This guide covers everything you need to run the best Melee build in the game: the skills to unlock first, the weapons to craft at each power level, the armor sets and their exact crafting recipes, the utility spells and consumables that make the build even better, and a full progression path that walks you from the standard stone club in the starting area to the Abyssal Whip and Dragon tier gear in the endgame.
Quick Summary: The Runescape Dragonwilds Melee build focuses on close-range combat, parrying, and blocking through the Attack skill tree. The three priority skills are Parry at level 5, Tempest Shield at level 11, and Weapon Expertise at level 16. The three milestone weapons are the Bone Club for early game, the Skullsplitter for mid game, and the Abyssal Whip for endgame. The three armor tiers to work through are the Reinforced set, the Steel set, and the Black Knight set from Dowdun Reach.

Runescape: Dragonwilds Melee Build Overview
The Melee Build in Runescape: Dragonwilds is as strong as it is simple. You fight at close range with one-handed or two-handed weapons, use a shield for its block stat and set bonuses when running one-handed melee weapons, and rely on Tempest Shield and Parry to handle the high-damage situations in melee range.
What sets the Melee build apart from the Ranged and Magic combat styles is the depth of its defensive toolkit. Ranged builds rely entirely on maintaining distance and dodging. Magic builds rely on crowd control and timing. The Melee build has blocking, parrying, Tempest Shield, a full armor set bonus line, and the option to swap a magic headpiece in specifically for boss fights to reduce stamina recharge delay. No other combat style in the game has this many defensive options.
Best for: New players, solo endgame content, dungeon and vault clearing, boss fights.
Playstyle: Aggressive close-range combat with defensive parry and block layered over the top.
Melee Build Pros and Cons
Pros
The melee armor set bonuses, specifically the 50% critical chance after blocking and 25 bonus damage to staggered targets, reward exactly the kind of play the build is made for. Parrying in the 1.0 update now restores 50% of your maximum stamina on a successful parry, making the stamina cost of aggressive melee play even better. The Abyssal Whip is the best endgame weapon in the game for sustained boss damage due to its bleed buildup mechanic, which stacks without requiring critical hits and works against every boss type including the Garou King and Kuldra. Melee builds work well both solo and in group content because the tank role in co-op is naturally built for this combat style.
Cons
The melee build requires you to take hits. Unlike Ranged and Magic builds that can clear content from a distance, melee weapons put you in the middle of every fight. This means enemy attacks land more often, durability drops faster on your melee armor, and fights against groups of enemies are more punishing than they are for builds that can pick off targets before they close distance. The build also requires runes to maintain its best active skills: Tempest Shield costs 15 Air Runes per cast, Enchant Weapon: Fire costs 15 Fire Runes and 5 Astral Runes, and maintaining a Rune Altar with enough stock to cover both consistently requires regular Runecrafting sessions.
Best Melee Build Skills
The Attack skill tree levels by performing specific actions: fighting with melee weapons generates Attack XP per hit. The faster way to level is to always fight with your melee weapons rather than switching to ranged weapons for convenience, and to seek out tougher enemies as soon as your gear allows rather than grinding easier content.
Parry (Attack Level 5)
Parry attacks by blocking at the last moment of an enemy’s attack animation. A successful parry causes a stagger on the attacker and deals increased damage in the follow-up window. As of the 1.0 update, a successful parry also restores 50% of your maximum stamina, making the stamina cost of aggressive combat significantly more manageable. Parry is not a passive ability: it requires precise timing. But it arrives at level 5, early enough that you can practice it from the first few hours of the game before enemies become threatening enough to punish mistimed attempts.

Melee Weapon Special Actions (Attack Level 8)
Unlocks unique special actions for all melee weapons. Each weapon type has its own unique special action: the Two-Handed Sword delivers a crowd-control swing, and the Abyssal Whip’s special action is the Abyssal Snare, a slow homing projectile that explodes for 30 base damage on all enemies it hits. These unique special actions are separate from the standard combo chain and provide burst damage options that the regular melee attacks cannot match.

