Starfield Leveling Guide Overview
Bethesda Game Studios designed Starfield’s progression so you earn XP from kills, quests, exploration, and scanning, receiving one skill point per level to spend across 80+ skills with four ranks each.
There is no hard level cap in Starfield, but fully maxing the skill tree requires reaching roughly level 326, which demands hundreds of hours for most players. The main XP sources in the game include:
- Quests (main story, faction, radiant missions)
- Combat (enemies grant XP based on their level)
- Exploration and scanning (new systems, planets, flora, fauna)
- Crafting at outposts
- Various XP buffs from sleep, romance, and consumables
- Custom Difficulty Modifiers, such as increased Enemy Combat Damage or reduced Carrying Capacity
This guide focuses first on fast methods for quick power spikes, then covers smart skill choices for the long run.
Starfield Leveling Guide TL;DR
- Main story quests, high-level wildlife farming, and planet exploration are the three fastest consistent XP sources in Starfield.
- Stacking xp bonuses (sleeping, romance/marriage, food and drinks like alien tea) is the core trick to leveling faster than the default pace.
- Hunting wildlife on high-level planets with Abundant Fauna designations and a nearby outpost is the most reliable XP farm method.
- Picking focused early skills like Piloting, a weapon type specialization, Weight Lifting, and Security makes leveling feel faster and safer.
- Increasing difficulty in the Starfield Gameplay Options offers many custom ways to increase XP gain for a slightly more challenging gameplay experience.
- There is effectively no practical level cap, so efficiency matters if you want to unlock most of the 80+ skills within reasonable playtime.

How To Level Up Quickly in Starfield
Always try to play with at least one XP buff active. Sleeping, romance bonuses, and consumables stack multiplicatively, meaning you can effectively double your XP rate with minimal effort.
The main fast XP activities include:
- Main quests (500–800+ extra xp per quest mid-to-late game)
- High-level wildlife hunts on Abundant Fauna planets
- Scanning and surveying new systems
- Faction and radiant missions from mission boards
- Combat in pirate systems with crimson fleet ships (using the right weapons can make defeating enemies much more efficient for XP farming)
Some of these are obvious ways to gain XP quickly, like hunting wildlife or completing missions, and should not be overlooked.
Defeating enemies grants XP for each kill, which can accumulate quickly in areas with many foes.
Combine these methods: sleep at the Lodge, trigger Emotional Security if married, drink alien tea, then run a wildlife loop or complete missions back-to-back. Consider bumping up Enemy Combat Damage, reducing Player Combat Damage and a host of other custom modifiers to gain an additional 20-30% more XP if your build can handle it.
Stack Your XP Bonuses (Sleep, Romance, Food & Drinks)
XP stacking means timing sleep, romance scenes, and consumables so you rarely play without a bonus active. Here’s how each bonus works:
- Well Rested: Sleep in any owned or free bed (your ship, the Lodge in new atlantis) for a 10% XP increase for an in-game period.
- Emotional Security: Sleeping with a committed companion grants 15% XP—higher than basic Well Rested.
- Alien Tea / Tranquilitea: Craft at cooking stations using Distilled Water and Fiber, or buy from vendors in major cities. Provides +1–2% XP that stacks with sleep bonuses.
- Food and Drinks: Consuming quality food and drinks not only grants XP bonuses but also helps heal your character. Investing in the Nutrition skill boosts the healing capabilities of food items in Starfield, making them more effective for health recovery in addition to XP gains.
A practical routine:
- Head to the Lodge or your ship
- Sleep to trigger Well Rested or Emotional Security
- Consume alien tea
- Immediately start your planned XP activity (missions or wildlife farming)
This stacking approach transforms leveling from passive progress into active optimization.

Complete Main, Side, and Radiant Missions For Big XP
Main story missions are among the largest single XP sources, regularly granting 500–800+ XP per quest as you progress. Complete missions through the Constellation questline early for both XP and narrative progression.
Major faction questlines also provide sizable rewards:
- UC Vanguard (lawful combat focus)
- Freestar Rangers (frontier-style missions)
- Crimson Fleet (criminal operations)
- Ryujin Industries (corporate espionage)
Smaller side quests and radiant missions from mission boards yield less XP individually but can be completed quickly and infinitely. My favorite option for these is Bounty missions. Find mission boards in New Atlantis, Akila City, Neon, the Lodge, or your ship for cargo deliveries, bounty hunts, and rescue tasks.
To maximize efficiency, accept multiple quests in the same system before traveling. Turn in several objectives at once while your XP buffs remain active.

