Quantum Essence has always been a resource in Starfield, but the Free Lanes update dramatically expanded what it does and how you can earn it. What was once a rare consumable used only to temporarily boost your Starborn power regeneration is now the primary currency for some of the most important late-game and New Game Plus systems in the game.
Starfield Quantum Essence Overview
If you are planning to step through the Unity anytime soon, you want as much Quantum Essence as possible before you do. This guide covers every source, every use, and the most efficient way to build up your stockpile.
Quick Summary: Quantum Essence drops from defeated Starborn enemies on the ground and, as of the Free Lanes update, also drops from destroyed Starborn ships in space. It is used to craft and upgrade the Quantum Entanglement Device, upgrade Starborn powers directly at The Lodge, and boost Starborn power regeneration in combat.
What Is Quantum Essence?
Quantum Essence is a special resource dropped exclusively by Starborn enemies in Starfield. In the base game, it functioned as a consumable that boosted the regeneration rate of your Starborn powers for 60 seconds, letting you chain abilities in quick succession during combat.
The Free Lanes update significantly expanded its role. Quantum Essence is now the core resource for the entire New Game Plus progression system, powering the Quantum Entanglement Device and giving players a way to upgrade their Starborn powers without grinding through temples or running repeated Unity cycles.
It does not appear in your standard inventory. To check your current stock and use it, open the Powers Menu.

What Is Quantum Essence Used For?
As of the Free Lanes update, Quantum Essence has four distinct uses.
1. Crafting the Quantum Entanglement Device
Building the Quantum Entanglement Device at The Lodge requires 10 Quantum Essence as a crafting component, along with an Adaptive Frame, an Isocentered Magnet, and a Tau Grade Rheostat. The device lets you carry up to 50 capacity of items through the Unity into your next New Game Plus cycle.
The 10 Quantum Essence crafting cost is the most immediate reason to start farming before your first Unity run, especially if you have not been collecting Essence throughout your playthrough.
2. Upgrading the Quantum Entanglement Device Capacity
The base capacity of the Quantum Entanglement Device is only 50, which won’t let you pass much through to your next game. However, you can also spend Quantum Essence to increase this capacity, all the way up to a maximum capacity of 200. Pushing the device toward its maximum capacity before stepping through the Unity gives you more flexibility in what you can carry over, making every New Game Plus cycle much stronger.
3. Upgrading Starborn Powers Directly
This is the biggest quality-of-life change for long-term Starfield players. You can now spend Quantum Essence at The Lodge to rank up your Starborn powers directly, without starting a new cycle and grinding through all 240-plus temples again.
This means you can stay in your current universe, farm Quantum Essence from Starborn encounters, and gradually max out the powers you use most without ever being forced into another Unity run just to unlock higher tiers. For players who have been avoiding repeated New Game Plus cycles because of the temple grind, this change alone makes Quantum Essence one of the most valuable resources in the game.
4. Boosting Starborn Power Regeneration in Combat
The original use remains too. Consuming Quantum Essence from the Powers Menu gives you 60 seconds of greatly increased Starborn power regeneration, letting you chain abilities together rapidly. As of the Free Lanes update, Quantum Essence can also be added to your Favorites for quick hotkey access mid-combat, making it practical to use during fights rather than just between them.

How to Farm Quantum Essence
There are three main ways to earn Quantum Essence, with the Free Lanes update adding the most efficient new method.
Defeating Starborn Enemies at Temples
The original and most reliable way to farm Quantum Essence is by defeating Starborn enemies. After completing each temple and collecting a Starborn power, a Starborn enemy attacks you outside the temple. Defeating them drops one Quantum Essence. Since there are 24 temples in the base game, a full temple run across a single cycle yields up to 24 Quantum Essence.
This method is consistent but slow, as it is tied to completing temples one at a time across the galaxy.
Destroying Starborn Ships in Space
Destroying Starborn ships in space is the new method for farming Essence added in the Free Lanes update and confirmed in the official patch notes. Starborn ships encountered during space travel now drop Quantum Essence when destroyed. This is a significant improvement over the old approach because Starborn ships can be actively hunted rather than encountered only as part of temple progression.
To maximize this method, build an Armillary on your ship while carrying the Artifacts. This causes Starborn ships to appear and attack you at random, giving you a consistent stream of space combat encounters to farm for Essence without having to travel between temples.
Pro Tip: This is the most efficient active farming method available. Cruise Mode makes it even better since you can now travel between planets with your ship moving automatically, and Starborn ship encounters can interrupt that travel and deliver Essence opportunities without you needing to seek them out.
Defeating Starborn Enemies During the Main Story
Starborn enemies appear throughout the main quest in addition to temple encounters, particularly during the later artifact retrieval missions. These are one-time drops rather than a repeatable farm, but they contribute to your total count during a normal playthrough. Do not skip these fights.

