One-shot, one-kill is the motto of the ultimate Operative Sniper build in Warhammer 40,000 – this guide walks you through step-by-step how to create the most powerful ranged build in the game.

The Operative Sniper/Assassin picks the single enemy who decides the fight, strips away its cover and dodge, then removes it with one guaranteed critical hit. Bosses, healers, enemy Psykers, and commanders die on the turn you choose. Everything else is cleanup.
This guide covers the meta setup end to end. It leads with the two hardest decisions in Rogue Trader, character creation and level progression, then walks the combat engine, weapons, and party composition. Every choice is stamped for the current patch.
Updated for Patch 1.6.1 (Sixth Gargantuan Update) and The Infinite Museion expansion.

Rogue Trader Sniper Build Character Creation
Character creation is where a Rogue Trader build lives or dies. Home World and Origin lock in features you cannot respec later, so get them right the first time.
Home World: Forge World

Forge World is the meta pick. It grants an augmentation, and the Analytics System option raises Critical Hit chance based on your Intelligence bonus. Intelligence is this build’s primary stat, so the crit bonus scales with everything else you invest in. After 1.6, Forge World also plugs into the new Sector Bionica augmentation system from The Infinite Museion, which stacks a second layer of implant scaling later in the game.
Fortress World is the aggressive alternative. Its Never Stop Shooting feature grants a stacking bonus on every kill that eventually hands you free attacks. On a build that deletes a target every turn, that snowball is real. Take it if you want kill-chaining over crit scaling. The other Home Worlds are fine for roleplay, but they do not push this build’s numbers.
Origin: Crime Lord

Crime Lord is the best Origin pick for the Sniper build. Its Sure-Fire Plan feature gives you charges equal to your Intelligence bonus, and each charge buffs your next action: more damage, lower defense on a target you analyzed, or dodge when you move. It also carries a Perception bonus that helps strip enemy dodge, and its defense debuff stacks on top of your Exploits for layered penetration against hard targets.
Astra Militarum Commander is the support-leaning alternative. It boosts Ballistic Skill and Perception and grants Regimental Tactics, which rewards you for finishing enemies engaged with your allies. Take it if you want a more team-oriented shooter. Crime Lord also grants a Weapon Skill bonus, which only matters if you run the melee Assassin variant covered later.
Characteristics

The trick that makes each shot hit for 500 or more is the Exploit stack, and Exploits scales off Intelligence. Analyse Enemy applies one Exploit to every enemy in your line of sight each turn, plus a bonus batch to your main target equal to one plus half your Intelligence bonus. Every Exploit adds 10 percent to the damage that target takes. Intelligence also fuels your Sure-Fire Plan charges and, after 1.6, your grenades. That is why it comes first.
| Characteristic | Target | Priority |
| Intelligence | 45 | Primary |
| Agility | 40 | Secondary |
| Ballistic Skill | 40 | Tertiary (hit and damage) |
| Perception | 35 | Strips enemy dodge |
| Toughness | 35 | Survival |
| Weapon Skill | 35 | Melee variant only |
| Strength | 30 | Dump |
| Willpower | 30 | Dump |
| Fellowship | 25 | Dump |
Note: Spend characteristic points in increments of 5; bonuses read off the tens digit. Keep two stats tall rather than nine even. If you want a purer long-range sniper who never gets touched, you can flatten Agility and push Perception and Ballistic Skill higher for raw accuracy and crit. The Intelligence-forward spread above is the higher-ceiling meta version, because it maximizes the Exploit multiplier and the reworked grenades.
Starting Skills
Prioritize these as you spend skill points:
- Awareness: spotting hidden enemies and traps, and staying a step ahead in the initiative game.
- Lore (Xenos): knowledge checks that reward an Intelligence build across the campaign.
- Demolition: after 1.6 it scales your reworked grenades, so it is worth real points on this build.
The Archetype Path

The best archtype progression for the Sniper build is Operative into Assassin, capped by the Exemplar.
- Tier 1, level 1: Operative. The precision specialist. Its identity is finding a target’s weak point and punishing it.
- Tier 2, level 16: Assassin. It unlocks from Warrior, Operative, or Bladedancer, so Operative opens it naturally. The Assassin turns your Exploit setup into guaranteed, scaling burst.
- Tier 3, level 36: Exemplar. It deepens and fuses your Tier 1 and Tier 2 picks. By level 36 your stat spread and talent choices already decide its shape.
Note: Pick Operative at creation specifically so Assassin is available at level 16. Operative also unlocks Bounty Hunter, the main rival Tier 2, which the comparison section covers.
How the Sniper Build Works
Three moving parts build a guaranteed kill for the Sniper build. The Operative half loads the target; the Assassin half cashes it in.
- Analyse Enemy (Operative). Stacks Exploits on your target, each adding 10 percent damage taken. Weak-point exploits add roughly 5 percent per point of Perception bonus on top. Spend the opening rounds stacking on your priority target. After 1.6 this keeps firing on bonus turns.
- Seek the Opening (Assassin keystone). Reveals one opening on a side of each enemy. Hit that opening to deal an extra 10 percent of the target’s max wounds. After you attack, the opening rotates to the opposite side.
- Tide of Excellence (Operative talent). Stacks more Exploits and pushes your own damage and penetration. This is the standout pickup for the Assassin sub-path.
- The finishers. Killing Edge scales damage up with the target’s missing wounds. Death Whisper applies haemorrhage that ignores armor, ticks every turn, and does not eat your attack limit. Feinting Attack strips enemy armor penetration. Poised to Strike carves armor and deflection while topping up your dodge.
- Dispatch (Assassin heroic act). Cannot miss. Adds 50 percent damage plus a quarter of the target’s missing wounds, and doubles your dodge, armor penetration, and parry reduction. Save the Desperate Measures version for the kill that ends the fight, since it leaves you taking double damage.
The loop is: analyze to stack the multiplier, read the opening, fire the finisher. One priority target dies per turn, and the longer the fight runs the more lopsided it gets in your favor.

