Starfield 2026 Roadmap Summary
April 7, 2026 is the biggest single day in Starfield’s post-launch history. Bethesda is releasing the game’s largest free update ever, a brand new story DLC, and bringing Starfield to PlayStation 5 for the first time, all on the same day. This guide breaks down everything coming to the game this year so you know exactly what to expect when the update goes live, whether you are a returning player or picking up Starfield for the first time on PS5.
Quick Summary: The Free Lanes update is free for all players and adds interplanetary travel, X-Tech upgrades, New Game Plus improvements, and much more. The Terran Armada DLC is a separate paid story expansion at $9.99. Both launch April 7, 2026 alongside Starfield’s PS5 debut.
The Free Lanes Update (Free for All Players)
The Free Lanes update is the headline addition and it is available to every Starfield player at no cost. Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb has described it as the largest update the game has received since its September 2023 launch. The update touches almost every system in the game.
Interplanetary Travel and Cruise Mode
The single most requested feature since launch is finally here. You can now fly freely between planets within a star system in real time, without loading screens or menus. Cruise Mode is the dedicated travel state that makes this work.
In Cruise Mode your ship accelerates to extreme speeds, covering the distance between planets in a matter of minutes. You can stay in the pilot seat and watch the journey unfold, or engage autopilot and walk freely around your ship. While on autopilot, you can talk to crew members, use workbenches, decorate your ship, or manage your inventory. Your compass display in the corner of the screen counts down to your arrival so you always know when to get back to the cockpit.
There are four speed options within Cruise Mode. Planets also exert a mild gravitational pull as you approach, and the transition back to standard space flight has a cinematic quality to it.
Note: Cruise Mode and some new content require you to have started the main quest at The Lodge, similar to how Shattered Space worked at launch.
New Space Encounters and Interdictions
With the Free Lanes update, space between planets is no longer empty. Bethesda has populated the Free Lanes with new dynamic content including radiant anomalies, ship wreckage, derelict vessels, and new hostile encounters that load in as you travel.
Some of these encounters are passive and optional. Others are Interdictions, a new type of combat event that will pull you out of Cruise Mode automatically and force you to deal with the threat before you can continue on your way. These are not avoidable and add a layer of unpredictability to long-distance travel that was not there before.

X-Tech: The New Upgrade Resource
X-Tech is a new crafting resource that serves as the primary currency for the game’s expanded upgrade and customization system. It can be found through combat and exploration, including boss chests, ship wreckage, and Terran Armada Incursion events.
Here is what you can do with X-Tech:
- Re-roll legendary effects on weapons, helmets, packs, and suits. You get 5 re-rolls using X-Tech and credits. If none of the rolls give you what you want, the full list of modifiers opens up so you can pick the one you are after directly.
- Apply new Tier 4 legendary effects to rank 3 legendary items. Unlike the re-roll system, Tier 4 effects do not require rolling. You pick the one you want. Some gear even becomes “Exotic” when fully upgraded to this level.
- Purchase new ship modules through the Ship Optimization Terminal, including an EM Pulse Shield and a Stealth Drive.
- Boost core ship stats including shield strength, weapons, engines, and grav drive beyond their previous limits via the Ship Optimization Terminal.
Some of the new Tier 4 legendary effects confirmed so far include:
- Saboteur: Damaging robots has a chance to instantly kill them. Robots explode on death. (Particularly useful against the Terran Armada.)
- Reckless: Ranged weapons only. Magazine size is reduced to 1, damage is increased by 500%, and health is reduced by 50%.
- Enigmatic: Suit only: Holograms of yourself appear while in combat, confusing nearby enemies.

New Gear Quality Tiers
Two new gear quality tiers have been added above the existing Advanced tier. The new tiers are Superior and Exceptional. These represent the new ceiling for gear in Starfield and are found primarily in Level 75+ star systems. Do not invest X-Tech into Advanced tier gear when these tiers are available.
There is also a new Upgrade Module slot added to gear customization. This slot allows you to upgrade a specific stat on a piece of gear such as range or rate of fire, adding another layer of build control that was not there before.

