Quick Summary: There are five Signs in The Witcher 3: Aard (knockback and crowd control), Igni (fire damage and armor reduction), Quen (personal shield and healing), Yrden (magical trap and ghost killer), and Axii (mind control and dialogue manipulation). Each has four upgradeable abilities covering a primary enhancement path and an alternate mode. Sign Intensity is the key stat that scales all Sign effects, and Quen should be the first Sign upgraded for most players.
The Witcher 3 Signs Explained
Signs cost Stamina to cast and share the same Stamina bar that governs dodging and rolling. Managing Stamina across a fight means balancing how many Signs you cast against how much evasion you need, and it is why passive Stamina regeneration bonuses matter more on a Sign-heavy build than on a pure melee build.
Sign Intensity is the primary scaling stat for all Sign effects. Higher Intensity means wider stagger chance on Aard, longer Burn duration from Igni, more health absorbed by Quen’s Active Shield, stronger slowing from Yrden, and longer Axii Charm duration. Sign Intensity is raised through Sign-specific Intensity skills in each tree, Sign-boosting equipment like the Griffin School armor set, decoctions, and through Flood of Anger when 3 Adrenaline Points are available.
Each Sign also has an alternate mode accessed by holding the cast button rather than tapping it. Alternate modes consume more Stamina than standard casts and in most cases change the Sign’s function entirely rather than simply improving it. Several alternate modes are among the strongest abilities in the game.
Note: Skill rank numbers in this guide reflect the Witcher 3 Remastered version, where most skills are capped at 3 ranks rather than the original 5. Effects and percentages were adjusted in the 2022 next-gen update to preserve total value within the compressed rank range.
Signs Overview
| Sign | Primary Function | Best Upgrade | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aard | Telekinetic knockback | Aard Sweep | Crowd control |
| Igni | Fire cone damage | Melt Armor or Firestream | Offense and hybrid builds |
| Yrden | Ground trap | Magic Trap | Ghost and specter encounters |
| Quen | Personal damage shield | Active Shield or Exploding Shield | All builds, especially beginners |
| Axii | Charm and stagger | Puppet | Dialogue and group fights |

Aard: The Telekinetic Sign
Aard fires a telekinetic blast in a forward cone that staggers or knocks down enemies, destroys specific destructible objects in the environment, and interrupts enemy attacks mid-swing. Its damage is lower than Igni and it has no burning or slowing component, but its crowd control value is genuinely significant. Knocked-down enemies are vulnerable to instant kills with a follow-up heavy attack, making Aard one of the fastest ways to eliminate lighter enemies when the knock-down connects.
Aard Upgrades
Far-Reaching Aard (Primary Path, Tier 1)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Increases Aard’s range by 1 yard | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Increases Aard’s range by 2 yards | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Increases Aard’s range by 3 yards | +1.5/s |
Far-Reaching Aard suits players who use Aard primarily to interrupt enemies from range or knock flying creatures like Harpies and Wyverns out of the air. Extended range means Aard can be cast before an enemy closes distance, which is most valuable against fast-approaching enemies and airborne targets.
Aard Sweep (Alternate Mode, Tier 2)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aard strikes down all opponents within a certain radius. Reduces knock-down chance by 21%. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Aard strikes down all opponents within a certain radius. Reduces knock-down chance by 17%. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Aard strikes down all opponents within a certain radius. | +1.5/s |
Aard Sweep is the more impactful upgrade. The 360-degree burst means Aard works when Geralt is surrounded, precisely the scenario where it is most needed. The knockdown penalty at ranks 1 and 2 is fully restored at rank 3, making a fully invested Aard Sweep strictly better than the standard cone for group combat. Following up a full-knockdown Aard Sweep with heavy attacks on downed enemies is one of the fastest ways to clear standard encounters.
Shockwave (Requires 1 Level of Aard Sweep, Firestream, and Magic Trap to unlock)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Increases damage dealt by Aard by 1% of current Vitality. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Increases damage dealt by Aard by 2% of current Vitality. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Increases damage dealt by Aard by 3% of current Vitality. | +1.5/s |
Best Aard Upgrade: Aard Sweep. The 360-degree radius fundamentally improves what Aard does in the situations where you most want it. Note that the knockdown penalty at ranks 1 and 2 is worth accepting to get to rank 3 where it is removed entirely.