Tempest Shield (Attack Level 11)
Summons an Air Magic shield that prevents all incoming damage while blocking for a limited time, then triggers a powerful burst when the spell ends, damaging nearby enemies. Costs 15 Air Runes per cast. The duration of Tempest Shield increases with each Attack level, and its base cooldown is 45 seconds following the 1.0 update. Tempest Shield is the single most important skill in the entire melee build and the reason reaching Attack level 11 as fast as possible is the build’s first priority without exception.

Weapon Expertise (Attack Level 16)
Unlocks additional attacks at the end of every melee weapon combo, permanently increasing the number of hits per chain without increasing stamina cost proportionally. Weapon Expertise is a passive ability that applies to every melee weapon you equip from that point forward, making it one of the best permanent damage upgrades in the build. The increased damage output from longer combos also means faster Advantage generation and more frequent opportunities for landing critical hits.

Enchant Weapon: Fire (Attack Level 20)
Enchants your current melee weapon with fire, applying Burning to enemies when landing critical hits. Costs 15 Fire Runes and 5 Astral Runes. The enchant weapon duration is now 5 minutes following the 1.0 update, making it worth recasting at the start of every significant fight rather than saving it for specific moments. Enchant Weapon: Air at level 30 follows as the next upgrade priority, increasing your melee weapon’s attack speed at the cost of the same rune types. Both enchantments apply to your current melee weapon regardless of type.

Adaptability (Attack Level 23)
A passive ability that ensures evading or blocking no longer interrupts your combos when using melee weapons. Without Adaptability, taking evasive action mid-combo resets your attack chain to the beginning. With it, you can dodge an incoming attack and continue your combo from where you left off, which substantially increases sustained damage output in fights that require frequent repositioning.

Whetstone (Attack Level 40)
Unlocks the crafting recipe for Whetstones at the crafting table, which are used to sharpen melee weapons for increased damage. Crafted using 5 Granite and 10 Stone, a Whetstone provides a flat damage boost to your current melee weapon that stacks on top of Enchant Weapon bonuses. Use them before boss encounters and vault clears where the additional damage compounds across many hits.

Best Utility Skills and Spells
Beyond the Attack skill tree, several skills from other trees significantly improve the Melee build’s combat performance and survivability.
Windstep (Agility Level 5)
Summons Air Magic to jump higher and descend slower. At higher levels, landing creates an air blast that knocks down nearby enemies. For melee builds, the combat application of Windstep is especially valuable: repositioning above enemies removes you from their melee range temporarily, and the landing knockdown can reset a fight that was going badly by giving you a moment to reposition before enemies recover.

Double Jump (Agility Level 10)
Performs a second jump mid-air, chainable into an Air Dash. Reaching Agility level 10 should happen in parallel with Attack skill leveling during the early game because the movement improvement it provides benefits melee builds more than any other style. Getting into and out of melee range quickly is the skill that separates smooth melee combat from constant attrition.

Surge (Magic Level 11)
Enhances dodges to travel further and last longer. Surge is one of the few Magic skills that benefits every combat style equally, and for melee builds specifically, better dodge distance means bigger gaps between you and incoming damage when you need them. The stamina cost of Surge is low enough to be a regular part of the melee combat rotation rather than an emergency button.

Rocksplosion (Mining Level 11)
Conjures a blast to break all ore and stone within its radius simultaneously. Listed here because melee armor is the most material-intensive build in runescape dragonwilds, requiring large quantities of metal bars and leather across multiple crafting tiers. Rocksplosion makes those gathering runs fast enough to keep your gear upgrades ahead of the content you are pushing.

Best Melee Weapons
Early Game: Bone Club (Power Level 2)

How to Craft: Use 8x Animal Bone, 6x Ash Logs, and 4x Leather at the Crafting Table.
Stat | Value |
|---|---|
Power Level | 2 |
Damage Type | Crush |
Base Damage | 26 to 46 |
Damage Multiplier | 1.9 |
Block | 16.5 |
Attack Combo | 5 hits |
Durability | 850 |
The standard stone club is your starting weapon but it should also be replaced as soon as you have enough animal bone and ash logs to craft the Bone Club. The Bone Club’s base damage range of 26 to 46 per swing is a big step up from the stone club and its 5-hit attack combo establishes the melee rhythm you will be using throughout the game. Collect animal bone from any animal you encounter early: chickens, rabbits, and deer all drop it reliably. Prioritize crafting the Bone Club over upgrading anything else during the first hour of the game.
Mid Game: Skullsplitter (Power Level 3)

