The Tech Skill tree in Starfield is arguably the strongest skill tree in the game, offering many useful options for expanding your playthrough. In this guide, we break down the best of the best!

1. Boost Pack Training
The Boost Pack Training skill in Starfield is required to use any Boost Pack in the game, making it an essential part of improving mobility and traversal. Take it from us: you need to get this skill unlocked as soon as possible! Not only is it fun to use, but it also opens up way more possibilities for travel and even combat when you can easily take to the skies whenever you want.
Boost Pack Training should also be maxed out all the way to Rank 4 sooner rather than later. The reason for this is that each rank of this skill makes your Boost Pack use more efficient, letting you use less fuel and regenerate fuel more quickly. Once you achieve Rank 4, you’ll notice a huge difference as on low gravity planets you can essentially fly infinitely because you have that extra potential to float and your boost pack training will generate your fuel before you even get close to the ground.

2. Piloting
Piloting is one of those extremely important skills in Starfield that everyone should invest in! Ranks 1 and 2 of this skill are a no-brainer that I’ve used on every single Starfield playthrough so far. Rank 1 lets you utilize ship thrusters to help change directions more quickly which is a must-have for ship combat while Rank 2 expands even further on this with better turning and maneuverability.
Now if you stop there at Piloting Rank 2 you’re ultimately going to be frustrated I think because to upgrade your ships to the bigger and better B class and C class you’ll also need Rank 3 and ultimately Rank 4 of Piloting as well. The most frustrating aspect of this is definitely coming across an amazing ship to steal out in the wild only to discover that you can’t even fly it because your Piloting skill is too low. So Rank 4 here is definitely recommended sooner rather than later for the most complete playthrough possible.

3. Targeting Control Systems
Targeting Control Systems is the ultimate Ship Combat skill in Starfield helping you to literally take control of the fight and turn the tide in your favor. This skill is absolutely clutch as it lets you lock onto an enemy ship in this kind of mini-game which allows you to target that ship in slow motion, for easily aimed lasers and missle strikes to truly decimate your enemies.
Using the Targeting Control Systems skill is also the only way to reliably disable an enemy ship’s engine if you want to approach them for boarding. The thing about this skill is that the time to lock onto your targets is a bit long at Rank 1 so once you do have some extra skill points I recommend taking this one to at least Rank 2 if not Rank 3 to speed that up so you do not have to wait around to get a target while fighting off those pesky space pirates.

4. Starship Design
The Starship Design skill in Starfield simply gives you more (and better) options for upgrading your ship. Each rank of Starship Design unlocks more and more advanced ship parts so taking this skill all the way up to Rank 4 will make a lot of sense if you prefer to build up your ship from scratch rather than stealing or buying one.

5. Security
The Security skill is essentially Starfield’s version of lockpicking, but a bit more advanced as it uses multiple overlapping layers of rings that you have to fill the gaps to clear the lock.
Locks in Starfield will be found on both containers and doors, meaning not only is breaking through those locks important for gaining more loot but if you don’t have the higher ranks your progress may get blocked completely if a locked door guards the way.
Ranking up this skill early will mean that any locks that you open along the way will fill up your challenge meter naturally as you play the game, letting you eventually open every possible lock type all the way up to master and never missing anything.