Igni: The Fire Sign
Igni fires a cone of flames that damages all enemies in front of Geralt and has a chance to apply the Burning status effect, which deals ongoing damage per second for its duration. It is the most reliably offensive Sign in the game and the default damage dealer for Sign builds from the early game through the endgame. Burning enemies take additional damage from subsequent attacks, which makes Igni valuable even in builds that primarily use swords rather than Signs.
Igni Upgrades
Melt Armor (Primary Path, Tier 1)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Damage dealt by Igni also reduces Armor. Reduction amount increases with skill level. Increases Burn chance by 10%. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Increases Burn chance by 20%. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Increases Burn chance by 30%. | +1.5/s |
Melt Armor is one of the most impactful upgrades in the entire Sign system for any build combining Signs with sword damage. Each Igni cast reduces the target’s armor permanently for the fight, stacking with repeated casts. This benefits every sword attack, every ability, and every other Sign hitting those enemies afterward. Against heavily armored opponents like knights and Gargoyles, Melt Armor is the most efficient way to increase total damage output from all sources simultaneously.
Firestream (Alternate Mode, Tier 2)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Emits a continuous stream of fire that damages enemies. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Stamina cost is reduced by 25%. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Stamina cost is reduced by 50%. | +1.5/s |
Firestream replaces the cone burst with a sustained channeled flame Geralt can aim and sweep. It delivers more total damage against a single target and is effective against large monsters that cannot easily dodge the sustained beam. The ongoing Stamina cost makes it less viable when evasion is also needed.
Best Igni Upgrade: Melt Armor for melee hybrid builds, Firestream for pure Sign builds. Pyromaniac is worth adding to either once the primary path is established.

Yrden: The Trap Sign
Yrden is the most situationally specific of the five Signs and the one most commonly ignored by players who do not encounter its core use case. Its standard cast places a magical trap on the ground that slows enemies who pass through it. Against most normal enemies, Yrden is less impactful than Igni or Quen. Against Wraiths, Specters, and other incorporeal enemies, it is the only Sign that forces them into a physical form that can be damaged by sword attacks. Without Yrden, fighting these enemy types is significantly more frustrating than it needs to be.
Yrden Upgrades
Sustained Glyphs (Primary Path, Tier 1)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Increases sign duration by 5 seconds and area of effect by 10%. Increases the number of alternate mode charges by 2 and number of standard mode traps by 1. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Increases sign duration by 10 seconds and area of effect by 20%. Increases the number of alternate mode charges by 4 and number of standard mode traps by 2. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Increases sign duration by 15 seconds and area of effect by 30%. Increases the number of alternate mode charges by 6 and number of standard mode traps by 3. | +1.5/s |
Sustained Glyphs is the primary quality-of-life upgrade for Yrden, extending how long each trap stays active and reducing how often you need to recast it. The ability to place multiple standard Yrden traps simultaneously at higher ranks creates overlapping slow zones effective against fast-moving enemies and groups of specters.
Magic Trap (Alternate Mode, Tier 2)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Releases a magic discharge that damages and slows enemies within a 14-yard radius. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Releases a magic discharge that damages and slows enemies within a 14-yard radius. Increases damage by 25%. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Releases a magic discharge that damages and slows enemies within a 14-yard radius. Increases damage by 50%. | +1.5/s |
Magic Trap gives Yrden genuine offensive relevance beyond its anti-specter function. The zone damages everything inside it, destroys incoming projectiles, and forces Wraiths into physical form simultaneously. In fights against Wraith groups or major Specter encounters, Magic Trap combined with Supercharged Glyphs makes Yrden one of the most damaging tools in the entire Sign toolkit.
Supercharged Glyphs (Requires 1 Level of Firestream, Magic Trap, and Active Shield to unlock)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Enemies under the influence of Yrden lose 10 Vitality or Essence per second. Damage scales with enemy level and Sign intensity. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Enemies under the influence of Yrden lose 20 Vitality or Essence per second. Damage scales with enemy level and Sign intensity. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Enemies under the influence of Yrden lose 30 Vitality or Essence per second. Damage scales with enemy level and Sign intensity. | +1.5/s |
Best Yrden Upgrade: Sustained Glyphs first to make the base trap practical, then Magic Trap for the offensive zone. Supercharged Glyphs is the strongest damage addition for Sign-focused builds.