How to Craft: Use 6x Bronze Bar, 4x Antler, 4x Oak Logs, and 2x Hard Leather at the Smithing Anvil. Unlock the recipe by acquiring the Remnants of a Shattered Skull from defeating a Garou Berserker.
Stat | Value |
|---|---|
Power Level | 3 |
Damage Type | Crush |
Base Damage | 38 to 67 |
Block | 19.5 |
Critical Hit Bonus | +15% Critical Chance |
Attack Combo | 5 hits |
Durability | 1,050 |
The Skullsplitter is the best mid-game one-handed melee weapon available to a melee build in runescape dragonwilds. Its 15% increased critical hit chance is the highest crit bonus at Power Level 3 and synergizes directly with the melee armor set’s +50% critical chance after blocking bonus, creating windows where landing critical hits becomes highly reliable. Crafting it requires a Smithing Anvil which you should have built at your base by this point, plus Bronze Bars smelted from Copper and Tin ore gathered in Brynmoor and the Whispering Swamp.
Endgame: Abyssal Whip (Power Level 4)

How to Craft: Use 1x Abyssal Spine, 12x Hard Leather, 12x Swamp Thread, 6x Poison Ichor, 12x Vault Shard, and 1x Vault Core at the Smithing Anvil. Unlock the Abyssal Whip crafting recipe by bringing the Abyssal Spine to the Dragonkin Effigy at the Kletterbuja Kara vault.
Stat | Value |
|---|---|
Power Level | 4 |
Damage Type | Slash |
Base Damage | 50 to 87 |
Block | 5 |
Attack Combo | 5 hits |
Special Action | Abyssal Snare: homing projectile, 30 base damage |
Durability | 1,300 |
The Abyssal Whip is the best melee weapon in Runescape Dragonwilds for sustained boss damage. Its bleed buildup mechanic stacks with every hit and applies increasing damage over time without requiring critical hits or specific conditions, making it uniquely effective against high-health bosses like the Garou King and Kuldra where a sustained fight plays out over many seconds. The abyssal snare special action adds ranged burst to a melee weapon, letting you hit enemies before they close distance or punish enemies who retreat.
To get the abyssal spine needed for the Abyssal Whip crafting recipe, defeat Abyssal creatures in the higher-difficulty vault areas in Ghornfell and Fellhollow. The Dragonkin Effigy that unlocks the crafting recipe is located at the Kletterbuja Kara vault, and visiting it with the abyssal spine in your inventory is the trigger that converts the material into a craftable recipe.
Note: The 1.0 update changed the Abyssal Whip progression. An intermediate version called the Abysmal Whip at Power Level 4 is now craftable as a stepping stone. The Masterwork Abyssal Whip at Power Level 7 requires a recipe found in the Umbral Sands and represents the highest-tier version of the weapon available at 1.0 launch.
Secondary Weapons
No Melee build should carry only melee weapons. The combat triangle means some enemies significantly resist melee attacks, and having Ranged weapons and Magic weapons in reserve for those situations is essential. The Crystal Bow at Power Level 4 is the recommended secondary weapon for most melee builds: its per shot damage is competitive, it hits hard at range, and its special attack does not require arrows, making it low-maintenance alongside a primary melee loadout.
The Crystal Bow’s consistent per shot damage output also makes it the most reliable way to deal with flying or fast-moving enemies that stay out of reach of one handed weapons and two handed weapons alike. For Magic weapons, keep a staff at your current power level as a third option for groups of enemies that resist both melee attacks and ranged weapons.
Best Melee Armor
Most melee armor sets share the same set bonuses regardless of tier: -33% block stamina cost with 1 piece equipped, +50% critical chance after blocking with 2 pieces equipped, and +25 damage to staggered targets with 3 pieces equipped. These bonuses reward the parry and block playstyle that the Melee build does well with, and maintaining the 3-piece set bonus should be the goal for every fight.
