Discover everything new in The Outer Worlds 2 compared to the original game—from setting, story, and factions to new RPG systems, builds, and combat mechanics.

The Outer Worlds 1 was originally released on October 25, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Windows (PC), and Xbox One. The game saw immediate success and favor with RPG fans and critics alike. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the same developers that made Fallout New Vegas, this RPG has a quirky, fun, and interesting cast of characters. The game succeeded and eventually Microsoft under Xbox Game Studios acquired the studio and many more.
And now, Outer Worlds 2 is set to be released this year on October 29, 2025, nearly six years later. With much more resources, and with their recent hit Avowed, the Outer Worlds 2 is shaping up to be a big evolution in the series. In this post, we’ll break down everything that’s changed or improved since The Outer Worlds 1, including new factions, worlds, RPG systems, and build opportunities.
Overview of What’s New in The Outer Worlds 2
Below are the major changes from Outer Worlds 1 to Outer Worlds 2 you can expect on release:
- Entirely new star system (Arcadia) and player origin.
- Sharper, more tactical FPS-style combat with enhanced movement.
- Deep specialization with 90+ perks and 12 skills.
- No respec system – playstyle commitment matters.
- Bigger, more reactive factions and narrative consequences.
- Immersive sim level design – lots of ways to solve problems.
- Expanded tools and gadgets including wild science weapons.
- More builds, more roleplay variety, and richer exploration.
Setting & Story Changes
The Outer Worlds 2 story will feature a new protagonist story line and setting. You’ll be traveling to Arcadia, an independent colony fractured by Skip Drive rifts and factional drama. The main character will no longer be the Stranger, instead an Earth Directorate Agent. The developers have described this role as a Space Cowboy or Marshall sent in to clean up a job.
While the original Outer Worlds had a more silly tone, you can expect a much darker experience in the story. You’ll still experience the funny jokes and humor, but the stakes are much larger and more serious in nature. The theme of this game is Space Western meets cosmic horror, or as co-director Leonard Boyarsky described it “robber barons in space.”
New Worlds and Exploration
Since you are traveling to a new part of the universe in Arcadia, you can expect a much more diverse set of terrain and world building. The game features worlds owned by various factions like the Protectorate, Auntie’s Choice, and Order of the Ascendant. Each have a different tone, environment, and theme. The worlds are now packed with various ways to solve problems and quest, giving the player the same level of agency Obsidian is known for. In comparison to the Outer Worlds 1, the overall theme seems much more dark instead of bright vibrant purple and pink color motif.
Combat, Movement & Tools

A lot of attention has been given to combat in Outer Worlds 2. The original game just didn’t have the fluid combat, especially gunplay, of a modern title. Now you can expect an overhauled gunplay gameplay experience with better recoil, sound, and aim. Outer Worlds 2 will play much more like a FPS shooter rather than an RPG with guns.
Mobility will feel similar to Avowed which will now have sprint-sliding, parkour traversal, double-jumping, and vertical combat. Players can access new tools like cloaking enemies, stealth scanners, levitating science grenades, and distraction gadgets. Moreover, throwables have been expanded to now include Frag grenades, smoke bombs, and science explosives.
Lastly, the Tactical Time Dilation will still return to the game, but it feels better, smoother, and synergizes with various perks to give an overall build potential.
RPG System Overhaul
The biggest changes to Outer Worlds 2 also include its RPG systems such as skills, traits, flaws, and perks. Here’s what we know so far:
Skills

The game now feature 12 distinct skills which will add to build variety. There are many more variables like perk in the game compared to the original Outer Worlds, so expect to have more control over your playstyle.
Perks

Similar to Fallout 4 or Fallout New Vegas, Outer Worlds 2 goes deep into Perks with over 90! You can find some like:
- Run-and-Gun – Fire while sliding or sprinting.
- Space Ranger – Mix speech bonuses and combat buffs.
- Psychopath – Boosts damage and healing via kills.
These perks, combined with your skills gives each and every player a unique build rather than only a few choices. Avowed, Obsidian’s recent title expand on their previous RPG systems and it seems the studio is getting better at player build progression.
Traits & Flaws

Returning to the Outer Worlds 2 is the flaw and trait system. Essentially, you get a positive trait in exchange for a negative trait. Some of these can be critical for build performance while others are for comic relief and making the game feel more unique. Take for instance bad knees which makes a pop after you stand up from stealth alerting everyone nearby of your presence. These traits will shape dialogue and gameplay options and are critical for your overall fun factor.
No Respec After Tutorial
One major point of controversy is no respec after the tutorial. It seems like the developers want your character creation choices to stick and not be easily changed. While this is great for immersion, it can be a huge turn off to players who want to experiement or are disappointed in their original changes. Therefore, be extremely careful on your selections, or just reroll new characters! We’ll be posting a lot of build guides soon, so check those as well for more guidance on character builds!
Companions

The Outer Worlds 2 features six new unique companions with their own factions and personal questlines. You won’t be seeing any returning companions, so expect a totally different experience as before. And just like the Outer Worlds 1, companions aid you in and outside of combat.
Visual Style & World Feel

One major visual change is the third person view. This was added to Avowed and likely put into Outer Worlds 2 development. No more being locked into first person view in Outer Worlds 2, but you can still access it at any time.
Final Thoughts
The Outer Worlds 2 feels like a true next-gen sequel. If you loved the blend of RPG storytelling, build experimentation, and dark humor in the original, you’ll find even more freedom—and challenge—in Arcadia.