Quen: The Shield Sign
Quen is the most universally useful Sign in the game and the one every player should invest in first regardless of build. Its base cast applies a shield that absorbs one hit of damage before shattering. Against the hardest-hitting enemies in the game, that single absorbed hit can be the difference between surviving a fight and reloading. For newer players and Death March difficulty runs in particular, a well-timed Quen before a heavy attack is the most reliable damage mitigation tool available.
Quen Upgrades
Exploding Shield (Primary Path, Tier 1)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Whenever Quen shield breaks, it pushes enemies back. Push-back strength increases with skill level. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Whenever Quen shield breaks, it pushes enemies back. Push-back strength increases with skill level. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Whenever Quen shield breaks, it pushes enemies back. Push-back strength increases with skill level. | +1.5/s |
Exploding Shield is the offensive Quen upgrade. Every time the shield breaks, it converts the incoming hit into a counter that pushes enemies back, and at higher ranks deals area damage and a knockdown chance. In group fights where Quen breaks regularly, this upgrade turns every absorbed hit into crowd control. It is the better Quen upgrade for melee-focused builds where aggressive positioning means the shield will shatter often.
Active Shield (Alternate Mode, Tier 2)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Creates an active shield. Maintaining shield and blocking with it drains Stamina by 100%. Damage absorbed by the shield restores Vitality. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Creates an active shield. Maintaining shield and blocking with it drains Stamina by 50%. Damage absorbed by the shield restores Vitality. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Creates an active shield. Maintaining shield and blocking with it does not drain Stamina. Damage absorbed by the shield restores Vitality. | +1.5/s |
Active Shield changes how Quen works entirely. Rather than a one-hit shield that shatters, it maintains a continuous protective barrier. Each hit absorbed restores Vitality, turning incoming damage into self-healing. At full investment and high Sign Intensity, the Active Shield becomes a regenerative tool that makes Geralt substantially harder to kill in sustained fights.
Best Quen Upgrade: Exploding Shield for melee builds, Active Shield for Sign hybrid builds. Both are worth investing in over the course of the game.

Axii: The Charm Sign
Axii is the only Sign with a significant out-of-combat application. Investing in Delusion at rank 1 unlocks special dialogue options in conversations across the entire game, letting Geralt charm NPCs into compliance, avoid confrontations, or obtain better rewards from quest givers. These dialogue options are available through the entire campaign and frequently unlock paths that are otherwise unavailable, making Delusion arguably the highest-return single skill investment for players who engage with the game’s narrative.
In combat, Axii’s standard cast stuns the targeted enemy briefly, leaving them standing in place and unable to attack. It does not deal damage but completely neutralizes one target for the stun duration, which is invaluable in fights with multiple dangerous enemies where eliminating threat priority is the priority.
Axii Upgrades
Delusion (Primary Path, Tier 1)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Target does not move towards Geralt while Axii is being cast. Increases the effectiveness of Axii in conversations. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Target does not move towards Geralt while Axii is being cast. Increases the effectiveness of Axii in conversations. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Target does not move towards Geralt while Axii is being cast. Increases the effectiveness of Axii in conversations. | +1.5/s |
Delusion is the must-have Axii upgrade for any player who interacts with the game’s quests. The dialogue unlocks are available from rank 1 and provide value across the entire campaign at the cost of a single skill point. The combat stun improvement at higher ranks makes Axii more reliable in fights where the stun duration matters for follow-up attacks.
Puppetmaster (Alternate Mode, Tier 2)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A targeted enemy briefly becomes an ally that deals 20% more damage. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | A targeted enemy briefly becomes an ally that deals 40% more damage. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | A targeted enemy briefly becomes an ally that deals 60% more damage. | +1.5/s |
Puppet is one of the most powerful abilities in the game against groups of human enemies. Charming the most dangerous opponent removes the highest-threat target from the fight without spending offensive resources. Other enemies turn on the charmed target simultaneously, making it a two-for-one removal. At maximum rank the charm lasts long enough to dispatch several other enemies before it reverts.
Domination (Requires 1 Level of Magic Trap, Active Shield, and Puppetmaster to unlock)
| Rank | Effect | Stamina Regen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Axii can influence two targets simultaneously, but the effect is 50% weaker. | +0.5/s |
| 2 | Axii can influence two targets simultaneously, but the effect is 25% weaker. | +1.0/s |
| 3 | Axii can influence two targets simultaneously. | +1.5/s |
Best Axii Upgrade: Delusion at rank 1 is mandatory for any player. Puppet is the stronger combat upgrade once Delusion is established.
