Discover the best Starfield Unarmed Build for 2026. This build focuses on high-speed melee combat using your fists, chaining stuns, and overwhelming enemies without ever needing ammo.

If you’re tired of being ammo starved and dumping skill points into Scavenging just to keep shooting, the Unarmed Build is the perfect solution. Instead of relying on weapons, you use raw fists, mobility, and crowd control mechanics to dominate enemies.
In 2026, Starfield has made mobility and close-range combat more viable with updates like Free Lanes and Terran Armada DLC, making this build stronger than ever when paired with Starborn powers for survivability and gap closing.
This guide is updated for Starfield Free Lanes and Terran Armada DLC (1.16.236).
Starfield Unarmed Build Overview
The Unarmed build focuses on high speed, damage mitigation, and close quarters attacks with fist instead of weapons. What makes the build unique is it can stun and knockdown enemies, giving it some of the best crowd control in Starfield. Without needing weapons or ammunition, you can use your credits and resources to focus on other aspects of the game. Plus, you can save skill points to focus on Spacesuit and Starship crafting and building.
However, the build can be risky to play and requires many skill points into the Physical tree to start feeling powerful. You will also need to move quickly and stay aggressive to deal with ranged enemies. Once you get enough skill points around level 35, you will feel ultra powerful punching enemies into oblivion. Below are some pros and cons of the build, followed by a comparison to the Melee build, which uses weapons and different skills. How to Play a Starfield Unarmed Build

Before you start spamming punching attacks, you need to understand how unarmed attacks work. There are three different types of attacks, with different button configurations:
- Basic Attack: Standard punches (trigger button).
- Power Attack: Heavy attack with higher damage and effects (melee button)
- Block: Reduces damage and enables counterplay (aim button)
Close the gap quickly using your Boost Pack. Use power attacks to stagger enemies. Chain stuns with Neurostrikes and focus on one enemy at a time. Your goal is to never stand still using the Gymnastics combat slide in conjunction with your Boost Pack to skip ahead, slide, rinse and repeat. You can then use Starborn powers to get invisibility or a shield as you approach your enemies. Then, stun lock and punch one, move to the next target.
You will be most vulnerable in open areas, with range, against a group. You can use Stun Mines in close quarters to stun a group while you focus individuals down. Otherwise, mobility, Starborn powers, and line of sight to pick off one target at a time.
Unarmed Best Background

The best background for the Unarmed build is the Bouncer which grants the skills Boxing, Security, and Fitness. Boxing is your key skill you want unlocked at level and it’s different than Dueling. You must have no weapons equipped and fist only for this to trigger extra damage and effects. This background is great choice not only for thematic purposes, but with Security you can unlock digital locks immediately and with Fitness gain extra Oxygen needed to sprint and close the gaps.
The Bounty Hunter is the best alternative choice for backgrounds because it gives three useful skills as level one, though it doesn’t provide Boxing. Gangster might seem nice, but with one skill in Shotgun Certification, it’s a dead skill for this build. Ultimately, the background choice isn’t critical at mid and end-game, but picking the right one can save you pain and frustrating when it takes a lot of skills to reach Neurostrikes.
Best Traits for a Unarmed Build

An unarmed build needs massive oxygen capacity and health. The three best traits are Alien DNA (more health and oxygen), Introvert/Extrovert (more oxygen), and Wanted. Wanted grants a damage buff of 20% when your health drops below 20%. You are likely to get this often, using a Med Pack while retaining the damage buff. The downside is, you will be attacked by mercenaries, though they have high level equipment and drops on them.
Alien DNA reduces healing received but one or more ranks of Medicine negates this downside. For Introvert or Extrovert, take this if you plan on always playing solo or with a companion. Introvert is ideal for solo player with the Isolation skill. However, it requires four skill points into the social tree to reach, and Extrovert is better as you need a distraction in combat.
Just remember, you can always remove traits in game with quest or medical centers if needed.
Best Weapons for the Unarmed Build in Starfield

While unarmed builds don’t need weapons, you should always carry a couple backups in case you are attacked by flying creatures. Pistols and Rifles are great choices because of their abundant ammo. The Hard Target sniper rifle is a great choice for super long distance flying creatures.
Best Armor for Unarmed build