Sniper Build Weapons and Gear
- Core: Sniper Rifle. Highest single-shot damage, the crit profile the kit amplifies, and the range to stay untouched at the back of the formation.
- Backup: Longlas or Stub Revolver. Single-shot value for a cheaper action when you do not need the full rifle shot.
- Grenades. After 1.6 they scale off Intelligence and can crit, so carry a few as a real second damage source and an answer to enemies behind cover.
- Early game. The Sworn Protector sniper rifle carries Act 1 with extra armor penetration. Aeldari and Drukhari sniper rifles are best in slot later; pick up the relevant weapon proficiency if you can.
- Gear priority. Ballistic Skill, Perception, Intelligence, then Critical Hit chance, Critical damage, and armor penetration.
Party Synergy and Best Party Composition
The Officer is the engine behind the engine. An Officer heroic action hands you a full extra turn. After 1.6, your Analyse Enemy and Aim for the Opening keep firing on that bonus turn, so a double-turn loads your multiplier twice and fires twice. This is the single most important pairing in the guide.
- Joint Analysis lets you share Exploits, so a second analyzer compounds the stacks faster.
- A frontline anchor (a Warrior or a tanky Vanguard) holds the line while you sit at range. You are fragile; you win by never being reached.
- A second shooter, ideally Yrliet, gives you two priority-target deletions per round.
- A support caster or second Officer keeps the double-turns flowing.
Sample party: your Operative/Assassin sniper, an Officer for double-turns, a frontline anchor, Yrliet as a second sniper, and a flex support or Psyker.
Companion Version: Yrliet and Pasqal
Yrliet joins in Chapter 2 as an Aeldari Ranger, locked into the Operative archetype. Her Operative talents are fixed, but you choose her Tier 2. Take Assassin and you have the textbook execution with almost no setup. Spec Perception and Ballistic Skill high, keep her at the back, analyze every round, and let her delete priority targets. With the free 1.6 respec you can convert her tonight.
Pasqal is the utility alternative. He is a Tech-Priest locked into Operative, and after 1.6 his Forge World origin hooks into the Sector Bionica system. He trades raw single-target ceiling for tech skills, hacking, and support. Run him as a second Operative when you want utility over pure burst; keep Yrliet as the dedicated sniper.
What Patch 1.6 Changed for This Build
Before 1.6, the Operative read as the weakest Tier 1 archetype and the Assassin sat mid-pack. The debuff kit was strong; the payoff broke inside the exact parties that win the game. The Sixth Gargantuan Update fixed both halves on purpose. It released on June 11, 2026 alongside The Infinite Museion.
- The key fix: Analyse Enemy and the Assassin keystone Aim for the Opening now keep working during additional and interrupt turns. An Officer double-turn no longer wastes your setup; it doubles it.
- Talent scaling: many Operative talents received better scaling, including Tide of Excellence, Fresh Target, and Ballistics Calculation.
- Grenades reworked: they now count as area attacks, can crit, and scale off Intelligence and Demolition. An Intelligence-heavy build picks this up for free.
- Free respec: the patch shipped a free party-wide respec. You can rebuild an existing captain or Yrliet into this line at no cost.
Rogue Trader Sniper Build FAQ
1. Is the Operative good after 1.6?
Yes. The patch specifically buffed it from the weakest Tier 1 archetype into a competitive one, and its keystone now works during the extra turns that drive the meta.
2. What is the best Home World?
Forge World for crit scaling off Intelligence. Fortress World if you want the Never Stop Shooting kill-chain instead.
3. What is the best characteristic?
Intelligence. Your Exploit stacks and your grenades both scale off it.
4. Protagonist or Yrliet?
Either. Yrliet is ready-made from Chapter 2; a protagonist gives you full control of every point from level 1.
5. How does it hold up on Hard or Unfair?
Pair with an Officer for double-turns. The burst is exactly what makes those difficulties manageable, because you remove the enemy who would have swung the fight.