Witcher 3 Remastered: New Sign Skills
With the release of the Witcher 3 Remastered comes reworked skill trees. Some original skills remain, but with slightly altered effects, while other original skills have been removed and replaced entirely. If you are coming back to an old play through, returning players will find all of their skill points refunded and will have to put their builds back together again.
In the Signs skill tree, the first two skills for each of the five signs are basically the same. Beyond that, however, the branches combine into new skills, and you will need to unlock a level of two or three signs in order to get the next new skill. Additionally, the effect of these new skills is more complex. For example, they can boost the intensity of two damage signs, but only within the effect radius of another.
Returning players especially will want to read the tooltips for these new skills carefully as they recraft new builds!

Which Signs to Upgrade First
The priority order below applies to most builds and most difficulty levels. Specialized builds may deviate, but this sequence provides the most value early in the game when skill points are limited.
First: Quen rank 1 upgrade. Either Exploding Shield or Active Shield at rank 1 improves survivability immediately and costs one skill point. There is no build in the game that does not benefit from this.
Second: Axii Delusion rank 1. One skill point that unlocks dialogue options for the entire rest of the game. Always worth it before anything else in the Axii tree.
Third: Igni Melt Armor. The armor reduction stacks benefit sword damage and make every subsequent fight faster. Priority for hybrid and melee builds over pure Sign builds.
Fourth: Aard Sweep. Changes Aard from a situational tool to a reliable group-control option. Worth prioritizing as soon as crowd control becomes a challenge.
Fifth: Yrden Sustained Glyph. Makes Yrden practical for the encounters where it is necessary. Delay this until Wraiths and Specters become a regular part of your content.
The Final Word
Signs work best when you treat them as a toolkit rather than a primary damage source, except for dedicated Sign builds where they become exactly that. Every player benefits from Quen and Axii Delusion at rank 1. Most builds benefit from Igni Melt Armor and Aard Sweep. Yrden is essential preparation for specific encounter types rather than a general-use investment. And for players pursuing a full Sign build, Flood of Anger and high Sign Intensity turn all five into tools that outperform sword damage rather than supplement it.
The Witcher 3 Signs and Upgrades FAQ
1. Which Sign should I upgrade first in The Witcher 3?
Quen. Upgrading Exploding Shield at rank 1 costs one skill point and immediately improves your survivability in every fight. It is the most universally useful early Sign investment regardless of what build you are pursuing.
2. What does Sign Intensity do?
Sign Intensity is the scaling stat that improves the effectiveness of all Signs. Higher Intensity means better stagger chance from Aard, longer Burn duration from Igni, more health restored by Quen’s Active Shield, stronger slowing from Yrden, and longer charm duration from Axii. It is raised through Intensity skills in each Sign’s tree, Griffin School gear, and specific decoctions.
3. What is the difference between a Sign’s primary path and alternate mode?
The primary upgrade path improves the standard cast of the Sign, typically adding range, damage, or duration. The alternate mode, accessed by holding the cast button, changes how the Sign works entirely. Aard Sweep replaces the forward cone with a 360-degree burst. Quen Active Shield replaces the single-hit shield with a sustained barrier. Axii Puppet turns the stun into a charm. The two modes serve different roles and suit different playstyles.
4. Is Yrden worth investing in?
For most of the game, Yrden is a situational investment that pays off specifically against Wraiths, Specters, and other incorporeal enemies that require it to become vulnerable to sword attacks. For Sign-heavy builds, Magic Trap and Supercharged Glyphs make Yrden genuinely powerful offensively. For melee-focused builds, Sustained Glyph at rank 1 or 2 is usually sufficient.
5. What is Axii Delusion and why does every build want it?
Delusion is the rank 1 upgrade on Axii’s primary path. In addition to improving combat stun, it unlocks special dialogue options in conversations throughout the entire campaign, letting Geralt charm NPCs into compliance, bypass confrontations, or earn better quest rewards. One skill point at rank 1 provides value across the entire game.
6. Which Sign is best for a beginner?
Quen is the most beginner-friendly Sign because it directly reduces incoming damage. Axii Delusion is the best utility investment. Igni is the most straightforward offensive Sign. Start with Quen, take Axii Delusion immediately after, and then invest in Igni for damage before diversifying further.
