Wondering if you need to play the first Outer Worlds to enjoy the sequel? Here’s a spoiler-light breakdown of what you’ll miss and why The Outer Worlds 2 is still beginner-friendly.

The Outer Worlds, released on October 25, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, quickly became a fan-favorite RPG thanks to its witty humor, rich story, and standout characters. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the same studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, the game’s success even led to the studio’s acquisition by Microsoft under Xbox Game Studios.
Now, nearly six years later, The Outer Worlds 2 is set to launch on October 29, 2025. With more resources and the momentum from Obsidian’s recent hit Avowed, the sequel promises a major evolution of the series, introducing new factions, worlds, RPG systems, and expanded build options.
Is The Outer Worlds 2 a Direct Sequel?
The Outer Worlds 2 isn’t a direct sequel, in fact you start out as a new protagonist in the same star system. The new world within the system is Arcadia and you have new factions, companions, and conflict between a variety of parties. The main character is now a Earth Directorate Agent. This role is similar to a space Marshall where you are sent into an area to “clean it up.” However, players are left to their own devices to choose what actions to take or how to solve these problems.
In summary, Outer Worlds 2 is a new experience for players and while some factions and parts of the game might be familiar, you can jump in without prior knowledge of the series.
What You Might Miss from the First The Outer Worlds Game
While not essential to play the first game, you will miss out on the over corporate satire themes. In the Halcyon system, mega corporations, and specifically their board of directors determine how people live their lives. The original Outer World was a bit more light hearted with social commentary towards the evils of Capitalism left unchecked.
Similar to the original game, Outer Worlds 2 gives players to freedom to decide how the system unfolds. You can either side with one faction or more, and this determines your overall gameplay and ending.
Therefore, if you haven’t played the Outer Worlds series before, expect some humor towards mega corporations ruining various worlds with endless greed.
The Outer Worlds 1 Story Recap
In the Outer Worlds, the player awakes from cryosleep as the Stranger on the colonist ship Hope. From here, you are exposed to variety of factions and corporate politics all vying for your support and attention. You get a few binary choices like siding with rebels or corporations, and throughout the game it shapes your overall story narrative. Mainly, each playthrough, with slightly different choices gives the Outer Worlds a unique feel. Will you support or destroy the Board of the Directors? That was the main consequential decision in the first game.
Gameplay Carryover
The Outer Worlds 2 won’t feature save carryover or progression transfer. Therefore, your previous characters, progression, achievements have no impact on gameplay. It seems Obsidian wanted new players to be able to jump into the second game without the burden of playing the original.
You can expect the game to teach you everything about it’s gameplay and combat like Tactical Time Dilation and reputation. Therefore, don’t sweat about playing the original if you’re looking forward to a new RPG in space with heavy emphasis on storytelling and player choice.