The best armor you can find for your unarmed build centers on mobility, not face tanking enemies. There is a trait called Fast Reflexes, that increases Spacesuit movement speed by 15%. This is by far the best way to increase your speed in combination with Amp chem which we share below.
The repulsing trait is also effective if you’re going up against fellow melee attackers as it has a chance to disarm them. Mechanized is helpful to boost your carrying capacity so you don’t get encumbered which will destroy the entire build. O2 Boosted gives 20% more oxygen capacity, and O2 Filter gives -25% oxygen consumption. These two are also strong choices for your helmet and pack.
Lastly, make sure your Boost Pack has Skip Capacity power pack. You can make horizontal boost, and it combines with your Gymnastics slide. You can slide, boost forward, and punch. Even better, you can use the Grav Dash Starborn power and travel a massive distance, avoiding the killer open field fights.

Unarmed Build Best Skills
The best skills for the Unarmed Build in Starfield are Boxing, Martial Arts, Neurostrikes and Gymnastics. With these skills, you combine a variety of melee attack options with the increased mobility of the Gynastics skill.
- Boxing: unarmed attacks deal more damage and require less oxygen. At level four, you can knock down opponent and stun them! Remember that you must be unarmed and this bonus is different than the combat skill dueling. This is your primary damage source and at level one you should have one point unlocked with Bouncer background.
- Martial Arts: increases critical hit chance. At rank two, 15% chance to disarm enemies with power attacks from unarmed. This is your burst damage skill point selection, and note you must power attack to disarm enemies. Therefore, try open with a power attack from stealth or on human targets who have weapons equipped.
- Neurostrikes: Unarmed attack stun enemies. After four skills, when you knock them them down, you totally disable them. This is your bread and butter skill that essentially stun locks enemies making them completely controlled in combat.
- Gymnastics: Rank one unlocks the fast combat slide and less fall damage. Combine the slide with skip boost to cover huge distance including adding Grav Dash Starborn power to close distances.
- Boost Pack Training: Enables Jet Pack boosting. You also want to unlock Boost Assault Training which deals damage when you land. At Rank two of Boost Assault Training, you get a chance to knock down enemies when you land. Therefore, you can charge into groups and try to flatten the highest damage dealing target with a knockdown before getting shot.
- Spacesuit Design: Allows you to craft improvements for spacesuit, helmet, and packs. This is super helpful since you don’t need to modify weapons, but any armor can be upgraded and modified to fit your needs.
Unarmed Build Leveling Guide & Skills Progression (Level 1-50)

Your Unarmed skill progression will mainly focus on the Physical skill tree. Remember that combat and social are not a main part of the build, but you can spend some utility points into social (four needed) to unlock Isolation. Best Aid (Chems) for Unarmed Build

For an unarmed build, the two primary things you want are speed and damage reduction. Amp is a great chem that you can use repeatedly since it’s so easy to find and it boost your speed by 35%! Black Hole Heart, Frostwolf, and others combine speed increase with damage reduction and other bonuses. These are your go to for raw power. Below are some other suggestions that are helpful:
| Chem | Effect | Why It’s Good |
|---|---|---|
| Amp | Speed boost | Close distance |
| Frostwolf | Damage + resistance | Core combat buff |
| Reconstim | Health regen | Sustain |
| Battlestim | Combat boost | Balanced buff |
| Med Packs | Healing | Survival |
Best Starborn Powers for Unarmed Build

Reactive Shield and Void Form are the two best Starborn powers. Use Void Form to close the distance in stealth, and unload on your first target. Once the bullets start flying, use Reactive Shield to protect you as you close the distance or attack another enemy. Another strategy is to use Phased Time with Amp or another Aid item that boost speed. You can quickly go from one enemy to the next and stun them, wiping out a full room before the power fades. Below are our favorite Starborn powers for this build:
| Power | Effect | Why It’s Good |
|---|---|---|
| Phased Time | Slow time | Free hits |
| Void Form | Invisibility | Gap close safely |
| Reactive Shield | Reflect damage | Survivability |
| Gravity Well | Pull enemies | Group control |
| Personal Atmosphere | Infinite stamina | Mobility |
