Here’s our complete Solasta 2 Commander Fighter build guide using the Solasta 1 Commander subclass (ported into Solasta 2 Early Access) with step-by-step guidance on assembling your build.

The Commander Fighter returns to Solasta 2 with the updated ruleset from DnD 5e 2024. This build transitions from a simple “shouting” buff-bot to a battlefield leader that leverages the new Weapon Mastery systems. Players who love inspiring others, providing buffs, and still dishing out damage will love the Commander Subclass for the Fighter.
With access to Second Wind and Action Surge at early levels, you are a self-sufficient powerhouse capable of wrecking and supporting an entire team. Pick this subclass and style if you want to add some support to your party or want a unique Fighter experience that can’t be found in DnD.
Note: Some names and values reflect Solasta 2 Early Access conventions and 2024 SRD structure. Where Solasta 2 may later tweak values, the logic and priorities of the build remain valid. If you are familiar with Baldur’s Gate 3 combat, Solasta 2 will play similarly but differently with an updated rules (2024) system. Therefore, don’t expect an exact experience from that previous game.

Why Use the Commander Fighter Build in Early Access
The Commander bridges the gap between a Paladin’s support and a Fighter’s sustained damage. With the 2024 updates, Action Surge and Second Wind are more flexible, and the Commander’s unique abilities (Rousing Shout) now provide Heroic Inspiration. Moreover, the Rousing Shout ability uses a bonus action, so you’ll always be able to use both action and bonus action each turn.
In the early game, from levels 1-4, spellcasters and other complex builds can suffer. They need more levels to multiclass, obtain higher spells, or gear. Not the Fighter! You get the best of both worlds, providing buffs and utility while dealing damage and having a simple playstyle.
This build will use the Fighter as a front-line melee tank, that can deal damage, and aid allies.

Class
The Fighter is the backbone martial class with high durability, multiple attacks, and broad weapon & armor access. As a Fighter, you gain:
- d10 Hit Dice (excellent early HP)
- Strength & Constitution saving throws (solid defensive profile)
- Access to Fighting Styles, Second Wind, and Action Surge
Saving Throws
The Fighter’s Saving Throws are Strength and Constitution.
- Strength – helps resist push/slip effects and maintain positioning.
- Constitution – boosts concentration checks (if multiclassed or using items later) and helps HP endurance.
Armor & Weapon Proficiencies
Fighters have access to the most Armor and Weapon Proficiencies:
- Armor: Light, Medium, Heavy
- Shields: Yes
- Weapons: Simple and Martial
This means great flexibility in defense and offense, choose the armor and weapon set that suits your party role.
Subclass

