Armor
The Patient Step unique armor can be found via the Order Of The Ascendant quest line and includes the Precog modification causing movement while in Tactical Time Dilation to no longer drain energy. This is one of the best mods you can get for any build, letting you stay in TTD for longer. Combine this with an additional mod for defense such as Crisis Defenses and you will be set! Check our Patient Step guide for more details.

Boa Skin
For a more stealthy approach to this build you can use the unique Boa Skin Medium Armor. This comes with two powerful mods: Con Man, which gives you temporary health and Undercity Materials which causes enemies to lose awareness of you 50% faster.

Best Weapons for the Stealth Build

The Best Weapons for a Stealth Assassin build in The Outer Worlds 2 are the Murder’s Best Friend unique knife and a Silenced Pistol.
Murder’s Best Friend
The Murder’s Best Friend unique knife is an incredibly powerful weapon for a Stealth Assassin style build. With the Killing Spree mod, this weapon grants a 20% Damage and 20% Crouch Speed bonus after each stealth kill, up to 3 until discovered. At max stacks, your footsteps are also completely silent.
Murder’s Best Friend can be found in an Advanced Lockbox.

Silenced Pistol
If you prefer to do your slayings with a ranged weapon, any Silenced Pistol will do. One of the best options however is a Silenced Plasma Pistol as you can charge this with 3 rounds in the chamber which all fire at essentially the same time. Consider pairing this with the Monocular target finder unique helmet for even more weak point damage!

Triple Barrel Shotgun
Believe it or not, the damage output for this weapon makes it particularly powerful as a stealth weapon. Consider using an extra holster mod so that you can an extra weapon slot when needed for this.
In The Outer Worlds 2, weapons retain the variety and flexibility of the first game while introducing new customization options. Players can choose from melee weapons, handguns, long guns, heavy weapons, and more, each with different damage types like physical, plasma, shock, or corrosion. Enemies will have resistances and weaknesses, so keeping a diverse loadout ensures you’re ready for any encounter. Skills and perks can further boost weapon effectiveness, making your choices in character creation directly influence your combat power.
Unique and Science Weapons return, offering rare and powerful gear often tied to specific quests or hidden locations. Weapon modding has been overhauled, each weapon now has its own dedicated set of mods, allowing you to enhance performance or add unique effects tailored to that weapon. You can equip up to four weapons at a time and swap between them via a quick slot wheel, making it easy to adapt mid-fight. For a full list of weapons, their mods, and where to find them, see our Outer Worlds 2 Weapons Guide.
Best Companions for the Stealth Build

Marisol and Aza are the best companions for the Stealth build because they compliment your stealth playstyle. Marisol is a stealth assassin who plays at range and can lockdown enemies from afar, while also refreshing your gadget energy.
Aza is a great companion because she provides passive bonuses to your Sneak Attack Damage. Moreover, her background and faction support less than law abiding choices for a renegade background. An alternative to either companion is Inez who can heal and supports any playstyle in the game.
Below is our best party composition setup for the Stealth build in the Outer Worlds 2:
- Player — Role: DPS — Light armor, melee and range stealth
- Marisol — Role: Ranged Sniper and Support
- Aza — Role: Melee DPS / Stealth Attack Bonus
- Alternatives: Inez for healing and combat support
Each companion brings a distinct combat role, such as melee tank, ranged DPS, or support. Moreover, each companion has their own personality and backstory. Expect unique abilities, personal quests, and an approval system that reacts to your decisions, influencing dialogue and possibly quest outcomes. For a complete breakdown of all known companions, their abilities, and best gear setups, check out our The Outer Worlds 2 Companions Guide.
Best Gadget for Stealth Build

Auntie’s Acidic Dematerializer is the best gadget for a stealth build because it disintegrates enemy corpses so they can’t be detected by patrols.
For pure melee combat however, Tactical Time Dilation is the way to go. Combined with the Patient Step unique armor listed above you can move with no energy drain while still in Time Dilation, making it extremely easy to set up stealth kills.
Gadgets use a unique energy which can be used in one of four ways. You can swap gadgets anytime you want via the UI Wheel. While there is a primary gadget that we recommend, feel free to swap as you encounter different circumstances where they could be useful. Check out our full guide here, or a summary below:
- Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus: use for high damage situations or hazards
- N-Ray Scanner: look through walls to identify targets before charging into a room
- Auntie’s Acidic Dematerializer: destroy corpses when sneaking around
- Tactical Time Dilation Gadget: helpful when aiming or closing the gap on any build

Best Consumables for the Stealth Build

The best Thrown Item for a Stealth Build in the Outer Worlds 2 is the Distraction Device, followed by the Smoke Grenade. Both of these thrown items will make it easier for you to get around enemies and perform stealth attacks.
In The Outer Worlds 2, consumables provide powerful temporary bonuses that can turn the tide of a fight or help you pass a critical skill check. These items can boost damage, increase defenses, restore health, improve movement speed, or enhance specific skills for dialogue and exploration. Consumables are typically found as loot, purchased from vendors, or crafted using the game’s workbench systems.
How to Play Stealth in the Outer Worlds 2

For a stealth build, you want to avoid detection by crouching and remaining hidden prior to combat engagement. The simplest way to do this is with the N-Ray Gadget. This allows you to see through walls and identify targets before turning a corner or entering a building. Ideally, you want to use this gadget throughout combat, especially in closed-quarters situations.
To maximize your damage, always enter combat in stealth for the bonuses with skills and perks. You can also use Tactical Time Dilation to slow down time to make a snipe headshot easier or moving from target to target in melee range. Also consider using a variety of grenades to create distractions or stun targets when you’ve been detected.
For survival, keep many inhalers on you which is your healing mechanism. Also, don’t be afraid to use consumables to boost your stats, heal, or provide a temporary buff. Most RPG players complete their playthroughs with 99x of everything in their inventory but could have used them during boss encounters.