New Game Plus Improvements
Two major changes have been made to the New Game Plus experience.
First, you can now rank up your Starborn abilities using Quantum Essence without having to start a new cycle and hunt down every temple again. This is a significant quality of life improvement, as maxing out Starborn abilities previously required grinding through hundreds of temples across multiple playthroughs. You can now Favorite Quantum Essence from the Powers Menu for quick access during combat, which also enables ability combos like chaining Phase Time, Void Form, and Grav Dash together.
Second, the Quantum Entanglement Device solves the longstanding problem of losing all your gear when you step through the Unity. You build it at The Lodge after collecting all the Artifacts, store up to 50 kg of items inside it, and those items will be waiting for you in The Lodge at the start of your next playthrough. You can expand the capacity up to 200 by spending Quantum Essence.
Quantum Essence farming has also been expanded. In addition to earning it by defeating Starborn enemies, you can now earn it by destroying Starborn ships in space.
Outpost Improvements
Several meaningful changes have been made to outpost management.
The new Shared Outpost Container lets you install a shared storage container at each of your outposts. Items placed in any one of these containers are accessible from all other outposts that have one, eliminating the need to manually transfer resources between locations.
The new Database system appears in your character menu and consolidates everything you have discovered in one place, including locations you have visited, recipes you have found, resources and ingredients you have researched, and where to find them. You can Favorite planets you visit frequently and use the Database to fast travel to known resource locations.
Outpost pets are also new. Complete the “Housesitting” quest in Anchorpoint to unlock the Milliewhale, a customizable alien creature that lives at your outpost, performs tricks, and can be recolored to match your preferred aesthetic.

New Locations and Content
The Free Lanes update adds several new locations and points of interest to the game world.
Anchorpoint Station is a new starstation with vendors, quests, and NPCs to interact with. It serves as a hub for several new side quests and is the place to look if you want to purchase the new Asteroid Base Home, a high-end player home available for players with enough credits to spend. There are also many new planetary POIs added to increase variety during surface exploration.
The Moon Jumper is the new land vehicle. It is built for vertical movement and has impressive boost capabilities, making it much easier to reach elevated areas on planetary surfaces that the REV-8 could not access.
There are also 27 Colony War Action Hero collectibles to track down across the game world. Each one provides a stat buff, with different buffs for opened and unopened versions. Unopened figures are displayed in new outpost display cases.
New Enemy Modifiers
Combat has been expanded with new enemy modifiers that appear on certain enemies and are visible through the scanner. New modifiers include:
- Tank: 3x base health
- Tricky: chance to avoid incoming damage
- Martyr: death puts all nearby allies into a rage state
- And more, identifiable by new icons near enemy health bars
You can tune how often modifiers appear through the Gameplay Options menu, giving you control over how much extra challenge you want from combat.
New Elite Crew and Companions
Fan-favorite NPC Muria Siarkiewicz can now be recruited as an Elite Crewmember. Find her at her usual spot near Galbank in New Atlantis.
The Terran Armada DLC adds a second new companion, Delta, a reprogrammed Terran Armada robot. Design Director Emil Pagliarulo describes him as “not evil, but definitely not good,” which should fit in well on most morally flexible crews.
There is also a new ModelG mini-bot available as an Elite Crewmember through the Terran Armada DLC. Start the “Spare Parts” quest in The Well in New Atlantis to unlock it. You can customize its paint job and change its personality settings.

