In Bethesda Game Studios’ space RPG Starfield, traits are optional character modifiers chosen at the start of the game. These are known as character traits and play a key role in shaping your playstyle and overall experience. While backgrounds provide your initial skills, traits offer unique “Pros and Cons” that can significantly alter your gameplay. Some provide flat stat boosts, while others unlock entire questlines or unique NPC interactions. Keep in mind, traits can now be removed via in game actions. Therefore, if you make a “bad” choice or regret a decision, it can be undone.
Below, we break down the best traits in Starfield, ranked based on their utility, combat performance, and how they synergize with the latest 2026 updates.

Starfield Best Traits (Top 5 Ranked)

Below we give you details on the top 5 Starfield traits and why they are essential for your 2026 playthrough:
- Wanted Trait: You get a damage boost at low health which procs constantly in the new Terran Armada Incursions. However, expect to be attacked, which is great for combat fans.
- Taskmaster Trait: If you enjoy the new Shipbuilding features, this is mandatory. It keeps your ship in the fight while you focus on piloting.
- Alien DNA Trait: The best “set it and forget it” trait. The O2 pool increase allows for much longer sprinting and melee combos.
- Empath Trait: Turns your companions into combat monsters. In the 2026 meta, companion damage is finally viable.
- Hero Worshipped Trait: Grants you an adoring fan who joins your crew, gives gifts, and can be a humorous but sometimes annoying presence.
1. Wanted (Best Overall Trait)

The Wanted trait is the strongest in Starfield because it provides a damage buff when your health is low. While the games math isn’t shown, you gain 20% more damage below 20% health. This is a massive combat benefit to any build, especially those with higher health pool to trigger the effect more frequently.
Another interesting factor of the trait is bounty hunters ambush you instead of generic enemies. This gives you tons of constant combat, when the game can otherwise feel stale exploring planets. It essentially is the perfect trait if you love Starfields combat and want extra fights, plus a massive benefit.
The attackers who come after you also create extra loot opportunities, since they carry high-tier gear and the new X-Tech resources, meaning this trait essentially delivers loot directly to your ship’s doorstep.
While Wanted is the best overall trait, we don’t recommend it for players who enjoy dialogue, story, ship building, and don’t want to fuss with extra combat. For everyone else, it’s a perfect choice for your character.
2. Taskmaster (Best for Ship Builds)

With the Terran Armada DLC introducing massive fleet battles, ship survivability is now a top priority. Taskmaster gives your ship a chance to automatically repair a certain ship system back to full health whenever it gets damaged, provided you have a ship’s crew member trained in that ship system.
The downside of the trait is that crew cost is doubled. While this is annoying at the beginning, by mid-game you will have massive amounts of credits. This downside goes away very quickly, with an automatic heal to full for ship fights, giving you a big advantage when Starfield emphasises ship combat. Just note, you cannot take Taskmaster trait with any other faction allegiance trait.
With little downsides outside the credit cost, most players should pick Taskmaster if they don’t intend to use a faction specific trait. Therefore, we rank it second best trait in Starfield for 2026, especially for your ship’s crew during battles.
3. Alien DNA

The Alien DNA trait ranks third on our list because of the increased health and oxygen. This bonuses help every build with a limited downside, weaker healing and food items. While the game doesn’t directly tell you the statistical bonuses, its +50 health and oxygen. That makes Alien DNA especially strong in the early game, since the trait increases maximum health and oxygen for survivability.
The Alien DNA trait is the result of a controversial experiment that combines alien and human DNA, granting increased health and oxygen but reducing healing effectiveness.
The negatives are, your food items and healing decreased by 20%, which you can offset by ranking up your Medicine Skill. However, this can impact later game builds. Alien DNA can be removed by a Doctor at Reliant Health for 10,000 credits. You can find these doctors on New Atlantis, Neon City, and Cydonia.
Since Alien DNA can be removed, it has a unique advantage over every other trait. Simply use it at the start of Starfield to get better health and oxygen, then remove in mid to later game when your healing items are more impactful. We keep it third on our best traits list just because it scales poorly in the later levels, but you can always remove it which is a big boost.
4. Empath

The Empath trait is a great choice for players using companions and want extra support in combat. How it works is by choosing dialogue choices that your companions will like grants them Self-Esteem buff. This buff increases their critical hit chance, making them perform much better in combat.
Being deeply connected with your companions can greatly improve your combat effectiveness, as strong emotional bonds and understanding lead to better teamwork and performance in battles.
However, the downsides of Empath is, you will get a debuff on disapproval dialogue selections. Making choices your companion dislikes has the precise opposite effect, reducing their performance in combat. The best way to use Empath is bringing along a companion that aligns with your gameplay decisions so you never experience a negative debuff. They will get a consistent damage boost, making them better in combat with little trade offs.
If you enjoy companions, and pick one that coincides with your goals, the Empath is a must have trait in Starfield.
5. Serpent’s Embrace