Best Strategy for Farming Quantum Essence
Generally speaking, it works best to make Quantum Essence farming part of your Starfield routine. Complete temples consistently across your playthrough. Each temple guarantees one Quantum Essence from the Starborn that attacks you afterward, and over the course of a full playthrough these add up without requiring any dedicated farming time.
For active farming, equip the Armillary on your ship with the Artifacts and use Cruise Mode to travel between planets. Starborn ships will attack you periodically, giving you a repeatable source of Essence drops through space combat. Your combat build and ship loadout should be strong enough to handle these encounters reliably before you commit to this method.
Before stepping through the Unity, prioritize your Quantum Essence spending in this order:
- Craft the Quantum Entanglement Device first, which requires 10 Quantum Essence
- Fill the device with your best gear before spending Essence on anything else
- Upgrade the device capacity using remaining Essence to carry as much as possible into the next cycle
- Upgrade any Starborn powers you want at a higher rank before going through
- Save any remaining Essence for the combat regeneration boost in the next cycle’s early game
Note: Quantum Essence carries over through the Unity into your next cycle. Do not feel pressure to spend everything before you go through. Any Essence you have stored will be waiting for you on the other side.
The Final Word
Quantum Essence went from a minor consumable to one of the most important resources in Starfield with the Free Lanes update. The combination of crafting the Quantum Entanglement Device, upgrading its capacity, and ranking up Starborn powers directly means you will always want more of it than you currently have.
Start farming early, use the Armillary Starborn ship method for active grinding, and complete every temple you come across. By the time you are ready to step through the Unity, a well-stocked supply of Quantum Essence makes every aspect of New Game Plus considerably less punishing.
Starfield Quantum Essence FAQ
1. Does Quantum Essence carry over into New Game Plus?
Yes. Quantum Essence carries through the Unity into your next cycle automatically. You do not need to store it in the Quantum Entanglement Device. Any Essence you have accumulated will be available to you from the start of your next playthrough, which makes it worth farming even if you are not ready to use it yet.
2. How many Quantum Essence do you need to build the Quantum Entanglement Device?
Building the Quantum Entanglement Device requires 10 Quantum Essence as part of the crafting recipe. This is in addition to one Adaptive Frame, one Isocentered Magnet, and one Tau Grade Rheostat. The Adaptive Frame, Magnet, and Rheostat can all be purchased from vendors in Jemison.
3. Can you farm Quantum Essence without completing the main story?
Not easily. Quantum Essence only drops from Starborn enemies and Starborn ships, both of which are tied to progression through the main quest. You will not encounter Starborn enemies until a specific point in the story, which means Quantum Essence farming is fundamentally a mid-to-late game activity.
4. Is there a maximum amount of Quantum Essence you can hold?
No confirmed limit has been documented. Quantum Essence does not appear in your standard inventory and has no weight, so there is no carry capacity concern. Collect as much as you can before and after each Unity run.
5. Can you upgrade all Starborn powers using Quantum Essence without ever doing New Game Plus?
Yes, in theory. The Free Lanes update lets you rank up unlocked Starborn abilities directly at The Lodge using Quantum Essence, bypassing the need to run temples on repeated cycles. However, you still need to have unlocked the power in question first. Powers you have not discovered through temples cannot be upgraded with Essence alone. The Essence upgrade path replaces the temple re-grind for powers you already have, not the initial unlock process.
6. What is the fastest way to farm Quantum Essence in 2026?
The fastest active method is building an Armillary on your ship while carrying the Artifacts, which causes Starborn ships to spawn and attack you in space. With the Free Lanes update, Starborn ships now drop Quantum Essence when destroyed, making this a repeatable and efficient farming loop. Combining this with Cruise Mode travel means you can farm Essence passively while moving between other objectives.