Farm XP By Hunting Wildlife On High-Level Planets
Wildlife farming is the single most consistent xp farm method once you can reliably handle higher-level creatures. Killing high-level wildlife on planets is one of the fastest ways to level up in Starfield. This works better if its not an extreme climate. Here’s how to set it up:
- Search the star map for terrestrial worlds with “Abundant Fauna” or “Rich Fauna” designations
- Target high level planets where creature levels exceed your own for better XP per kill
- Good farm spots include Jemisin in the Alpha Centauri system and Cerebri2 in the Cerebri system
Build outposts near creature spawn zones with a landing pad. This lets you fast travel in, do a hunting circuit, then leave and return to reset spawns. Choosing the right weapons is crucial for efficient creature farming – use a strong rifle, shotgun, or even the Cutter to save ammo during extended hunts.
Dropping difficulty to Very Easy speeds up farming without affecting XP gains. Some high-level creatures grant hundreds of XP each when you kill them. Always keep XP buffs active before starting wildlife loops.
Explore, Scan, and Survey Systems For Steady XP
Moving across planets via passive exploration XP adds up across dozens of hours and shouldn’t be ignored while traveling between quests. You gain XP for:
- Discovering a new system
- Entering orbit around a new planet
- Landing on a planet for the first time (any new location counts)
- Finding key locations like landmarks, structures, and cities
Landing on new planets is especially important—each time you land on a planet for the first time, you earn XP and unlock opportunities to discover new locations, harvest resources, and encounter unique wildlife. Make sure to land on as many different planets as possible to maximize your XP gains.
Use your hand scanner to survey flora, fauna, and resources. This grants XP and fills out planet survey percentages. Some planets are easier to complete—gas giants and worlds with few biomes can be targeted for quick exploration XP bursts.
Always scan wildlife before you kill it. Complete surveys while doing other stuff like hunting or collecting materials for crafting. Make a habit of stretching your path across the star map to explore new systems each time you fly somewhere.

Join Factions and Use Mission Boards For Continuous XP
Joining factions opens large questlines plus smaller mission boards tied to each group. Faction story quests mix combat, stealth, and persuasion, providing XP alongside unique ships, armor, and cash that indirectly speed up leveling.
General mission boards in major starports, bars, and faction HQs offer repeatable radiant jobs:
- Bounty hunts
- Cargo deliveries
- Clearing pirate outposts
- Passenger transport
The Tracker Alliance bounty system is particularly reliable for combat missions that grant both XP and loot. Pick factions matching your build – stealthy corporate work with Ryujin, lawful combat with UC Vanguard – to make XP grinding more engaging. If you want a break from wildlife farming, you can wait and switch to faction missions for a change of pace. Use faction missions as breaks between wildlife farming to avoid getting tired of repetitive loops.