Early Game: Reinforced Armor Set (Power Level 2)
The Reinforced set is the first melee armor available in Runescape Dragonwilds and is crafted entirely from materials gathered in the starting area.
Piece | Crafting Materials | Melee Def | Ranged Def | Magic Def |
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() Reinforced Helmet | 4x Animal Bone, 2x Leather at Crafting Table | 6 | 4 | 3 |
![]() Reinforced Body | 10x Animal Bone, 8x Leather at Crafting Table | 14 | 9 | 8 |
![]() Reinforced Legs | 8x Animal Bone, 6x Leather at Crafting Table | 9 | 6 | 5 |
Craft the full Reinforced set before leaving the starting area. The individual defense values are modest, but the 3-piece set bonus delivers immediate value even on Power Level 2 armor: the block stamina cost reduction makes early blocking viable, and the crit chance after blocking starts feeding into your damage output as soon as you are landing parries.
Mid Game: Steel Armor Set (Power Level 5)
The Steel set is the Fellhollow region armor and a huget defense upgrade over anything available in Ghornfell. It requires Steel Bars smelted from Iron Ore and Coal at the Blast Furnace, along with Draconic Leather from mid-game creatures and Sacred Oil.
Piece | Crafting Materials | Melee Def | Ranged Def | Magic Def |
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() Steel Full Helm | 4x Steel Bar, 4x Draconic Leather, 1x Fine Cloth, 1x Sacred Oil, 2x Vault Shard at Smithing Anvil | 15 | 13 | 12 |
![]() Steel Platebody | 10x Steel Bar, 6x Draconic Leather, 4x Fine Cloth, 3x Sacred Oil, 1x Vault Shard at Smithing Anvil | 38 | 32 | 30 |
![]() Steel Platelegs | 6x Steel Bar, 4x Draconic Leather, 3x Fine Cloth, 2x Sacred Oil, 4x Vault Shard at Smithing Anvil | 23 | 19 | 18 |
The Steel set’s melee defense values represent a significant step up from the Ghornfell-tier options, and its Vault Shard requirements mean you should be completing vault runs in the Fellhollow region as part of your normal progression anyway. Sacred Oil is crafted from plant materials found in Fellhollow and is the primary new material gate for the Steel tier.
Pre-Endgame: Black Knight Armor Set (Power Level 6)
The Black Knight set is the pre-Scorned Wilderness endgame armor and the best craftable melee armor in Runescape Dragonwilds before the 1.0 Rune and Dragon tier gear. It is unlocked by purchasing and using the Grim Black Codpiece vestige from the Evil Emporium shop in Dowdun Reach, which makes the Black Knight crafting recipes available.
Piece | Crafting Materials | Melee Def | Ranged Def | Magic Def |
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() Black Knight Helmet | 4x Black Metal Bar, 2x Mithril Bar, 4x Cursed Leather, 1x Mystic Cloth, 1x Demonic Oil at Smithing Anvil | 18 | 15 | 15 |
![]() Black Knight Platebody | 10x Black Metal Bar, 2x Mithril Bar, 6x Cursed Leather, 4x Mystic Cloth, 3x Demonic Oil at Smithing Anvil | 45 | 39 | 38 |
![]() Black Knight Platelegs | 6x Black Metal Bar, 2x Mithril Bar, 4x Cursed Leather, 2x Mystic Cloth, 2x Demonic Oil at Smithing Anvil | 27 | 24 | 23 |
The Black Knight Platebody’s 45 melee defense is the highest value of any craftable chest armor in the game before the 1.0 endgame tiers. Black Metal Bars come from Black Metal Ore found in Dowdun Reach, and Cursed Leather is processed from Cursed Hide dropped by the region’s cursed enemy types. The Mystic Cloth requirement means overlapping with Magic build materials in Dowdun Reach, which makes this region’s resource farming particularly efficient if you are gathering for multiple pieces simultaneously.
