Starfield Melee Build Overview
The melee builds in Starfield uses melee weapons like knives, and samurai swords for damage. Melee builds and unarmed builds are different, taking different skill points, but both are effective. What’s great about the melee build is the lack of ammunition required for damage. Simply get a good weapon, and start hacking and slashing for huge damage without the need for constant credits and buying ammo. Furthermore, the final bonus in dueling grants 10% health on kill, keeping you aggressive and in the fighter.
The major downsides to the Melee build is a slower start because you need a lot of oxygen for speed and other skills like Boost Pack Training for higher mobility. As you progress in levels, you become faster, harder to kill, with better stealth. Plus, with no ammo, you can spend all your credits upgrading your armor and weapons for best and slot. Below are some pros and cons for the melee build, followed by specific choices and leveling progression. Check out our Starfield Builds video guide for even more tips and gameplay!

How to Play a Starfield Melee Build
There are some unique mechanics to keep in mind when playing a Melee build in Starfield. First and foremost is the difference between a basic attack, power attack, and a block. A basic attack is performed by pressing your trigger/attack key.

To perform a power attack press the bash button/key. This does more damage but takes more time to perform. This is also typically the attack you’ll want to use from stealth to get the highest amount of damage output to one-shot enemies.

To block using your melee weapon press and hold the same button/key you would use to aim with a ranged weapon.

Outside of these three-core mechanics, it’s also important to remember when playing a Melee build in Starfield the principles of resource management are key. Oxygen is your lifeblood, without it, you cannot attack, or deal damage and will thus likely fall quickly in combat. Additionally having high health and enough aid supplies to handle the amount of lead, lasers, and lacerations you’re going to eat getting that up close and personal is paramount.
Third and most important is the element of surprise, I.E stealth. This ensures you are getting into melee range as quickly as possible while also dealing the highest amount of damage possible. Hit enemies hard and fast at close range then regroup if needed against multiple enemies.
Melee builds in Starfield rely mainly on Physical skills as opposed to Tech or Science Skills. As our main focus is on Melee weapons we don’t typically employ the Boxing skill for this build. If you prefer that route be sure to check out our Unarmed Build for Starfield.
Best Melee Build Background

The Ronin background provides not only a viable opportunity for a subtle, stealth melee build in Starfield but quite undisputedly is the best bang for your buck damage-wise for any melee build. It does so by providing one free rank in the Dueling, Stealth, and Scavenging skills.
The Dueling skill will provide us with the damage bonus and damage reduction we want to have a viable melee character.
Stealth will provide us with the ability to unlock the stealth meter along with a 25% sneak bonus, and a 5% sneak attack damage bonus at rank 1. Ranking up the Dueling and Stealth skills will unleash the deadly assassin that is the Ronin, layering the damage bonuses from Dueling and sneak attack bonuses from Stealth you can very easily one-shot most enemies at the start of the game.
The Scavenging skill synchronizes well with the stealth build so that you are getting more loot and credits from containers as you skulk about a facility, dispatching the spacers, pirates, or mercs as you cut through them with your preferred blade.
Best Melee Build Traits
The best traits for a melee build in Starfield are Alien DNA, Terra Firma, and Introvert. Alien DNA increases your oxygen, Terra Firma also boost oxygen, while Introvert is great playing solo without companions. Below are the additional details and now in Starfield, you can remove traits if they aren’t wanted after character creation.
1. Alien DNA

Will grant you increased health and oxygen but at the cost of your healing and food items have reduced effectiveness. Don’t worry about this as we will offset this by investing in the Medicine skill. The benefits from having the increased health and especially oxygen are too good to pass up for this one slash melee monster.
2. Terra Firma

Will give us a fantastic damage and oxygen bonus while we are on a planets surface which is realistically where we are going to be doing much of our slashing and slaying in the game.
3. Introvert

Lastly taking Introvert will give us a significant boost to Oxygen when adventuring alone which as a true stealth ninja we will be doing exclusively. Especially since effectively stealthing with Companions in Starfield can be very glitchy, unreliable, and frustrating. This will also stack and synergize with the Isolation skill later in the build.
Best Melee Build Weapons in Starfield

During early to mid-game you’re going to want to use a Wakizashi or Tanto as your primary weapon because they have high damage and a wide arc that makes the hitbox more reliable than other melee weapons of the same caliber.
One of the best Melee weapons that you can get right at the start of the game is the Syndicate Enforcer Katana found in the Seokguh Syndicate hideout within Frankies Grab’n Go located in Ebbside on Neon. Be sure to check out the video below for more information on how to obtain it.
We suggest using it for the majority of your playthrough until the late game and NG+ levels where grabbing a Va’Ruun Painblade will get you higher damage, penetration, and more desirable weapon traits such as those shown below.

Best Weapon Traits
The best melee weapon traits are:
- Rapid: +25% increase in attack speed.
- Instigating: Deals double damage to targets with full health.
- Lacerate/Radioactive: Any weapon trait that deals additional damage to a target or demoralizes them is a plus.
Melee Space Suit and Helmet Options
The best armor you can grab for yourself in the game will be the Reactive Mantis set (spacesuit, power pack, and helmet). If you’re willing to put in a little bit of time to grab the Mantis set, it can yield some stellar equipment traits that will take your melee build to the next level. (remember to save your game before opening the armor display case and keep reloading until you get your desired gear).