Gameplay Options and Difficulty Modifiers
Using the right gameplay options and difficulty modifiers could easily have you gaining 20-30% bonus experience at all times in Starfield! Many players miss this step as custom difficulty modifiers were added to the game post-launch. Here are some of the best modifiers to consider if you plan on min-maxing your XP gains at all times:
- Enemy Combat Damage: 2-6% bonus
- Player Combat Damage: 2-6% bonus
- Enemy Ship Damage: 2-6% bonus
- Player Ship Damage: 2-6% bonus
- Ammo Weight – Weighted Ammo On: 4% bonus
- Carry Capacity – Reduced: 4% bonus
- Cargo Access Distance – Inside Ship: 2% bonus
- Vendor Credits – Reduced: 4% bonus
- Medical Item Healing – Slowly: 4% bonus
- Food Healing – None: 2% bonus
- Sleep Healing – None: 4%
- Sustenance – Positive & Negative: 4% bonus
- Combat Affliction Gain – Increased: 4%
- Affliction Treatment – Improve Only: 6%
- Affliction Prognosis – Advanced: 5%
- Environmental Damage & Afflictions – Advanced: 4% bonus
- Environmental Damage Restoration – Limited Resting: 4% bonus
As you can see, there are many options here which increase your total XP gain, however I do NOT recommend turning these all on at once. Several of these options however can be turned on with minimal impact. For example, turn off Sleep Healing and Food Healing, which are already slower than chem and med healing, and most players do not use these anyway for a total bonus of 6%. Reducing vendor credits can be done too with minimal impact as you can always rest to have vendors reset their credits.
Stay Prepared For Consistent Leveling
During exploration phases on high-level planetary environments, prioritizing your Piloting skill progression becomes your most important task, with the ability to access Pilot Class B and Class C spacecrafts. These advanced vessel classifications provide enhanced navigational capabilities, enabling access to previously restricted locations while also reducing unnecessary combat encounters and unlocking better resource acquisition opportunities alongside premium mission availability.
Best early-game skill unlock prioritization: specifically, Security specialization for advanced lockpicking mechanics, Persuasion mastery for expanded dialogue option trees, and comprehensive Piloting advancement for spacecraft upgrade accessibility will provide the best bang for your buck and also prevent progression bottlenecks that commonly affect less prepared players.
Systematic scanning protocols for undocumented creatures, fauna specimens, and wildlife will offer lots of consistent XP point gains while also unlocking valuable survey completion bonuses. Resource collection and material acquisition should be done continuously while exploring, with ammunition crafting or health pack crafting performed at outpost crafting stations to maintain your arsenal for the challenging combat encounters to come. This is even more key if you plan on using higher custom difficulty settings to min-max your XP gains.
Best Skills To Unlock And Level First
Early skill choices have a big impact on how smooth leveling feels. Choose a background giving useful starting skills like Boost Pack Training, Persuasion, Security, or Commerce to save early points.
Prioritize these universally strong early skills:
Skill | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
Rifle Certification (or weapon specialization) | Concentrated damage output, saves ammo |
Boost Pack Training | Faster traversal, better combat positioning |
Weight Lifting | Reduces encumbrance when looting and collecting materials |
Security | Better lockpicking returns, access higher-tier loot early |
Piloting | Unlock Class B and class c ships, improve space combat |
Focusing on one weapon type early is better than splitting points. It unlocks stronger rank bonuses and helps you kill enemies efficiently. Support skills like Medicine and Commerce can indirectly speed leveling by reducing downtime and increasing sell value from loot.

Smart Leveling Tips & Long-Term Planning
Plan a loose build concept (stealth sniper, heavy combat, diplomat trader, explorer) so later skill points support a coherent playstyle. Don’t rush into every skill tree at once. Instead, max out core combat and survivability before investing in niche crafting or social perks.
Reassess your build every 10–15 levels based on what content you enjoy most. Mix XP activities to avoid burnout: rotate between quests, exploration, and farming rather than repeating one method until you’re stuck in monotony.
New Game Plus exists, and carrying your character forward means efficient leveling now pays off in future runs. Don’t forget that the journey matters—stay efficient but also have fun.
Starfield Leveling Guide FAQ
1. What level should I be before tackling late-game or New Game Plus content?
Most players feel comfortable in late-game main quests around level 30–40. There’s no strict required level for New Game Plus though – you can finish the main story in the 20s. Having a solid weapon build and a good ship via piloting and combat skills makes the transition smoother. If enemies feel too tanky, do a few levels of wildlife farming first.
2. Does Starfield reduce XP on lower difficulty settings?
No. XP rewards are not reduced when you lower difficulty, meaning Very Easy grants the same easy xp per kill or quest as higher difficulties. Players can gain bonus XP for raising the custom difficulty modifiers above the standard levels.
3. Are there any XP penalties for using fast travel?
There is no direct XP penalty for fast travel. You don’t lose XP by jumping around via menus. The only “loss” is missing random encounters and exploration opportunities when manually flying. Mix fast travel for farming efficiency with occasional manual exploration for extra scan and discovery XP.
4. Is there a maximum level or can I eventually unlock every skill?
There is no practical level cap, so you can keep gaining levels indefinitely. Unlocking and fully ranking all 80+ skills requires reaching roughly level 326 or more, which is a very long-term goal requiring significant effort. Most players should focus on building a strong, fun set of core skills rather than trying to max the entire tree in a single playthrough. Save the completionist run for later.