Pro Tip: For boss fights specifically where you cannot reliably parry the attack pattern, swap the Black Knight Helmet for a magic headpiece. The magic headpiece removes the 3-piece set bonus but adds a -50% stamina recharge delay, which means your stamina recovers twice as fast between dodges. Against bosses that cannot be parried and where you need to dodge constantly, the stamina recovery advantage outweighs the crit bonus from the full set.
1.0 Endgame: Rune Armor (Power Level 8) and Dragon Armor (Powe Level 9)
Rune armor drops from the Scorned Wilderness region introduced in the 1.0 update. Dragon armor, including the Dragon Full Helm, Dragon Platebody, and Dragon Platelegs, drops from successful Scorned Wilderness runs after defeating Kuldra the God-Eater. These represent the highest available melee armor tier at 1.0 launch and require progression through the Regicide main quest to access.
| Piece | Crafting Materials | Melee Def | Ranged Def | Magic Def |
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() Rune Helm | 4x Rune Bar, 4x Black Dragon Leather, 1x Vis Cloth, 1x Harmonised Compound, 1x Draconic Vis Wax | 24 | 22 | 21 |
![]() Rune Platebody | 10x Rune Bar, 8x Black Dragon Leather, 3x Vis Cloth, 3x Harmonised Compound, 3x Draconic Vis Wax | 60 | 54 | 53 |
![]() Rune Platelegs | 6x Rune Bar, 6x Black Dragon Leather, 2x Vis Cloth, 2x Harmonised Compound, 2x Draconic Vis Wax | 36 | 33 | 32 |
The Rune Platebody’s 60 melee defense is the highest of any craftable chest piece in the game at 1.0 launch. Rune Bars are smelted from Runite Ore gathered in the Scorned Wilderness, and Harmonised Compound is crafted in the Kiln from Scorned Wilderness materials.
Dragon armor pieces, including the Dragon Full Helm, Dragon Platebody, and Dragon Platelegs, drop from successful Scorned Wilderness runs after defeating Kuldra the God-Eater and represent the highest available melee armor tier overall. Dragon armor is uncraftable and drops exclusively from the Queenslayer’s Reward Pack earned after defeating Kuldra. None of the Dragon armor pieces degrade.
| Piece | How to Get | Melee Def | Ranged Def | Magic Def |
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() Dragon Full Helm | Queenslayer’s Reward Pack (drop, uncraftable) | 27 | 25 | 24 |
![]() Dragon Platebody | Queenslayer’s Reward Pack (drop, uncraftable) | 68 | 62 | 60 |
![]() Dragon Platelegs | Queenslayer’s Reward Pack (drop, uncraftable) | 41 | 37 | 36 |
The Dragon Platebody’s 68 melee defense is the highest of any armor piece in the game at 1.0 launch. Because Dragon armor is uncraftable and does not degrade, every piece is a permanent upgrade that does not need to be replaced or repaired.
Best Consumables
Lesser Potion of Attack
Unlocked at Attack level 34 and crafted using 1x Snapdragon, 1x Ground Granite, and 1x Clay Vessel at the Brewing Cauldron, the Lesser Potion of Attack grants a 25% increased chance of landing critical hits with melee attacks for 10 minutes. Combined with the melee armor set bonus of +50% critical chance after blocking, the Lesser Potion of Attack turns otherwise standard exchanges into reliable critical hit windows that compound with Enchant Weapon: Fire’s Burning application.
Whetstone
Unlocked at Attack level 40. Crafted using 5x Granite and 10x Stone at the Crafting Table. Whetstones sharpen melee weapons for increased damage output and are applied before boss encounters or vault clears where the additional damage compounds across many hits. Maintain a stack of at least five before pushing into new content.
Air Runes and Fire Runes
Maintaining a stock of Air Runes for Tempest Shield casts and Fire Runes for Enchant Weapon: Fire is a non-negotiable part of melee build management. Craft these at your Rune Altar regularly. A minimum supply of 50 Air Runes and 30 Fire Runes before any boss encounter or vault run is a reasonable baseline.