When rolling for Mantis armor traits look for the 3 following traits
Acrobat: -50% fall damage.
O2 Boosted: +20% Oxygen capacity.
Reactive: 10% chance to stagger nearby attackers.
Recommended Boost Pack

We recommend using a Skip Boost Pack in order to quickly dart from one enemy to another on the battlefield or to quickly break your fall after a crazy jump with your gymnastics skill. It also allows you to hover across the surface of a planet and get from one point of cover to another when overwhelmed in a fight so that you can quickly stealth and heal up before sneak attacking from the shadows on your next victim.
Best Melee Build Skills

The best skills for the Melee Build in Starfield are Martial Arts, Dueling, Fitness, and Wellness.
- Stealth: Most importantly this skill unlocks the stealth meter for us and makes us increasingly more difficult to detect when sneaking. It also grants us increasing amounts of sneak attack damage per rank invested. Stealth is in the Physical Tree at Tier 1.
- Fitness: Another Tier 1 skill from the Physical Tree, Fitness increases our overall Oxygen capacity which is vital to increasing the amount of power attacks and attacks in general we can perform, which translates into our overall DPS output.
- Wellness: Increases our maximum health which is very important for a melee build as we will be soaking up all of the bullets when adventuring alone and engaging in close-quarters combat. The more the better. This is a Tier 1 Physical Tree skill.
- Gymnastics: An incredible Tier 2 skill from the Physical Tree that will elevate this build by granting greater battlefield mobility is Gymnastics. Only one skill point is needed to unlock combat sliding which is another handy way to get into combat.
- Martial Arts: One of the most powerful physical skills in Starfield, this core skill increases our chance to crit with a melee attack, gives us a chance to disarm an opponent, takes significantly less damage while wielding a melee weapon, and at max rank 4 allows us to reflect a staggering 50% damage when blocking a melee or unarmed attack.
- Concealment: Our capstone skill in the Physical Tree is Concealment, a Tier 4 master skill that tremendously boosts our sneak attack damage, increases our ability to stealth effectively by granting us a cool cloaking effect, and makes us utterly invisible to traps.
- Dueling: One of the most important combat skills you can get which synergizes amazingly with Martial Arts, and at maximum rank 4 our kills will grant us a heal equal to 10% of our total health. An absolute must.
- Medicine: Offsets the negative effect of taking Alien DNA by granting us the ability to make Med Packs, Trauma Packs, and Emergency Kits work faster and restore more health. This will be a crucial skill in the early game and low levels for keeping us in the fight and alive. Medicine is located in Tier 1 of the Science skills.
- Boost Pack Training: One of the best tech skills in Starfield, Boost Pack Training unlocks the ability for us to use Boost Packs.
- Scavenging: Another great free pick-up from the Ronin background, this Tier 1 skill from the Social Tree allows us to simply get better and more lucrative amounts of loot from containers scattered throughout the game. It’s important we max this skill out to get us to the next Tier 2 skill in the Social Tree.
- Isolation: This Tier 2 skill located in the Social Tree will grant us significant amounts of damage resistance and bonus damage for each spacesuit and helmet equipped when we do not have a companion, which with this build is always. This skill layers as the perfect cherry on top of the above skills to send our damage output into the stars.

| 49 | Weapon Engineering | 2 | More powerful upgrades. |
| 50 | Weapon Engineering | 3 | Even more powerful upgrades. |
Best Consumables and Chems for Melee

Your goal with consumables is to increase oxygen, movement, and damage. Below are the best chems and consumables for a melee build in Starfield:
| Item | Effect | Why it’s great for Melee |
| CQB-X | +25% Melee Damage (5m) | Straight damage buff for close-quarters fighting. |
| Frostwolf | +50% Stealth / +50% Movement Speed | You become a blur on the battlefield and stay undetected longer. |
| Red Trench | +50% Melee Damage (3m) | The “boss killer” chem. Use this when you need to drop a high-level Elite instantly. |
| Amp | +35% Movement Speed / 2x Jump Height | Use this constantly. It helps you close the gap before enemies can even aim their weapons. |
| Heart+ | +20% HP / +200 Damage Resistance | Vital for the “berserker” moments when you’re caught out in the open. |
| Alien Genetic Material | +500 Resistance / +500 Energy Resistance | Found on high-level fauna. It turns you into a tank for a full 30 seconds. |
| Personal Atmosphere | (Power) Regenerates O2 | While technically a power, it functions as a “consumable” for infinite power attacks. |
Best Starborn Powers for Melee

For a melee build, you want powers that either immobilize the enemy or grant you total control over the flow of time and space. Here are the best Starborn Powers for this build, ranked best to worst:
- Phased Time: It slows everyone else to a crawl while you move at normal speed. You can walk through a room and decapitate five enemies before the first one even hits the floor.
- Void Form: It grants near-perfect invisibility, allowing you to walk right up to a target for that 10x sneak attack multiplier from your Concealment skill.
- Gravity Dash: The “gap closer.” It launches you forward and grants a temporary damage buff. This is your primary way to engage snipers or turrets across a large room.
- Reactive Shield: Since you aren’t using a gun, you will get shot at. This shield reflects projectiles back at attackers, allowing you to charge head-first into gunfire while taking minimal damage.
- Anti-Gravity Field: If you find yourself surrounded, this lifts every enemy in the area into the air, leaving them flailing and defenseless for easy pickings.
- Sense Star Stuff: Crucial for the Ronin. It highlights all living beings (even through walls), so you never walk into a room and get surprised by an enemy with a shotgun.