Unlocked at Fighter Level 3, Commander emphasizes party support and battlefield leadership. Below is what you unlock with the Commander Subclass and its features:
- Gruff Authority (Lv3): Gain proficiency in two skills: athletics, intimidation, investigation, insight, perception, persuasion, or survival. Additionally, whenever you make a charisma Intimidation or persuasion check, you gain a bonus to the check equal to your strength modifier.
- Rousing Shout (Lv3): you can use a bonus action to give yourself and friendly creatures within 30 feet of you advantage on their next attack until the start of your next turn. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your CON modifier (minimum of one) and it’s replenished on a short rest.
The Rousing Shout bonus is perfect when combined with a melee dual wielding Rogue. The Rogue needs advantage to trigger extra damage via Sneak Attack, and likely will be in 30 feet range. Moreover, it’s great for your damage as well since the bonus applies to you or anyone in the 30 feet range.
The Commander subclass is unique to Solasta II and is not in the DnD 2024 subclass list. All subclasses in Solasta II are unlocked at level 3, standardizing early progression across classes. Subclass features typically define your combat role, resource usage, and additional effects, actions, or spells.
Best Ancestry (Race / Species)
The Human Species and Ancestry is the best for the Commander Fighter Build in Solasta 2 because you get an extra Origin Feat, another skill proficiency, and Heroic Inspiration bonus. This gives you even more combat power, utility, and ensures the theme of your build fits. Below is what you unlock with the Human choice:
- Versatile (Extra Feat): Take Robust for extra health, as your background will give you Savage Attacker (most important). If you select a different background, take Savage Attacker with this extra bonus.
- Resourceful (Heroic Inspiration): You gain Heroic Inspiration every time you finish a Long Rest. This allows you to reroll any die (Attack, Save, or Check).
- Versatile: You gain proficiency in one extra skill of your choice (Athletics for exploring).
Human’s have a downside which is no Darkvision. Therefore, make sure you get the Light Cantrip or have a Lantern on you at all times for a source of light in dark places. A secondary Ancestry choice would be the Dwarf. You’d sacrifice an extra origin feat but gain more health and Darkvision. If you do, make sure you get the Wanderer background to unlock Savage Attacker Origin Feat as it’s important to maximizing melee damage.
Ancestry in Solasta 2 provides passive bonuses, traits, and sometimes unique movement or sensory advantages. Under the 2024 SRD, ability score increases are no longer locked to ancestry, making race selection more about utility, survivability, and synergy rather than raw stats.
Background
Wanderer is the best background for the Commander Fighter because it unlocks Savage Attacker Origin Feat and it allows you to increase Strength and Constitution. Below is what you unlock with the Wanderer background:
- Description: You were found by villagers and brought to the Colwall orphanage at a very young age.
- Improved Ability Score: STR, DEX, CON.
- Skills: Animal Handling, Survival.
- Recommended Personality: Outlaw
- Origin Feat: Savage Attacker – Once per turn when you hit with a weapon, you can reroll the damage dice and use the higher total.
- Mastered Tool: Herbalism Kit.
- Equipment: A Letter from Rickard.
An alternative background would be Lawkeeper, which also increases Strength and Constitution. However, it gives the Vigilant origin feat which is weaker. The reason you would select this background is for the “Ruler” recommended personality. That might fit your characters narrative better, without sacrificing a great deal of combat performance.
If you do deviate from our suggested background, it’s critical that you select Savage Attacker with your Human Versatile bonus.
Backgrounds in the Solasta II provide skill proficiencies, ability score improvements, and your Origin Feat. Rather than being purely narrative, backgrounds now play a direct role in mechanical identity. The three scores listed above indicate which ability scores can be improved. You can do one +1 and another +2.
Origin Feat
Savage Attacker is the best Origin Feat for the Commander Fighter because it allows you to reroll weapon damage dice once per turn, using the higher result. This gives you consistent per-turn damage, making it an excellent choice in early access.
An alternative choice for a tank build is Robust, which helps increase health.
Origin Feats are a cornerstone of the 2024 ruleset and are granted through your background. These feats provide early mechanical identity and often influence how a build plays from level 1 onward.
Skills
The Commander unique benefits from Persuasion and Intimidation skills with Gruff Authority unlocked at level 3. Therefore, make sure to keep your Charisma score high, and unlock these both at the start of the game, or at level 3 when you get two more skill proficiencies. Below are your skill priorities:
By following this path, your character will start with 5 Trained Skills:
- Intimidation – CHA based selected via Fighter in character creation.
- Charisma – CHA based selection you can unlock at level 3.
- Athletics – STR based selected via Fighter in character creation.
- Perception – WIS based selected via Human extra bonus.
- Insight – WIS based selection you can unlock at level 3.
Skills determine your effectiveness outside of direct combat, including dialogue, exploration, and environmental interaction. Most builds should focus on a small number of key skills rather than spreading proficiency too thin.
A key upgrade for the Fighter in the 2024 rules is the Tactical Mind feature (Level 2). If you fail an Ability Check (like a failed Athletics jump or a missed Perception roll), you can spend a use of your Second Wind to roll a 1d10 and add it to the result. Tactical Mind ensures that when it really matters, you can use your Fighter’s skill to pass checks you would otherwise fail.
Ability Scores
| Ability | Score | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 16 (+2) | Your primary attack stat and determines Save DCs for Masteries. |
| Dexterity | 10 | Initiative & leave at 10 use Heavy Armor. |
| Constitution | 16 (+1) | High HP is vital to keep your leadership aura active. |
| Intelligence | 8 | Dump stat |
| Wisdom | 10 | Helps with Perception and Insight checks. |
| Charisma | 14 | Commander benefits from high Charisma and skills. |
The most important ability score for the Commander Fighter is Strength which scales your primary attack and Save DC. Your secondary stat is Constitution which determines HP and leadership aura. For this build, you can drop Dexterity and Wisdom for more Constitution if you lack survivability. However, you will have lower initiative and weaker skills if you do so.
Additionally, consider Charisma an important ability score. You gain proficiency and both Persuasion and Intimidation, plus a bonus based on your strength modifier. This will make speech checks much easier to pass, and leans into the Commander theme.
Stat Priority (Quick Reference)
- Strength– Accuracy, damage
- Constitution – Survival and consistency
- Charisma – Helps with speech checks and dialogue
- Wisdom – Awareness and control resistance
- Dexterity – AC (medium), initiative
- Everything else is non-essential
Ability scores in Solasta 2 determine nearly every core mechanic: attack accuracy, damage, spell effectiveness, defenses, and skill success. Under the 2024 ruleset, your primary stat directly fuels your class’s core actions, while secondary stats improve survivability and utility. Also, remember, Backgrounds now provide your Ability Score Increases (ASI). You no longer get them from your Ancestry (Race).
Weapon Mastery Selection