Melee Build Food and Drink
You can have 1 Food buff and 1 Drink buff active at the same time, so be sure to use both for more challenging encounters. For pure combat scenarios we recommend the Sauteed Sardines food and Ferocious Infusion beverage.
Sauteed Sardines – Food
Sea Life: Increases Hit Point regeneration.
Made by combining fried sardine and dried redbery. +70 Health, 600s duration.
Requirements: 1 Friend Sardine, 1 Dried Redberries
Ferocious Infusion – Drink
Ferocious Fighter: Reduces the Stamina cost of Physical Attacks by 33%.
A hydrating drink infused with primal fury.
Requirements: 1 Clean Water, 1 Animal Bone, 1 Harralander
Melee Build Progression
Phase 1: Starting Area (Power Level 1-2)
Your starting weapon is the standard stone club, which is immediately replaced as your first crafting priority. Gather 8 Animal Bone, 6 Ash Logs, and 4 Leather from the starting area and craft the Bone Club at the Crafting Table. Build a basic shelter with walls and a roof for the Rested buff. Craft the Reinforced armor set from Animal Bone and Leather before moving on.
Priority skills during Phase 1: Parry at Attack level 5, Windstep at Agility level 5, and Double Jump at Agility level 10. These three together give you the melee build’s foundational toolkit before the game’s difficulty rises meaningfully. Do not push into Brynmoor until you have Parry unlocked.
Phase 2: Brynmoor (Power Level 2-3)
Brynmoor introduces Garou enemies and tougher animal types. Craft Bronze weapons at the Smithing Anvil, hunt a Garou Berserker for the Remnants of a Shattered Skull to unlock the Skullsplitter recipe, and reach Attack level 11 for Tempest Shield before pushing deeper into the region. The Skullsplitter at Power Level 3 with its 15% increased critical hit chance paired with the Reinforced armor set bonuses creates a reliable damage pattern for clearing Brynmoor content.
Phase 3: Ghornfell (Power Level 4 Fractured Plains and Bloodblight Swamp)
Ghornfell is where the melee build truly comes online. Iron tier weapons and armor become available, vault runs begin yielding vault shards for crafting, and the Abyssal Whip becomes accessible through the Kletterbuja Kara vault and the Dragonkin Effigy. Reach Attack level 16 for Weapon Expertise during this phase to extend your combo chains. The abyssal spine needed for the abyssal whip crafting recipe drops from Abyssal creatures in the region’s vault areas.
Phase 4: Fellhollow (Power Level 5)
Fellhollow introduces Steel tier gear and the materials to upgrade your armor set significantly. Craft the Steel armor set as the immediate priority on arriving in the region. Reach Attack level 20 for Enchant Weapon: Fire and maintain a Fire Rune supply at your Rune Altar. The Masterwork Abysmal Whip (the intermediate Abyssal Whip variant introduced in 1.0) is available by this point and provides a Power Level 4 upgrade to your primary weapon.
Phase 5: Dowdun Reach (Power Level 6)
Dowdun Reach brings the Black Knight armor set and the Evil Emporium where the Grim Black Codpiece vestige is purchased to unlock the crafting recipes. Purchase the vestige immediately on arriving in the region, gather Black Metal Ore and Mithril from Dowdun Reach deposits, and craft the full Black Knight set before engaging the region’s tougher enemies. Reach Attack level 23 for Adaptability to prevent dodge cancelling your combos.
Phase 6: Umbral Sands (Power Level 7)
The Umbral Sands is the current endgame region at 1.0 launch. The Masterwork Abyssal Whip recipe is found here, upgrading the Abyssal Whip to Power Level 7. Adamant armor and weapons become craftable from Adamantite Ore mined in the region. Reach Attack level 40 for the Whetstone recipe and maintain a supply before attempting the Scorned Wilderness raid.
Phase 7: Scorned Wilderness (Endgame)
The Scorned Wilderness is accessed through the Regicide main quest. Complete it at Adamant or Masterwork Abyssal Whip tier before attempting the raid. Kuldra the God-Eater guarantees a Dragon Kiteshield drop on the first kill. Subsequent successful runs drop Dragon armor pieces. Rune tier armor is also available from Scorned Wilderness content, sitting above Black Knight in defense values.