The Serpent’s Embrace is a great trait for players who constantly hop from one system to another. Grav jumping grants a temporary boost to health and oxygen, but if you don’t continue jumping regularly, you’ll suffer decreased health and oxygen. Since jumps are easy to control, and you’re rarely locked into a planet, this is a great trait to get extra stats.
Something to be aware of with Serpent’s Embrace, you won’t be able to combine it with another religious trait (Raised Universal, Raised Enlightened). For most players, this won’t be an issue and since health and oxygen are needed on every build, it’s useful to have if you don’t mind being a serpent worshipper or jumping constantly.
Best Starfield Trait for Each Build
If you’re building toward a specific playstyle, here’s the best trait to choose:
- Combat Encounter Boost: Wanted + Alien DNA
- Solo in Space: Introvert (if solo, best for those who prefer alone time while adventuring) or Neon Street Rat

- Fun Roleplaying: Kid Stuff + Hero Worshipped
- Best Companion Build: Empath + Extrovert (ideal for a people person who enjoys traveling with other human companions)

Faction Allegiance and Religion Traits in Starfield
When building your Starfield character, your choice of background is just as important as your selection of traits! Backgrounds provide three starting skills that shape your early gameplay, offering unique advantages like increased weapon damage, new abilities, or specialized expertise. But beyond these initial perks, backgrounds also influence which traits will best complement your playstyle, allowing you to create a character that truly excels in your chosen path. Backgrounds help shape your early game before traits refine the build.
For example, if you prefer adventuring with human companions, backgrounds like Soldier or Bouncer pair perfectly with the Extrovert trait, which reduces oxygen consumption when traveling with others. This synergy means you can explore longer and fight harder without worrying about running out of O2! On the flip side, if you’re a lone explorer, backgrounds such as Cyber Runner work well with the Introvert trait, granting increased stamina and less oxygen usage when you’re on your own.
Faction allegiance traits – like Neon Street Rat, the neon street rat trait with Neon-specific dialogue and reward flavor, United Colonies Native, or Freestar Collective Settler – are another layer to consider when deciding how to use each trait slot during character creation! These traits let you gain access to special dialogue options and better rewards from some missions, but they also increase your crime bounty with other factions. If your background aligns with a particular group, your interactions with those factions is greatly increased. Choosing the corresponding faction allegiance trait can open up exclusive missions, unique gear, and deeper roleplay opportunities.
Religious traits like Raised Enlightened and the raised universal trait also interact with backgrounds in interesting ways. If your character’s story leans into spirituality or faith, a religion trait can provide exclusive loot opportunities, such access to a special chest called the Enlightened Chest – and unique dialogue options, but you’ll lose access to the precise opposite faction’s rewards. Choosing a background that fits this narrative, such as one focused on diplomacy or science, can make these religious traits even more meaningful and impactful for your character build.

Can you change traits once selected?
Yes, you can remove all traits in Starfield, but they must be removed individually through specific in-game actions, such as speaking to specific NPCs, visiting doctors, or completing quests
What is the best trait for a Sniper build?

Starfield Best Traits FAQ
1. What is the best trait in Starfield?
Wanted is the strongest overall trait, granting a 20% damage boost when your health drops below 20% and generating constant extra combat encounters with high-tier loot. It is the only trait with no practical counter, making it the default pick for any combat-focused build.
2. How many traits can you pick in Starfield?
You can select up to three traits during character creation, and choosing all three is always recommended since leaving slots empty gives up free advantages. Some traits cannot be paired together, such as Taskmaster and faction allegiance traits, so check for conflicts before confirming your selections.
3. Can you remove or change traits after character creation?
You can remove traits individually through specific in-game actions, but you cannot swap them for different ones without using console commands. Alien DNA is removed by a doctor at Reliant Medical for 10,000 credits, Dream Home by foreclosing the property, and other traits through relevant NPC dialogue or quest completion.
4. Do traits carry over into New Game Plus?
Yes, your traits persist into New Game Plus runs and cannot be changed there without console commands. Remove any traits you regret before entering NG+ if their downsides have become more of a burden than the bonuses are worth.
5. Is the Kid Stuff trait worth taking?
Yes, primarily because your parents give you increasingly valuable gifts over time including weapons, armor, and eventually a ship. The 2% weekly credit drain is a negligible cost by mid-game and can be cancelled at any time by speaking directly to your parents.
6. Can faction allegiance traits cause problems?
Yes. Faction traits like Neon Street Rat, United Colonies Native, and Freestar Collective Settler grant unique dialogue and better rewards with their aligned faction but increase your crime bounty with opposing factions. Pick the faction whose questline and rewards align most closely with your intended playthrough.
7. Is Alien DNA worth removing in the late game?
It depends on how heavily your build relies on healing items. The +50 health and oxygen bonus is strongest in the early game, and the 20% healing penalty becomes more noticeable as you consume more chems and food in later difficulty content, so removing it at Reliant Medical once your Medicine skill is ranked up is a reasonable mid-game decision.