Terran Armada DLC ($9.99)
The Terran Armada is Starfield’s second paid story DLC, available separately for $9.99. Players who own the Premium Edition or Premium Upgrade get it included at no additional cost.
The Terran Armada are a military faction made up of UC and Freestar Collective veterans who disappeared during the Colony War and have now returned with advanced robotic soldiers and technology. They describe themselves as the true children of Earth, and their goal is to unify the Settled Systems under a single authority. Their motivations are intentionally unclear at the start of the story, but the consequences of the conflict will ripple across the entire galaxy by the end.
The core repeatable content of the DLC is the Incursion system. Incursions are combat events that can occur almost anywhere in the Settled Systems. You can see active Incursions on the Starmap and choose whether to engage or avoid them. Be careful: Terran technology can prevent you from grav jumping away once you are near an active Incursion, so you cannot always disengage easily.
Incursions range from small skirmishes and scouting parties to large-scale infiltrations of Terran vessels like robot assemblers, assault ships, and landing platforms. Some are required to advance the story. Others are fully optional and repeatable, providing a consistent source of high-level loot and X-Tech. You can adjust how frequently optional Incursions occur through the Gameplay Options menu.
The DLC also introduces new Terran-specific ship modules, including new double-decker habs, a large new cockpit, and structural parts with a tactical, grounded aesthetic. You can find schematics at ship services technicians or simply commandeer a Terran ship you like, register it, and make it your own. New Terran weapons and space suits are also available through loot drops and vendors, with a more military, real-world look and feel compared to the existing gear in the game.
The DLC includes a pre-built outpost cabin module that you can drop on any planet. It comes fully decorated but can be customized once placed. New faction-themed workbench skins and animal habitat decorations are also included.
Starfield on PlayStation 5
Starfield launches on PS5 on April 7, 2026, with the Free Lanes update built into the base experience from day one. The PS5 version includes full DualSense support with several features worth noting.
Adaptive Triggers give different weapons and ship systems their own unique resistance and feedback on the L2 and R2 buttons. The Light Bar shifts color to reflect your health on the ground and your ship’s status in space, pulsing red when danger is imminent. The Touchpad provides quick navigation shortcuts including POV switching, map access, hand scanner activation, and swipe gestures for Inventory, Missions, and Skills. Audio logs and ship intercom dialogue play directly through the DualSense controller speaker.
On PS5 Pro, players can choose between Pro Visual Mode (4K output targeting 30 FPS using PSSR upscaling) and Pro Performance Mode (targeting 60 FPS with PSSR).
The base game price has also dropped to $49.99 across all platforms.

What Comes Next for Starfield?
When asked directly about future content beyond Free Lanes and Terran Armada, Tim Lamb confirmed that Bethesda has a long-term plan in place and is still actively working on Starfield. “There is a lot more in the lore, things the team is excited about, things we still want to pursue,” Lamb said, without announcing anything specific. He also confirmed that Bethesda plans to continue using Creations as a future content avenue when the time is right.
No specific updates or DLC beyond what is launching April 7 have been announced at this time. We will update this guide as new information becomes available.
The Final Word
April 7, 2026 is the most content-rich single day Starfield has had since launch. The Free Lanes update addresses the game’s most persistent criticisms head-on, the Terran Armada gives players a reason to engage with the world in a new way, and the PS5 launch opens the game to an entirely new audience.
If you are returning to Starfield after stepping away, this is the update that makes it worth coming back. If you are brand new, you are starting with the best version of the game that has ever existed.
Everything launches April 7, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

Starfield 2026 Roadmap FAQ
1. Is the Free Lanes update free for all Starfield players?
Yes. The Free Lanes update is completely free for every Starfield player on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. You do not need the Terran Armada DLC or any other paid content to access it.
2. Do you need the Terran Armada DLC to use X-Tech?
No. X-Tech is part of the free Free Lanes update and is available to all players. However, the most reliable source of X-Tech is Terran Armada Incursion events, which are exclusive to the DLC. Players without the DLC can still earn X-Tech through boss chests and exploration, but at a slower rate.
3. Is Starfield on PS5 a separate purchase or an upgrade?
It is a separate purchase for new players at $49.99. If you already own Starfield on PC or Xbox you do not receive a free PS5 version, but the price drop to $49.99 applies across all platforms. The Premium Edition, which includes both Shattered Space and the Terran Armada DLC, is also available.
4. Will Bethesda release more updates and DLC beyond Free Lanes and Terran Armada?
Bethesda has confirmed they are still actively working on Starfield and have a long-term support plan in place, but nothing beyond the April 7 content has been announced. Tim Lamb confirmed there is more in the lore the team wants to explore. We will update this guide as new content is announced.
5. Can you access all the new Free Lanes content from the start of a new playthrough?
Not entirely. Cruise Mode and some of the new content tied to the main quest require you to have started the main story at The Lodge before becoming available. New items like X-Tech and weapon upgrade modules can drop from boss chests earlier in the game, so some features are accessible sooner than others.
