This Starfield Sniper Build is a testament to finesse, strategy, and lethal precision, inflicting devastating damage while you also remain undetected. This guide explains all the skills, best armor, best weapons, best backgrounds and more to create a truly OP Sniper Build in Starfield.

This guide is updated for Starfield Free Lanes and Terran Armada DLC (1.16.236).
Starfield Sniper Build Overview
The Sniper build in Starfield blends high powered ranged weapons with stealth to give you the most damage possible. One-shot, one-kill is the premise here, to kill enemies before they even see you. While skills and weapon damage scaling, this won’t be a problem for most players who have good aim and can reliably hit headshots.
The weakness of the Sniper build is the precision aim requirements and its weak in close quarters battles. This means, you will need a medium to close range weapon to compliment your long distance combat style when forced into a close encounter on a ship or a building. However, with Starborn powers, this won’t be a problem and below we list some pros and cons to consider with this build. Check out our Starfield Builds video guide for even more tips and gameplay!

How to Play as a Sniper in Starfield

The most important thing to keep in mind when playing a sniper in Starfield might surprise you: its Oxygen.
Oxygen allows you to hold your breath while looking down a scoped weapon. This steadies your aim, increasing your accuracy and damage incredibly. The more oxygen you have, the longer you can hold your breath and the more quality shots you can send down range at your enemies, taking them down before they even have a chance to notice you. This leads into the two other core principles of a sniper build in Starfield: stealth and distance.
You’ll want to maintain as much distance from your target as possible while still remaining within effective firing range. Ensuring you have some cover and verticality (top of tower, building or hill/cliff) is also key. This allows you the time and space to gun an adversary down before they have a chance to close the gap and return fire or engage in melee with you. Obi-Wan’s wisdom about the high ground rings true here in Starfield for Snipers as well.
Having good distance also makes it harder for enemies to immediately spot you while you are stealth crouched. While stealthing and with various ranks in the Stealth skill the damage you deal with sneak attacks magnifies your total damage output tremendously so you will want to make sure you are undetected before each and every encounter so you are dealing the absolute most amount of damage to the highest priority target before “going loud” and getting discovered. This approach allows skilled players the ability to punch far above their level weight and take on some high-level content at low levels when built and executed correctly.
Best Sniper Starting Background

Backgrounds in Starfield provide your build with three starting skills, helping to give you a quick start in the right direction. When planning your Sniper build the best background is the Soldier background.
This background provides us with 1 rank in the Fitness, Ballistics, and Boost Pack Training skills at level 1.
Fitness gives us an increased percentage of Oxygen, Starfield’s equivalent to stamina. Oxygen is used for running, jumping, and more importantly, for holding your breath to steady your shots while aiming down the sights of a scoped weapon. The more Oxygen you have the more accurate and thus deadly your opening volley is going to be.
Ballistics is an absolute must-have skill that increases damage done with ALL ballistic weapons, whether that be pistols, shotguns, minigun, semi-auto, sniper rifle, and more. Obviously, this will increase the rifle damage of most on most of the best sniper weapons in the game.
Boost Pack Training is the prime bonus of this background that will give you a jetpack option from day 1, granting us verticality, dynamic movement, and an escape when in combat but more importantly a means of getting to higher ground very quickly which is imperative to a sniper.
The Soldier dialogue options also really fit into a more traditional military Sniper character from a roleplaying perspective, especially during either the UC Vanguard or Freestar Rangers storylines.
Additional background options that will be helpful include the Beast Hunter and Cyber Runner background.
Best Traits for a Sniper Build
Alien DNA, Terra Firma, and Introvert are the best traits for the sniper build because they increase your oxygen, health. Below are the explanation for each:
1. Alien DNA

Alien DNA will grant you increased health and oxygen but your healing and food items are not as effective. Don’t worry about this as we will offset this by investing in the Medicine skill. The benefits from having the increased health and especially oxygen are too good to pass up as a sniper.
2. Terra Firma

Terra Firma will give us a damage and oxygen bonus while we are on a planet’s surface which is realistically where we are going to be doing the vast majority of our sniping in the game.
3. Introvert

Lastly, taking Introvert will give us a significant boost to Oxygen when adventuring alone which as a true sniper we will be doing exclusively.
These three traits combine to give our character a tremendous amount of Oxygen with some added damage/health buffs straight out of the gate at level 1.
Best Weapons for a Sniper in Starfield

The two best weapons for a Sniper build in Starfield are Hard Target (mid game) and Magsniper (late game). Distance and high-damage delivery are key to running an effective Sniper build in Starfield. For this reason, we recommend using Ballistic rifles with lower rates of fire and higher physical damage to accomplish the one-shot kills we’re looking for.
During early gameplay, grab yourself an Old World Hunting Rifle or a Hard Target to kick off your sniping adventure. As you progress you’ll then want to grab yourself the best sniper rifle in the game: the Magsniper Rifle, which deals the highest amount of damage with the highest accuracy.