The Fighter picks three Weapon Masteries at character creation. This determines small on hit bonuses your weapons produce. You want to focus on the one hand and shield playstyle, with an extra pick in case you need to stun. Below are our suggestions:
- Longsword (Sap): imposes disadvantage debuff against an enemy. You start with this weapon type and it’s helpful to debuff enemies while still hitting hard in melee.
- Longbow (Slow): lowers movement speed of enemy hit. Great starting to use at range when you cannot reach a target.
- Maul / Battleaxe (Topple): a secondary two-handed weapon choice with Topple. This can stun enemies if they fail a CON saving throw. Great if you want more crowd control.
Weapon Mastery is a new 2024 feature for martial classes (Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue). It unlocks a unique “Mastery Property” on specific weapons. These effects can add control, extra damage, or tactical advantages beyond basic attacks.
Commander Fighter Build Level Progression 1-4 (Early Access)
| Level | Choice |
|---|---|
| 1 | Defense Fighting Style |
| 2 | Action Surge |
| 3 | Subclass: Commander |
| 4 | Feat: ASI +2 Strength |
This section explains what changes at each level and how your build’s role evolves as new features unlock.
- Level 1: Core class features (e.g., Rage, Spellcasting, Weapon Mastery).
- Level 2: Tactical upgrades (e.g., Cunning Action, Combat Styles).
- Level 3: Subclass Choice. This is where the build “comes online.”
- Level 4: General Feat. Choose a feat that grants +1 to your Primary Stat or Ability Score Improvement (ASI)
Level 1
Fighting Style: Take Defense fighting style here for a +1 Armor Class Bonus. If you’re playing with a fellow Rogue who’s always attacking your target, Protection is a good choice. It uses a reaction to impose Disadvantage on an enemy attacking an ally). Lastly, Great Weapon Fighting is the choice if you want more damage and sacrifice the shield.
Second Wind: Now has multiple charges and can be used for Tactical Mind (1d10 to skill checks).
Level 2
Action Surge: On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and possible bonus action. Use this to attack with melee weapon and Action Surge to attack again or use another action like cast a spell on Aether Warden. This recharges on Short Rest, so make sure to rest up prior to another fight.
Tactical Mind: spend an action and expend a second wind to activate Tactical Mind for 1 Minute. You add a bonus 1d10 whenever you make an ability check. It acts as a “clutch moment” for non-combat skill checks. Ideally, use this outside of combat when approaching a situations or likely dialogue.
Level 3
Subclass Unlock: Commander.
Take Persuasion or Intimidation skill if you do not have it proficient yet. Also, start using your bonus action every turn for Rousing Shout to gain advantage and give another ally like a Rogue advantage.
Level 4
The easiest decision here is taking +2 Strength with Ability Score Increase. Most of the other feats aren’t as effective, and this keeps the build simple and strong.
Commander Fighter Build Future Scaling & Level 5–10 Roadmap
This roadmap outlines how the Commander Fighter build transitions from early stability into mid-game power:
- Level 5 (Extra Attack): Allows you to use Coordinated Defense and still make one attack yourself.
- Level 7 (Subclass Upgrade): You gain 3 uses of Rousing Shout and can add your STR/CON to all saving throws, significantly increasing your survivability against spells.
- Level 10 (Aura Expansion): Rousing Shout and Coordinated Defense range increases to 12 cells.
While Early Access may cap progression at level 4, strong builds are planned with future scaling in mind. Level 5 is a major breakpoint in the 2024 ruleset, often granting massive power spikes. The developers will continue to add levels throughout the EA process.
Commander Fighter Build Multiclass Options & Synergies

We don’t recommend multiclassing the Commander Fighter in this phase of Early Access. That’s because you need two levels of Paladin or Rogue to make it worth it. If you do that, you’ll lose the Subclass bonuses which unlock at level 3. However, once more levels are added during development, here are two options:
- Paladin (2 Levels): For Divine Smite. While Smite is once-per-turn in Solasta 2, the Commander’s guaranteed Advantage from Rousing Shout makes crits much more likely.
- Rogue (2 Levels): Specifically for Cunning Action to reposition the “Commander’s Aura” without provoking opportunity attacks.
In Solasta 2, you can multiclass your builds. Multiclassing requires a 13 in the primary stat of both classes. Because subclasses start at Level 3, “dipping” is less common for subclass features but remains strong for Level 1 proficiencies or Weapon Masteries.

Best Party Composition & Companion Synergy
In Solasta 2, your party consist of four pre-made characters. The best party to complement your Fighter is the following:
- Spellcaster DPS: the Sorcerer with Metamagic, Mana Painter build is the best DPS. You stack Charisma and have great AOE, single target, and survivability. The Wizard is another good choice due to a larger spellbook, but less action economy.
- Support: The Life Cleric is your choice here for healing with good action economy. Plus Guiding Bolt gives them great damage early.
- Utility: The Scavenger Rogue is the simplest and effective way to play the Rogue and helps do high DEX task like sneak, stealth, picklocks, and detect traps.
Ideally, you don’t want another melee DPS Paladin or tank with your team. If you do, sacrifice the support Cleric and use a Paladin who can off-heal, but not to the same degree as a Cleric.