How to Play the Melee Build
The melee build’s combat loop is built around three phases: Approach, Engage, and Recover.
Approach: Close distance on the enemy using Double Jump and Windstep to reach targets quickly and from unexpected angles. Use the landing knockdown from a high Windstep to open the fight with the enemy staggered before your first swing lands.
Engage: Begin your attack combo and watch for the enemy’s wind-up animation. At the last moment of an incoming attack, activate your block to trigger a Parry if the timing is right, or hold block for a standard block if you are not confident in the timing. A successful parry restores 50% of your stamina, stuns the enemy, and opens a Visceral Attack follow-up that deals increased damage. One handed weapons with a shield give you the best block stat here, which is why they are the preferred choice for learning enemy patterns over two handed weapons that strip the block stat entirely. Use Tempest Shield proactively when multiple enemies are attacking simultaneously or when the block stat on your Abyssal Whip or other melee weapons is not sufficient to handle incoming damage. Switch to ranged weapons between phases of a fight when the enemy retreats out of melee range rather than chasing and wasting stamina.
Recover: After clearing an enemy or when low on health, create distance using Surge-enhanced dodges and Windstep to buy time for health and stamina recovery. Eat food to restore health. A Whetstone already applied to your melee weapon and a Lesser Potion of Attack active means finishing a fight efficiently is usually faster than disengaging.
Against bosses specifically: apply your Enchant Weapon buff before the fight begins. Pop a Lesser Potion of Attack. Enter with Tempest Shield off cooldown so it is available for the first big attack. Focus on learning the boss’s one or two telegraphed big attacks, parry those specifically rather than trying to parry everything, and use Tempest Shield for anything that comes too fast to parry comfortably.
The Final Word
The Melee build is the most mechanically rewarding combat style in Runescape Dragonwilds once its parry system and upgrades click. The feeling of landing a well-timed parry, watching the enemy stagger, triggering a Visceral Attack, and rolling into the next exchange with your stamina restored makes the build enjoyable from Power Level 2 through the Scorned Wilderness. Prioritize Attack level 11 for Tempest Shield above everything else, build your melee armor set at each tier to maintain the set bonuses, and upgrade to the Abyssal Whip as soon as you have access to the Dragonkin Effigy in Ghornfell.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds Melee Build FAQ
1. What is the best melee weapon in Runescape Dragonwilds?
The Abyssal Whip is the best endgame melee weapon for sustained boss damage due to its bleed buildup mechanic. At Power Level 7 the Masterwork Abyssal Whip is the top melee weapon overall, and the Adamant Mace at Power Level 7 is the best option for one-handed melee weapons where you want to maintain a high block stat alongside a shield.
2. How do you unlock the Abyssal Whip?
Bring the Abyssal Spine to the Dragonkin Effigy at the Kletterbuja Kara vault to unlock the abyssal whip crafting recipe. Then craft it at the Smithing Anvil using 1x Abyssal Spine, 12x Hard Leather, 12x Swamp Thread, 6x Poison Ichor, 12x Vault Shard, and 1x Vault Core.
3. What are the melee armor set bonuses in Dragonwilds?
All three melee armor tiers share the same set bonuses: -33% block stamina cost with 1 piece equipped, +50% critical chance after blocking with 2 pieces equipped, and +25 damage to staggered targets with 3 pieces equipped.
4. Is two-handed or one-handed better for the melee build?
One-handed melee weapons paired with a shield are more defensively reliable and benefit fully from the set bonuses, particularly the +50% critical chance after blocking. Two-handed weapons deal more damage per hit but remove your block stat entirely, leaving you dependent on Tempest Shield and dodges alone for defense. One-handed is better for most situations, with two-handed being viable once you have strong parry timing and Tempest Shield well-practiced.
5. What skills should I prioritize first for a melee build?
Parry at Attack level 5, Tempest Shield at Attack level 11, and Weapon Expertise at Attack level 16 are the three priority Attack skills. Outside the Attack tree, Windstep at Agility level 5 and Double Jump at Agility level 10 are the highest-value early unlocks for the melee build’s movement and combat approach.
6. Can I use a bow or staff combat style with the Melee build?
Melee beats ranged enemies but struggles against magic-type enemies. Carry ranged weapons for enemies that resist melee attacks (magic-type enemies) and magic weapons for enemies that resist ranged attacks. The Crystal Bow is the recommended secondary weapon for melee builds because its per shot damage is competitive and its special attack does not require arrows.