Another premier sniper rifle to have is an AA-99 Rifle with a scope and semi-automatic mod equipped for when enemies close in and things get spicy. Finally, you should consider picking up the Hard Target rifle as this does quite a bit of damage as well but can be pricey.
Best Sniper Weapon Traits
Be on the lookout for weapons with the following traits:
Anti-Personnel: bonus damage against humans.
Instigating: Deals double damage to targets with full health.
Corrosive: Randomly deals corrosive damage and reduces the targets’ armor over 6 seconds.
Furious: Each consecutive hit deals more damage.
Sniper Space Suit and Helmet Options
The best suit sniper builds can use will be either the UC Marine or Mantis sets (spacesuit, power pack, and helmet). If you’re willing to put in a little bit of time to grab the Mantis set, it can yield some stellar equipment traits that will take your sniper build to the next level. Remember to save your game before opening the armor display case and keep reloading until you get your desired gear.
The Best Mantis Armor Traits

When rolling for Mantis armor traits look for the 3 following traits
Chameleon: Blend with the environment while sneaking and not moving.
Headhunter: Deals +25% damage on the next attack after hitting a target’s head.
Sentinel: Reduces damage taken while standing still.
Best Sniper Boost Pack

We recommend the Power Boost Pack to get the most amount of vertical distance to get to the top of terrain or buildings for prime sniping position or to make a quick escape when closed in on by enemies by putting as much distance as possible between you and your enemies. This will allow you to reset and reposition before sending more rounds down range.
Best Skills for A Sniper Build

The best skills you’ll need for your Sniper build in Starfield come from the combat skill tree, so be sure to spend plenty of points there. If you plan to focus on a starfield stealth sniper build, you’ll also want to invest heavily in the physical skill tree to improve your overall abilities.

Ballistics: The ballistics skill increases damage dealt and range with all Ballistic Weapons and core to the start of the Sniper build. Since most of the best sniper rifles in Starfield are Ballistic weapons, this skill is a no-brainer. It is found in the Combat Tree.

Stealth: Another core skill to a sniper build, Stealth grants you the following benefits: unlocking Stealth Meter, makes you more difficult to detect, additional sneak attack damage, doors you interact with while in stealth no longer alert enemies. It is located in the Physical Tree.

Wellness: Will give us a much needed boost to our overall health for some of the more deadly encounters we will face when fighting enemies who are much higher level than us. This skill is in the Physical Tree.

Fitness: As mentioned throughout this article, Oxygen is the golden resource to a sniper in starfield. A few ranks in the Fitness skill combined with our character trait choices at level 1 will ensure we have a character that will have a ridiculous set of lungs to ensure we are able to lay down a full barrage of sniper fire into an enemy boss without having to even worry about our oxygen. This skill is located in the Physical Tree.

Isolation: This skill synergizes perfectly with our sniper build both mechanically and thematically. As we already took the Introvert trait and we adventure alone as a sniper taking ranks in the Isolation skill will tremendously boost our damage output and damage resistance when we are not traveling with a companion. You can find this skill in the Social Tree.

Rifle Certification: The next combat-based skill we want to pick up as it increases all damage dealt with Rifles as well as provides us at rank 4 with a 30% boost to our reloading speed while we are standing still, which as a sniper we should be while attacking. Its located in the Combat Tree.

Marksmanship: Moving into Tier 3 this skill will significantly increase our critical chance with non-automatic ranged weapons providing a damage boost to non-scoped weapons and a nice knockdown effect for scoped weapons. You can find it in the Combat Tree.

Sniper Certification: Another Tier 3 Combat skill, this will make us even more effective and deadly with scoped weapons. This skill takes the build to the OP level as it makes our scoped weapons steadier, able to hold our breath even longer, +25% crit chance, and an absurd +50% bonus damage. This skill is an absolute must!

Sharpshooting: Tier 4 Combat Tree skill that will start turning our character into a Legolas level deadeye of destruction on the battlefield. It increases the critical damage done by all your ranged weapons with damage spikes particularly being granted on head and leg shots. Also after a critical hit kills an enemy you get a 20 second buff that increases all your ranged weapon damage by 25%. With the other skills mentioned above you can imagine how this all adds up and stacks to create an absolute damage machine.

Armor Penetration: Our last Tier 4 Combat Tree skill that just sends this build to the moon and will make your playthrough on even the hardest difficulty a breeze. With this skill our attacks will ignore most and at higher ranks even decrease an enemies armor making our crazy amounts of damage essentially non-negotiable on even some of the games strongest characters/adversaries. This cherry on top allows us to down most bosses in a single clip.

Medicine: This skill is actually very important to balancing out some of the choices we made at level 1 with our build. Taking this skill will offset the negative effects we get for choosing the Alien DNA trait at character creation by making our med-packs, trauma packs, and emergency kits work faster and restore more health. It is found in the Science Tree.

Weapon Engineering: Our second recommended skill from the Science Tree is Weapon Engineering as this will allow us to customize and deck out our sniper rifles to be as deadly and as stealthy as we need them to be to further maximize our damage output and sniping effectiveness.

Boost Pack Training: The only required Tech Tree skill is a very important one that we get right out the gates for choosing the Soldier background. Boost Pack Training gives us that verticality we need to get out of a nasty situation quickly, position ourselves optimally before an encounter by getting to higher ground to make the most out of our various skill bonuses, weapon and armor traits to deal the most amount of damage by ensuring one of the core principles of sniping strategy is provided. Distance.
